100% agree with squeaky and pumpkin.

waterlego6064 · 02/07/2012 22:10

People who want to squeaky. If he wants to, that's great. If he doesn't, he doesn't have to, that's all I'm saying.

ninjasquirrel · 02/07/2012 22:10

Personally I want a criminal justice system that locks fewer people up, cos it's bloody expensive, and does whatever in the way of rehabilitation that proper research shows is effective in reducing reoffending. And I'll save my food-related outrage for malnourished old people in hospitals who aren't given the care and attention they need to get a proper meal down them.

MrsTerryPratchett · 02/07/2012 22:11

Much as I respect people who believe they are fighting for their country and hope they receive support when they return, most of the wars and conflicts of the last 50 years are not ones I would have supported. So, can we agree to disagree on the fighting for our freedom stuff?

Agree that you can be angry and want offenders to suffer but that doesn't reduce crime.

squeakytoy · 02/07/2012 22:11

eh Waterlego?

waterlego6064 · 02/07/2012 22:12

Sorry, that was to sensuallettuce not you squeaky.

sensuallettuce · 02/07/2012 22:13

Fine - if all the armed forces downed tools and walked out where the fuck would you be Pratcheyt?! They don't choose the conflicts or the politics behind it - they just do the job.

Angry.

waterlego6064 · 02/07/2012 22:14

MrsTerry has said what I was thinking re conflict. But this thread isn't about the armed forces.

sensuallettuce · 02/07/2012 22:14

We have to have an armed force the way the world is at the moment.

Someone has to do it - luckily for you people likemy OH are prepared to do it.

sensuallettuce · 02/07/2012 22:15

No it's not waterlego but I refuse to read this guff and not defend them.

pumpkinsweetie · 02/07/2012 22:16

Is there really a NEED to give prisoners a choice of meal?
Surely it is a waste of goverment funds which would be better spent on elderly/armed forces/childrens homes food which should better than it is?

gordyslovesheep · 02/07/2012 22:16

how did not wanting people in prison to be fed gruel and beaten twice daily turn into 'people who feel like that hate our boys' - seriously?

I would rather BOTH groups had decent conditions because I recognise both as human beings

I don't think prisoners are all fantastic people and I don;t think troops deserve to live in holes

hope that clears it up Grin

Dawndonna · 02/07/2012 22:16

Anyone who thinks prison is an easy option still has a great deal of growing up to do.

gordyslovesheep · 02/07/2012 22:18

what about people who where in children's homes and are now in military prison - do they get 3 choices on account of meeting one or more of the 'good guy' criteria?

waterlego6064 · 02/07/2012 22:18

I can understand your need to defend what your OH does sl. I would much rather people like your OH didn't have to be there at all and I'm sure you feel that way too.

MrsTerryPratchett · 02/07/2012 22:19

And a lot of my family and friends. Doesn't mean I support the wars. Don't assume I disagree with the people. Just what they are asked to do.

Places where prison is shit... South Africa (massive incidence of rape) USA (highest per capital inside in the world) Thailand (enormous drug and child prostitution issues). Do you get where I'm going?

sensuallettuce · 02/07/2012 22:20

As I said they don't chose the politics or which conflicts - they do an essential job, thankfully.

hipposaurus · 02/07/2012 22:20

Why not put them in a secure compound with some seeds and garden tools and make them grow their own and build their own community. The most dangerous criminals, I.e. murderers, can be in a secure compound within the compound.

I'm sure they'll get on well together and will save a lot of tax. Should be a good deterrent too, as I understand the most abhorrent criminals, such as paedophiles, are normally at risk of murder by other criminals in prison, so this will sort them out too, no more pandering to the abusers by putting them in separate wings.

MAYBELATERNOWIMBUSY · 02/07/2012 22:20

lots of posts slightly off topic, to clarify, when a person is sent to prison, the legal punishment is denial of freedom, that is it , so they get a choice of grub , ok , for a choice of grub , would you really swap places with them, really ? if you answered yes to that question , you seriously need more than a more varied menu .

Threelittleducks · 02/07/2012 22:22

I bet It's nicer than hospital food. As a vegetarian on the end of the maternity ward after all the food had been given out and despite me ticking the vege option I wad only ever offered a ham sandwich or chicken salad. I was only there for 5 days and was pretty ill until I got home and could eat properly!
I hope they do get decent food. It does a lot more than nourish the body...

sensuallettuce · 02/07/2012 22:22

Hospital food is bloody disgusting :)

pumpkinsweetie · 02/07/2012 22:23

Great idea HippoGrin
I do not have any sympathy for prisoners and i think they should only get the 'basics' to live off and that is it.
Peadophiles, murderers and rapists are another matter, i would want them sentenced to death as they are not 'human' in my eyes

waterlego6064 · 02/07/2012 22:23

And it would be good if the conditions for them were better sl. But that doesn't mean conditions for prisoners should be terrible.

ninjasquirrel · 02/07/2012 22:23

Squeaky asked for links to facts, so... quick Google, first link is this research study faculty.som.yale.edu/keithchen/papers/Final_ALER07.pdf "If anything, our estimates suggest that harsher prison conditions lead to more post-release crime."

sensuallettuce · 02/07/2012 22:24

And I have never said they should be - I have said I don't think it's right that they are the same Hmm
