I have poured 2 litres of coca cola over a gammon joint and put it in a low-heat oven.

It looks, frankly, vile.

Mumsnet has promised me that in 5 hours time, it will transform into a feast of loveliness.

AIBU to have doubts?

OP - so glad to hear you're alive Wink, temporarily knocked out by delicious ham Grin

megandraper · 01/11/2012 09:17

Grin gunz

parno, would love the recipe for making soup from the cider/ham liquid!

I'm going to have to try this, it sounds delicious.

Phacelia · 01/11/2012 10:08

Think you've all convinced me to try this recipe. I've always been a bit tempted and a bit revulsed simultaneously, but clearly it's nicer than I imagined.

Gunznroses · 01/11/2012 15:01

Can this be tried with turkey ? Hmm

TakingTheStairs · 07/11/2012 12:28

I doubt it Gunznroses, it only works with the ham because you would normally cook ham in liquid anyway

mousebacon · 07/11/2012 13:55

Going to have to try this now Grin

Do I need to soak the gammon in water overnight first?

TakingTheStairs · 07/11/2012 14:16

No mousebacon, not unless you have an unusually salty piece (though how you are meant to know that I don't know!)

mousebacon · 07/11/2012 16:19

Thanks TakingTheStairs

Smile
megandraper · 08/11/2012 11:26

I didn't soak my gammon. It did taste a bit salty but in a good way.

I am SO trying this. I am glad to read it doesn't actually taste of coca cola as DH doesn't drink it.

megandraper · 09/11/2012 10:40

fuzz - my DH can't stand coca cola either, but he loved the gammon.

I find it's best not to tell people what something is cooked in/with. Didn't tell dp his onion gravy had jam in it until after he'd said how lovely it was

JemimaPuddle · 12/11/2012 15:55

So what did I do wrong?

Gammon in slow cooker, bottle of coke over the top. Tasted a bit meh! Tbh. Did I miss something out?

ladygoldenlion · 12/11/2012 16:08

I did mine in a casserole dish yesterday, in at 12pm with 2 cans of coke over it and 2 onions quartered. Took it out at 4pm to cut it in half as was a bit worried it wasn't cooked through.

Served it at 5pm - whole family thought it was scrummy!

FellatioNelson · 12/11/2012 16:09

I made this a couple of weeks ago. It was bloody lovely. Although personally I would have brought it to the boil on the hob first.

FellatioNelson · 12/11/2012 16:11

Oh, I see you've had it and it was meh.

Well I think sticking it in the oven on low was the problem. I boiled mine rapidly for about 20 mins, then turned it down and braised it slowly for about three hours. I could have transferred it to the oven, I'm sure it would have been just as good, but you really needed to boil it first. Did you add a bit of onion and stuff?

FellatioNelson · 12/11/2012 16:12

Slow cooker might have been the problem. Mine took three hours on the hob. The slow cooker would probably have needed 24 hours Grin

JemimaPuddle · 12/11/2012 16:16

No onions or anything just in slow cooker from about 12ish until 5.

Think I'll try again on a couple of onions but do it on the hob.

I have done a similar thing in the slow cooker with a beef roast and root beer. Delish!

YouWithTheFace · 12/11/2012 16:54

I see your Coke and raise you 2 l Coke and three lagers. Which is our standard gammon-simmer-stock.

I hate Coke, lager, and Coke and lager, and love this gammon.

ScatterChasse · 12/11/2012 17:01

The gammon and sugar is lovely zukie (though I use soft dark brown rather than demerara). Definitely try it!

I just kept turning mine, to make sure it was all coated.
