I have poured 2 litres of coca cola over a gammon joint and put it in a low-heat oven.

It looks, frankly, vile.

Mumsnet has promised me that in 5 hours time, it will transform into a feast of loveliness.

AIBU to have doubts?

I want to try it but passed out at the thought of giving my daft kids coke Grin.

TotallyEggFlipped · 30/10/2012 14:16

Carabos - yes. Do not use diet cola.

Zukiecat The Nigella recipe has all the information about timings and temperatures.
You do not need to do the glaze if you don't want, it's tasty on it's it's own.

You need to put the ham in a put with a lid.
I don't know about using your slow cooker, sorry.

BigBroomstickBIWI · 30/10/2012 14:49

I cooked that once and HATED it, as did DH. She talks about keeping the liquor to make soup with. Frankly, I wouldn't have put it in my car, although it looked and smelled as if it was some kind of petrol.

But I am in the minority. Everyone else raves about it! Grin

MamaMary · 30/10/2012 14:53

It sounds horrible to me. I like coke as a drink, but the thought of it with ham does not appeal.

WilsonFrickett · 30/10/2012 14:55

cheap ham and coke? Is this a MIL thread? [hgrin]

It's bloody lovely... it also works with tango.

If you prefer something more natural, then fresh orange juice or organic lemonade is great too.

If you have time, glaze it in the over on high with some honey and orange zest until it caramelises.

I can only be arsed at Christmas... so in about 4 week's time we shall mostly be eating ham until I get this year's combo right. I have some preserved damsons and some ginger and pear syrupy (was supposed to be jam - fail) stuff to try out.

aldiwhore · 30/10/2012 17:21

zukie I'm no expert but in my experience is that if it takes a while to cook hobside or in t'oven, then it works in a slow cooker (because it's just cooking done slowly!)

For glaze you need a high heat for a short time, my oven isn't great at that.

Sidge · 30/10/2012 17:22

It's yummy!

I do it for Christmas in a large pot on the hob, slow simmer for a few hours in full fat Coke. The Coke goes all weird looking but you pour that away and are left with the softest, tastiest ham.

mignonette · 30/10/2012 17:22

Cherry Coke is even better........

HazeltheMcWitch · 30/10/2012 17:26

Ginger ale is my christmassy twist...

I don't eat it myself either: I'm also veggie. Is there anything veggie that I can slowly cook in pop?

HazeltheMcWitch · 30/10/2012 17:26

I say my twist, it's Nigella's really.

becstargazeypie · 30/10/2012 17:27

I didn't like it at all. Reverted to my usual recipe - simmer in cider, then glaze with runny honey, mustard and cloves and finish off in the oven. Mmmm, can't wait. (That's our usual Christmas eve dinner!)

Convert · 30/10/2012 17:28

I've been waiting all day to see how its turned out! So OP??

Convert · 30/10/2012 17:30

Oh, now I fancy the cider one!

PrincessPumpkinshoutsBOO · 30/10/2012 17:32

Shamelessly marking place before shopping for ham and cola [hsmile]

PickledFanjoCat · 30/10/2012 17:36

Have faith tis lush. I finished mine in oven last year studded with cloves & black treacle.

Can't remember if it was nigellas or not.

Cider sounds good.. Mmmm

NotQuintAtAllOhNo · 30/10/2012 17:39

Must it be treacle? Can it just be syrup?

numbum · 30/10/2012 18:05

I chuck mine in the slow cooker, pour full fat PROPER coke (cheap versions arent as nice!) and leave it to cook all day. Tis yummy but doesnt go with a roast dinner IMO. Chips, peas and fried egg here.

PickledFanjoCat · 30/10/2012 18:07

I think treacle should be ok, the stuff I used was like tar!

Gooeyhead · 30/10/2012 19:28

Hold it hold it hold it...... I've just had to read the op several times.... Coke and Gammon... Coke and Gammon??????? I'm usually down with the kids when it comes to cooking and recipes but this is a new one on me!!! I'm going to now have to give this a go... Tomorrow!!! I'm far too nosey to leave it any longer and I don't like being left out stamps foot Grin

FadingAwayToAHippo · 30/10/2012 19:46

I was also going to ask about slow cooker, so just the ham and coke? Nothing else?? My sisters mil brought some to Christmas lunch last year, was brilliant. Mums turkey was a bit of a let down after it, but even she admitted preferring the ham
:)
