Hullygully

I am with you.

And it's not just because I have been told I will be doing 4 night shifts over the bank holiday instead of the usual two.

I think the forelock tugging and obsequious deference to a bunch of people who frankly wouldn't piss on you if you were on fire, is actually an embarrassment.

And yes the idea of them defining " Britishness" and that being an argument for not becoming a republic is ludicrous.

The French had the right idea.

In fact, so many of Philip's relatives had Nazi links that when he married Princess Elizabeth he was severely limited on the guests he could invite.

yum yum

I shall be wearing my truly ancient badge from the Silver Jubilee back in 1977. It's got a simple message on it - "Stuff The Jubilee, Stop the Cuts".

How depressingly ironic that this message is still current.

Report
vezzie · 31/05/2012 11:11

Of course they are vile, but:

Jubilee = 4 day weekend
Olympics = paying through the nose for weeks of insulting wasted time and practical inconvenience
Real Enemy = neoliberal capitalism (that is why we are all poor at the moment, and the real empire to worry about is the US one)

If, in some bizarre barely imaginable parallel universe, I were invited to a do at the palace, I would just shrug and politely decline. If I were invited to a do at No. 10, in the same crazy world, I would go, and give the git a piece of my mind, and leave some very annoying slow-burning practical joke in the loos (details tbc)

I have absolutely no interest in the anniversaries of anyone other than people i know and love.

I could not possibly love the Queen as i don't know her and am never likely to know her.

But they are English/British and it is racist to say otherwise.

The house of Windsor springs from the marriage of Queen Victoria to Prince Albert in 1840. He was the son of the Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha in Germany and his name became that used by the British royal family.

So that's great you agree with the rest of us..They are British as that was three generations ago!!

Didn't Harry dress up in a Nazi uniform for a Bad Taste Party?

It's not like he wore it on ceremonials.

But Hully SO WHAT?

Do we judge people on what their families have done? So Prince Philips relatives may have been Nazi sympathisers but he wasn't!! We aren't having a party for Prince Christophe of Hesse. All the more reason to respect him if he has taken a different view to the rest of his family.

And again your point about Edward VIII - he abdicated and was shunned for the rest of his life.

I can only repeat that I'm surprised that Mumsnet allows the overt racism in this thread. Philip was in active service during the war on the Allies side.
Many of the posts here are insulting to anyone who has mixed ancestry.

I think I love you Hully and woohoo tethers!
As always, the multi-nationals have jumped on the bandwagon and are using it to sell us more shit we don't need, that will end up in land-fill.
I am trying hard not to be uncomfortable with the Union Flag, since we should reclaim it from the far right, but it's difficult not to shudder when I see it.
The Queen is there purely as an accident of birth. She has only reigned this long due to private health care and never having to do anything for herself. It is bizarre that we are all looking up to her as some deity despite the fact that she is only the largest landowner in the country because hundreds of years ago her ancestors killed and enslaved our ancestors.
Vive le revolution!
(or somethink that that)

HullyGully I'm with you on this. Even leaving the Nazi links aside, I wouldn't want to have the royal family even if they had been staunch anti-fascists throughout the last century. I think that as a democratic society we should have moved on a bit from unelected heads of state.
I'd also rather see my taxes spent on keeping a few libraries or women's refuges open rather than a flotilla down the Thames.

Don't give a fuck about the Queen. Don't want rid of her cos I think it'd cost more.

This is just the start of the massive Englandgasm that will be the summer ahead, between the jubilee, olympics and euro 2012 or whatever it is. I'm well over it.

Hully, you're not actually addressing the racist slurs? Is that because you have no defence? If getting rid of the royal family because one of them married a German nearly 200 years ago, you'll probably have issues with a huge proportion of residents/citizens currently living in the UK. So, do you?

Hullygully · 31/05/2012 11:19

I can't be bothered with the racist stuff.

It isn't racist to say someone is German, though I personally think their heritage is actually irrelevant to the fact that they're outdated parasites and should all bugger off.

X-post.

Do you actually believe what you just wrote? That Prince William cheats, stabs, strangles and so-forth?

As far as I can make out, they're an institutional relic doing not much harm, certainly have no powers over how the country is run (lets leave that to the likes of Tony Blair to fuck up) and make quite a bit of money for the country in tourism. Not sure why we're so het up about how they used to behave years ago.

Report
LadyMontdore · 31/05/2012 11:20

Hully, now I know you are taking the piss. Fairly sure the Queen hasn't done any stabbing or strangling.
