Hully I actually find that racist!!

We do not define people from where their ancestors came from many generations before, and certainly not as an insult.

I take it you will be working and will not take part in any festivies at all?? Go and live in a republic then cause this country has a monarchy and do you know what I'm proud of it!!

TBH I think a lot of people are gritting their teeth about it all. It's been very half-hearted round our way - everyone seems to be "busy" avoiding it (including me, as best I can). I did see a bit of bunting and a Union flag flying from a window in our street for the first time this morning - but that's about it.

I expect the shops will be left with a lot of unsold tat.

What are you proud of?

What exactly?

I'm surprised that Mumsnet allows these racist remarks about the Queen being German. How many generations have to live in this country before one is English. If I have an Irish grandparent does that make me Irish or am I allowed to English/British ?

You old misery. I think it's jolly impressive that she's been alive all this time, and we all ought to be jolly proud of the parasitic old cow.

It's just an excuse for a party due to the free bank holiday day. That and the fact that the Union Jack is a so called "cool" thing at the moment, in the same ilk as the Keep Calm dross. To be honest, I bet 90% of people celebrating aren't really doing it for any royalist reasons Grin

Why would you not enjoy a street party are you not invited do you not have nice neighbours?

The thing is although you don't like / respect the Queen lots and lots of people do. It means alot to people when she a opens a new building or does a walk about or whatever. You don't have to join in with it but I don't see why others shouldn't. Expect of course that you are feeling a bit chippy and righteous for being in a minority and holding what you believe to be more enlightened views than everyone else.

Oh and didn't Harry look lovely in his Nazi uniform?

Still just the upper classes having their jolly japes eh?

I love it that you know how I am feeling. Except that you are wrong. That's the only drawback with your analysis Lady M

Street parties. don't go, noone would want you there

Respect and admire her for what? devoting her life to service to the country, never getting to do what she wants, thinking of others before herself

Having lots of houses and a giant yacht? So if you were left a house which you weren't allowed to sell what do you do?? Those houses bring in revenue for the country and employment?

Producing the spawn of the devil? plain offensive, not responding

Sitting through great long dull dinners? see answer to point !

Perpetuating a system of hierarchy and privilege that civilised nations have long since swept away? A system that produced GOVE, CAMERON and GIDEON? Bringing revenue to a country, providing stability in political crisis, (think Blair also was priviledged BTW), what have other countries got in its place, --- corrupt politicians

Yes, but I'm not chippy and righteous.

I just think everyone else is shall we say unenlightened. And worse, happy to be so.

Gosh Hully, you are talking a load of old tripe today. Just because you're in a grump about a celebration of Britishness and patriotism. Or does being patriotic to ones country also get your goat?

Also, 'theres no such thing as Britishness'. What is that supposed to mean?

Report
LadyMontdore · 31/05/2012 11:06

I don't really think you can accuse the Queen to cozying up to the Nazis. The only one that did that is the one that abdicated!

Also do you not like Germans? Lots of people in this country have ancestors from elsewhere but if you insisted on calling them 'Indian' or whatever when they are 3rd generation British and consider themselves to be British I think that would be racist.
