So I started Zumba last week with SIL and really enjoyed it. This week SIL was hung over so couldn't make the class, but my MIL came with me instead??? She insisted. Anyway my MIL is a M&S/John Lewis loving 64 yo lady.
She turns up and it was quite literally the funniest thing I've ever seen. Arms and legs everywhere. Deffinately worked harder laughing than zumbaing!! I feel quite tight because I think she thought she was doing me a favour coming....and then she was a little embarrassed by all the ass shaking, thrusting and gyrating.Blush I mentioned it to DH when I got back and he said I had been cruel to laugh....but I couldn't stop myself. And I'm still laughing now inside....!! Grin
Would you laugh if your MIL was Zumba-ing a few feet away from you??

This is exactly why I find it so hard to get over my embarrassment and go and try out something that could be really, really good for me. People like you.

If you couldn't control your laughter, maybe next time try being impressed she didn't just walk out despite your mocking. Or do what we advise small children to do, look elsewhere, stand elsewhere, pinch your nose. Maybe you could then work on a more grown-up attitude.

Your dh is right. I would be furious with you in his shoes. In fact, I am furious.

saltnpepashere · 29/08/2012 09:43

I do zumba and it is quite funny when there are ladies of a certain age shaking their thing - I do always feel really mean when I laugh though.

There is a woman who goes to mine who must be late 50s and is quite rotund. She has actually bought all the zumba branded combat trousers, vest etc. and is always going on about how she knows all the routines as well. She is total crap at the dancing and when we do all the gyrating and body popping (I think the instructor thinks she is a dancer in a hip hop video Hmm) it is all I can do to stop myself pissing myself. And occasionally she will also let out a 'woop woop' as well.

But then I just think to myself that she is enjoying herself and getting a bit of excercise, so just let her be!

dinkystinky · 29/08/2012 09:44

Good on her for giving it a go. I'm rubbish at zumba too but enjoy just being a tit while getting some exercise - give it a go yourself and you'll probably enjoy the class more.

AKissIsNotAContract · 29/08/2012 09:45

This is why I wouldn't do Zumba, I'd be the one that everyone was laughing at.

Gentleness · 29/08/2012 09:45

I meant ' walk out because of your mocking'.

dinkystinky · 29/08/2012 09:46

Honestly Gentleness and AKiss - I'm that person that everyone laughs at - and I care not a jot!

lurkedtoolong · 29/08/2012 09:47

I'd be the overweight, unco-ordinated blob at Zumba. And if my MIL was there it would make two of us.

Did you laugh with her or at her? There's a big difference. If it was the latter (as it would be with me and my MIL - like the time she burst one of those unburstable exercise balls) that's fine. If you're laughing at her because she is a bit out of step then you're being mean and your DH is right to be pissed off with you.

ginslinger · 29/08/2012 09:48

FFS you're mean.

EnjoyResponsibly · 29/08/2012 09:49

If she was laughing too you're not being mean.

The reason I'll never do Zumba is because people will laugh at me.

AKissIsNotAContract · 29/08/2012 09:51

That's great dinky, I wish I had your confidence. Sadly, with things like that I just don't - too many memories of being laughed at during PE at school.

FelicitywasSarca · 29/08/2012 09:51

You are mean.

tallwivglasses · 29/08/2012 09:58

I was thinking of going but you've put me off. Thank you. What did you expect from this thread? A load of people coming on with amusing fat mil anecdotes? Beware op, it could be you on the receiving end one day Grin

puds11 · 29/08/2012 10:01

You sound nice Hmm
I really hat people who mock people when they are trying. Its cruel, bullying behavior.

puds11 · 29/08/2012 10:01

hate not hat

forcedinsomnia · 29/08/2012 10:01

She was deffinately laughing too....she was so shocked at the moves. Think being furious with me is a little harsh Gentleness. Think you and my DH should chill out. It was the fact that it was my MIL and she was shaking her ass and gyrating like Beyonce next to me. Trust me I am rubbish at it...and I'm sure many could/would laugh at me. But I don't care. Live a little! She said she would come again so I don't think I've scarred her for life...! Grin

OTheMarriedManatee · 29/08/2012 10:05

My MIL is fairly plump with very little body confidence. I'd give her all the encouragement in the world if she plucked up the courage to try something new like Zumba.

Your DH is right: it's cruel to laugh and does not reflect well on you.

pumpkinsweetie · 29/08/2012 10:07

Good on her for giving it a go, your mil sounds like good fun to with.
Stop laughing, you will be old one dayGrin

Gentleness · 29/08/2012 10:08

I know dinky, I would LOVE to go and need the exercise, but really not the mockery of women like op. It's a vicious circle - you need to go (and lose weight) to get confident but going just confirms that you are laughable.

Poor, poor mil. Doesn't sound to me like it was shared laughter - op knew she was embarrassed and couldn't find the maturity to support her.

TheBigJessie · 29/08/2012 10:10

I don't think this thread is very nice. You may claim you were laughing with her at the class, but what's this thread, then? It's a "laugh at my MIL behind her back" thread.

ConferencePear · 29/08/2012 10:12

ForcedInsomnia I'd like to be around having a snigger when you reach a 'certain age'.

Floggingmolly · 29/08/2012 10:13

Aww, she sounds a game old bird. Fair play to her!

Lets take the piss out of older ladies.... nice Hmm

Birdsgottafly · 29/08/2012 10:16

I'l be off then to get a chasity belt fitted, seeming as my gyrating days are over Hmm.

I'm sure that this thread will be linked to when a 'i judge fat people', one is started.

It's tough to keep your weight down when you are fighting against, menopause+aging+health conditions.

I much prefer the 'latin' attitude that all women are sexual, whatever their age.

UserNameNotAvailable · 29/08/2012 10:16

I think if she was laughing too then yanbu. I would have though you were not laughing at her but at seeing her do things like shaking her butt and gyrating if its not something she would normally do. I am imagining your mil being more of a twin set and pearls kinda lady.

Glad you both enjoyed it and I would love to give it a go but have no-one to go with so I can laugh at myself being so un-cordinated and useless.
