I thought the advert was ace. Reflects my life and that of all my friends. I would love to live in a more egalitarian world but hey ho, at least I won't be starving at Christmas.

PlaySchool · 08/11/2012 22:30

And I'll be warm too. I didn't make such a bad career choice. In spite of the hard work, I'll be pleased to spend time with friends and family. No hiding away for me!

squoosh · 08/11/2012 22:35

Just promise you won't plonk your overworked bum on a pouffe!

IHeartKingThistle · 08/11/2012 22:35

The fact that it represents reality for a lot of women isn't really the point. The problem is that it presents that as normal, inevitable, even desirable. I do not want my son and daughter to grow up thinking that those are the roles they have to grow up and slot into. They aren't.

Personally, I do most of Christmas. It's because I really enjoy it. I've still complained to the ASA about this ad, because I totally resent anybody telling me that I do it because that's just what mums do. They can bugger off with that.

I think it is called "satire".

UltraBOF · 08/11/2012 22:40

I think you've summed it up perfectly, IHeartKingThistle.

squoosh · 08/11/2012 22:40

That ad definitely doesn't intend to be satirical.

PlaySchool · 08/11/2012 22:42

I thought it was. Surely, it cannot be serious? No!

nongenderbias9 · 08/11/2012 22:42

Well yes, the parents aren't communicating effectively and Dad is taking Mum for granted. I wonder why ASDA think this is going to make their store popular. Stereotyping of this nature is a retrogressive step for the family. Why can't they show two parents being civil and respectful towards each other and planning a happy Christmas that suits all parties. I'm surprised the advertising complaints commission let them get away with this portrayal of exploitation thinly veiled with Christmas hype.

PlaySchool · 08/11/2012 22:46

Golly, are Asda really that devious? Goodness, they are trying to make a gender stereotype more socially acceptable so they take advantage of a Christian festival to do it. This stuff will permeate into the subconscious of the entire nation. I hope it is only on after the watershed.

Softlysoftly · 08/11/2012 22:50

Xenia i find it so very sad that someone with a supposedly excellent education can be quite so uneducated about the world around her. It goes to show that intelligence can be so narrow as to very closely resemble stupidity.

IHeartKingThistle · 08/11/2012 22:54

Thanks BOF - it's not often I manage that Grin

LineRunner · 08/11/2012 22:56

No Asda aren't that devious. But Saatchi and Saatchi are patronising, twattish and a waste of money, and Asda signed it off.

nongenderbias9 · 08/11/2012 23:00

I think I am going to have to lie down. So many people here with conflicting ideas. Could there be a definitive answer? To laugh or to cry such is the dilemma.

happybubblebrain · 08/11/2012 23:05

Reading the last few posts it looks like I've missed a good Xenia scrap, I'm gonna have to read the whole thread now, damn.

UltraBOF · 08/11/2012 23:09

Just repeat the usual phrases to yourself, happy. Saves time.

moonblushtomato · 08/11/2012 23:13

I've just seen it and thought it was refreshingly down to earth, not over the top glamorous/perfect christmas.

Chez nous DH does all the cooking, I do everything else. I wouldn't have it any other way Smile

happybubblebrain · 08/11/2012 23:14

Buy your own island, drink only water, work from 5am to 11pm, earn a million pounds a day, don't weigh more than 8 stone, every woman should be doing it, blah blah blah.

Darkesteyes · 08/11/2012 23:27

Xenia is a femysogynist!

arf at happybubblebrain.

UltraBOF · 08/11/2012 23:27

Yup, you've pretty much got it. I think they have an update for it now though, Xenia 2.1. It's got an extension pack with assorted offensive opinions about regional accents.
