I have poured 2 litres of coca cola over a gammon joint and put it in a low-heat oven.

It looks, frankly, vile.

Mumsnet has promised me that in 5 hours time, it will transform into a feast of loveliness.

AIBU to have doubts?

YANBU to have doubts about any recipe you haven't tried before.
Key question. Do you have a teenager? It's always easier to cope with a cooking failure if you have a bottomless pit ready and willing to engulf it.

Shinyshoes1 · 30/10/2012 12:06

leave it....it will be scrummilicious !!!

WorraLiberty · 30/10/2012 12:09

You'll rot its teeth!

megandraper · 30/10/2012 12:10

Well, if you are ABSOLUTELY sure. I need dinner to be ready to pull out of the oven at 5.30, and don't have time to faff about with alternatives...

No teenager, Woffling, though DH will eat pretty much anything and often has to DCs are 5, 3 and 1 so quite prone to taking against funny-looking stuff. 5yo and 1yo love ham though, so am hopeful.

It will be fabulous..!

WandaDoff · 30/10/2012 12:14

It will be DELICIOUS. Yum.

CookieRookie · 30/10/2012 12:19

So glad I saw this thread. I was going to do boiled gammon for dinner. Definately trying this instead if it can be done with a boneless joint?

What C temp in a fan oven?

I love trying new things but will not be trying beef cheek ever again after last weeks yucky, slimey mess!

ISeeDeadFairies · 30/10/2012 12:22

Oh yes what is recipe sounds gorgeous!

TakingTheStairs · 30/10/2012 12:22

I make this recipe... it's so so good. bedhopper you'll love it.
cookieRookie I don't knwo what the MN recipe is, but this is the Nigella Lawson one I use which will have the temps etc that you need

freddiefrog · 30/10/2012 12:24

It'll be fine!

I was unconvinced the first time I made it, but honestly, it was lovely!

LetUsPrey · 30/10/2012 12:26

I've made this and it was delicious. I am crap at cooking so if even I can make it and it tastes good, then you should be okay. [hsmile]

CookieRookie · 30/10/2012 12:28

Thanks Taking

Happy cooking bedhopper

TodaysAGhoulDay · 30/10/2012 12:30

You'll never cook gammon any other way from now on! And if it's a large joint, you'll probably find yourself picking at it afterwards until it's all gone like me

megandraper · 30/10/2012 13:08

I am quite excited now. That Nigella recipe looks lovely though a bit more complicated than what I'm doing.

DeadFairies - I'm cooking it in the simmering oven of an Aga, but I think that's about 70 degrees centigrade (I brought it to a simmer on the hob before putting it in the oven).

Will report back later this evening on how it went...

OP posts:
5Foot5 · 30/10/2012 13:09

I have done the Nigella recipe for this and it was delicious

ISeeDeadFairies · 30/10/2012 13:14

Stupid question but what would you serve it with?

TakingTheStairs · 30/10/2012 13:46

mash & carrots for me!
Any type of potatoes & veg would be good.

PumpkInDublic · 30/10/2012 13:51

I tried this last month, not the fancy nigella one either, just gammon with coke served with roast veg. It will be amazing, DP and DS(8) wolfed it down.

ExitPursuedByAaaaaarGhoul · 30/10/2012 13:52

Serve it with ice and a slice surely?

missmalteser · 30/10/2012 13:53

So, anytime I try the nigella recipe my gammon always sort of breaks up and comes apart, even on the lowest simmer, is the oven the way to go then? Do you add anything else?

carabos · 30/10/2012 13:55

Is it full-fat Coke?

ArtyFartyQueen · 30/10/2012 13:55

I serve it with cheesy jacket potatoes and beans or sweet potato mash - yum!

StuntGirl · 30/10/2012 13:58

I've never eaten it (veggie) but my boyfriend and brother love it.

TakingTheStairs · 30/10/2012 14:03

Yes to full fat coke carabos diet coke doesn't work properly for some reason.
