Why are:

  1. Certain items of clothing = "mumsy" eg bootcuts, tunics, some boots but not others (forget which)

  1. Short wide jumpers are inherently better than others

  1. Anyone over a size 12 = fat

  1. Fat = mumsy

  1. That thinking the above makes you a cleverer and more knowing alnd all-round better person with a slight pitying disdain for those that don't agree.

Lastly I would like a definition of "Mumsy" and why it is an insult.

Thank you.

I very much have a uniform for work (which makes me want to cry) but it's easy, I look smart and if I'm tired I don't need to think about what I'm wearing

I mean, it's S and B, ifyou don't care about clothes why would you care what posters there say anyway? And if you do care, why not let people who love clothes offer their opinion? It's not a sin to love clothes.

Crunchy Frog at the jumble a mum from school saw me trying on the granny coat. After she had wiped the tears from her eyes she said 'Tufty, you can get away with it because you're funky'. There is the odd eyebrow raised at school but it's all in good humour.

I love fashion and clothing because it's visual. I second going to the V&A and looking at the couture. It's amazingly detailed and brilliantly crafted. Also gives you an insight into how visual arts (tv, cinema, art, fashion) reflect and change society. Fascinating stuff.

And 'fashion' is just dressing up. Today, I seem to have come as a cross between a yeti and a rock star. It's FUN!

I do admit, I have trouble understanding why someone would wear something ugly, like a Wolf Fleece when there are so many beautiful thing to choose from. But that thought process takes about 20 seconds before I stop giving a shiny!

"If you are wearing your bootcuts because you like them, they flatter you and you make them work for you then great, I'm behind you but if you just didn't realise that ship has passed then yes I'm a bit sneery.

I will admit that it's not very nice of me, but I am being honest here, you did ask. "

But, NotMostPeople, unless the person is walking round with a sign declaring their bootcut intent, then how would you know?! Confused Hmm

djembe - I can see you mean well, but I do love clothes and I do love chatting about them, and I've usually had lovely experiences on S&B getting advice from nice people.

But can you not see that if you start a thread, or click on a thread, and it is full of people sniggering smugly that you're fat, your clothes are 'mumsy' and they themselves would never be caught dead like that, you might actually not feel brilliant?

(Btw, crunchy and tufty, if you ever get rid of clothes ....! Grin I like the sound of what you wear. My favourite bit of clothing ATM is my velvet coat. It might be a bit granny-ish but I love it.)

I wear boot-cuts in dark, dark blue.. They make my legs look long. Skinny jeans make my boobs look disproportionatly big. I do care what I look like but I couldn't give a rats ass about fashion.

My favourite coat is a Nicole Farhi men's lumberjack coat, it's red and brown and yellow. I've been waiting 10 years for DH to alter it, I'd muck it up if I did it.
But, even though it's ginormous, I still wear it because it makes me happy.

DH might kill me. I have way too many clothes, including a coat I need to get re-woven which my mum bought in the 70s. It is sort of burnt orange, dark red, and brown colours and I love it. Many people do not!

hully - I knew there was a good reason to have kids.

Actually I still nick stuff off my little brother. Blush

LRD, when we lived in London I used to take the DC to a music thing. One of the mum's had the most gorgeous orange, soft battered leather jacket. I used to stare at it. I keep searching eBay and charity shops but to no avail.
Hully, is it a snorkel? Smile
I bought DS one on eBay for school.

I genuinely think that people who are disparaging about certain styles just have no concept of how difficult some figures and body shapes are to dress.
Nothing suits me. NOTHING. Its like hell on earth going shopping for clothes.

laptop what shape are you? I'm horribly hard to dress stylishly, hence giving up and wearing stuff that I like and amuses me!

I'm a 10-12 but carrot shaped, shoulders, huge boobs, slim hips, no arse, good legs. I look a right twat in pretty dresses (like a builder in drag)

Report
laptopdancer · 06/12/2012 12:34

Short and dumpy shaped. Apple I'd say.

I think that's the key Crunchy, wear stuff you like that amuses you. I like my 50p coat at the moment but it's not a keeper so I'll just give it in for the next jumble. I do the same with eBay and charity shops.
I buy cars and furniture this way too.
