The context of the conversation is that we are celebrating the jubilee as an act of Britishness or patriotism. That the royal family are symbolic of an essential ' Britishness'

Now if we had an electable royal family, and Mr and Mrs Patel were allowed to spend a few years living in luxury and defining us a nation, then brilliant!

But the fact is that the aristocracy upholds values of Vritishness which are only useful in continuing to reinforce the idea that Toffs are somehow entitled to wealth and privilege. They sppeal yo this idea the britishness is about criwns snd castles, hunting and shooting. The jubilee is one of those occasions.

What the aristocracy is, is generation upon generation of rich Europeans married off to reinforce political alliances and maintain power. Yes they have German background, yes Prince Philip is Greek do the idea that they represent any ancestral ' Englishness' or ' Britishness' is ridiculous. The whole notion of some defined national identity which has anything to do with the royals is ridiculous.

I'm not ashamed to be British. There are many, many things to be proud of. We are not perfect but we have a pretty good stab at upholding the rights of the individual to freedom of speech, fair trial, we maintain law and order ( most of the time) we have free education, access to good healthcare, we have equality legislation and my daughters I hope will have the same opportunities as the boy sitting next to them at their state school. We have civil partnerships, a proud tradition of multiculturalism and bloody good pop music/ art heritage.
None of these things which make me proud to be British are anything to do with the sodding royal family.

I can't even work up the energy to be cross about the gigantic waste of time and money that is the Jubilee. It all feels like it's been going on for about a million years and it hasn't even happened yet. I'm so bored with it all.
