It isn't always available pumpkin. Miscarriages of justice can and do happen.

waterlego6064 · 02/07/2012 22:41

Would you do that job pumpkin?

RubyFakeNails · 02/07/2012 22:41

pumpkin can't you see your own hypocrisy, even in just that sentence?

ninjasquirrel · 02/07/2012 22:41

Anyone want to join me in a discussion of evidence-based policy? No? We're off on 'castrate the paedo's', now, aren't we...? Never mind.

waterlego6064 · 02/07/2012 22:42

The castration, I mean.

pumpkinsweetie · 02/07/2012 22:42

Im not a hypocrite at all i just cant see why any 'human' would hurt a child

Krumbum · 02/07/2012 22:44

There is chemical castration which is reversible.
I think for some people it could be necessary if they are that much of a threat. But I'd need to know more about it.

MrsTerryPratchett · 02/07/2012 22:45

Did you read my post about the First Nations pumpkin?

ninjasquirrel · 02/07/2012 22:46

Squeaky "make it tougher on them from the beginning and they will be less inclined to want a return ticket"
But that's exactly what the evidence doesn't show.

pumpkinsweetie · 02/07/2012 22:46

Yes i would do that job obviously with gloves on complete with a chainsawGrin

RubyFakeNails · 02/07/2012 22:46

I'm actually interested in what you were saying ninja don't know if you saw the link I posted?

It's fundamentally hypocritical and morally wrong. If we say killing is wrong yu can't then go an kill people and that trickles down through all crime.

waterlego6064 · 02/07/2012 22:46

Well unfortunately they do pumpkin and we have to find the best way to deal with them. Do you believe that castrating paedophiles would halt all abuse on children? I believe you're wrong and I wouldn't really be prepared to test the theory. it would go against my human nature. Would you be prepared to do it?

squeakytoy · 02/07/2012 22:46

Who are First Nations?

LightbulbSoup · 02/07/2012 22:47

Ok, I work in a prison and believe me this particular place is not fit to live in. A lot of the prisoners don't have access to a toilet in their cell never mind an X box.

I don't feel sorry for any of them but the most important things to a prisoner are their meals and the visits from family/friends. If they get that and a few other privileges then they're calm and if they're calm then they're not rioting and assaulting staff.

Of course some would rather be in prison because they have such a chaotic and shit life outside it's actually preferable to them. Some don't care and they will breeze through their time and say it's like a holiday camp. How much of that is bravado?

ninjasquirrel · 02/07/2012 22:47

Shit WhiteWidow, just read your post, that's awful.

waterlego6064 · 02/07/2012 22:47

Then you clearly have some violent and inhumane impulses yourself pumpkin, don't you?

sensuallettuce · 02/07/2012 22:48

They have probably already hard worse things happen to the in childhood squeakytoy which is why they have ended up there at such a young age.

sensuallettuce · 02/07/2012 22:48

Had

pumpkinsweetie · 02/07/2012 22:48

MrsTerry, a peadophile is a peadophile even if they happen to be a priest it doesn't mean it forgives what they have done and a peadophile is also a peadophile even when they have been molested themselves as you would think they wouldn't want to inflict it on anyone else after going through it themselves

squeakytoy · 02/07/2012 22:49

"Squeaky "make it tougher on them from the beginning and they will be less inclined to want a return ticket"
But that's exactly what the evidence doesn't show"

That depends on which country you are looking at the statistics for. I am basing my views and opinions on the UK, because that is the country I live in, and the country where the laws have a direct affect on me, and on my family and friends. And also because I thought this thread was about UK prisons too.

Statistics for the UK show that the reoffending rate is rapidly increasing, and they also show that sentencing is much lighter than it was in previous decades.

waterlego6064 · 02/07/2012 22:50

You would think so wouldn't you pumpkin but sadly, many people who abuse children were themselves abused as children.

griphook · 02/07/2012 22:50

Completely agree with squeaky.

For every prisoner there is a victim and a family who have had all choice taken from them. Often with long lasting effects.

Prison should be a mixture of punishment and rehabilitation, it should be about reflecting on the crime committed and recognising the pain felt by the victim.

The documentary the other night showing the man who kicked his friends head in for an hour and a half before he stopped indicated that he was allowed to make choices, he choose to shave his hair and he had a duvet cover with a football team on ( I think). Asked if he regretted murdering his friend he answered something along the lines of some good had come out of it as he now had qualifications. Real silver lining for the victims family.

I'm sure the victims family would love to be able choose what to make him for dinner

pumpkinsweetie · 02/07/2012 22:51

I do have pretty inhumane views but i happen to care about children as they are innocent and pure-for someone to hurt a baby/child makes them a monster and i have absolutely zilch sympathy for someone that has made children suffer in such a way

squeakytoy · 02/07/2012 22:52

"They have probably already hard worse things happen to the in childhood squeakytoy which is why they have ended up there at such a young age."

That is not the point though. Having a tough childhood does not make it ok for them to go out and rob, fight, and generally make other peoples lives a misery.

Many of them have come from families where there are already convicted criminals, older brothers, fathers... they are following in the family footsteps.

Not every prisoner will reoffend, but far too many will.

sensuallettuce · 02/07/2012 22:52

A very small amount of people who are abused in childhood go on to abuse BUT 70% of convicted peadophiles have themselves been abused at some point during childhood or adolescence.
