to understand why newbies feel unwelcome when there's a certain group of people on here that think mumsnet is all about them?

I really do understand why there is a 'flouncers corner' on this site and I understand why people feel the need to go to it!
Six months ago I joined this site and on my first ever thread there was about 10 people who all clearly knew eachother and started their own conversation and completely ignored me! I felt really unwelcome but just thought it was a one off. Ever since then I've begun to realise that its like school on here and theres the 'popular' group who seem to think that everyone should know who they are and so they just hijack everyone elses thread and talk amongst themselves ignoring other people in the process! I was even in a thread yesterday and there was a discussion and one of the popular ones said something along the lines of ' oh its jack, havent seen you for a while, hows your dad?'
To me that was rude and if you know eachother that well then shouldn't you be emailing or private messaging instead of being so rude? I can honestly say I have said something regarding to what the OP was asking and been completely ignored by what send like the usual lot talking about scones or something
Another thing which I hate is all the private jokes flying around which is between the usual lot and no one else. Fanjo??? Grow up!
The only time people seem to get noticed is when they have changed their name to something like one of the popular peoples names! Remember the whole 'whos impersonating sue's thing yesterday??? seems like thats all people cared about as yiu are sooo popular so

I haven't been on mumsnet for long either, but I think you are being really sensitive. When threads start during into personal jokes/conversations, I stop reading, because I'm not interested. You can do the same. Yes it is rude to the OP, but there are no rules against it, so shrug.

There are thousands of people reading and posting on mumsnet, and most I'm sure also have no idea what these people are talking about, so just ignore and focus on the people who are actually talking about the OP.

truthful what was your thread about, the one that got derailed by those who knew each other? I'm just thinking it might have been the subject of the thread which attracted scone chat and in-jokes - it would be interesting to know.

For example had you started a thread about your experience at Tesco's when trying to park in a P&C place and found them all occupied by old people it could explain a lot

I knew people would say go back to netmums. You lot hate netmums. Netmums dont hate you. shows who are the nice bunch really.

If people are being cliquey, and it's like school, they come over to the other side of the playground and talk to the nice gels (and chaps). There is room for everyone and we promise not to flush your head down the loos or whatever.

These posters have known each other for years, of course they have jokes between themselves. That is how friendships work. If you join a crowd of people that are good mates, you come into that group at a lower level until you are better known.

I think Hully is hilarious and spent a good time yesterday laughing at the "Ilk" jokes posted in response to a pompous comment from one poster.

I posted last week in the appropriate topic under a namechange about something sensitive to me. It was possible I could have been flamed but you know what? People were understanding and supportive and brilliant.

I am not in any in crowd but I enjoy seeing the regular names and reading about what they do. I am used to being pretty much ignored if I comment on here. But..... and this matters. On the occasions when I have needed help or advice there has always been someone there for me. Often it is that same core group which is willing to take the time. I may not know them or be part of the inner circle but they have let me in and I am grateful.
