On tv they seem like such a close and loving family.

They do seem like very nice people. Mrs Duggar is especially lovely.

BreastmilkDoesAFabLatte · 25/04/2012 20:45

They do seem like a close and loving family. But ATI is an incredibly cult-like movement, and there is huge amounts of brainwashing and image management going on.

Have you come across Razing Ruth?

FannyFifer · 25/04/2012 20:46

They make my skin crawl. [shudders]

mypersonalfavourite · 25/04/2012 20:53

Yabvu.

Their daughters are allowed no lives except to look after the men in the family.

They have kept popping out children that they cannot afford (or couldn't pre the tlc contract) or look after themselves. At six months old the baby is shipped out to the dorm to be looked after by its buddy i.e. Older child while the parents get on with conceiving the next one.

They dragged a seriously premature child off on a trip ti uk and israel before she was strong enough to cope with it and she predictable got ill and needed a doctor escorted flight home.

They were campaigning on behalfnof rick 'women must have their babies even if they were raped' santorum. Dragged half the children on the tour bus and left the others behind to be looked after by someone else as usual.

They are strong in the ati cult movement. Google them. Forget any kind of freedom for women and very little for men in how they live their wives. A daughter must ask her father before she is allowed to 'court' a boy.

They come across as lovely because they have some strong editing rights but dig a little deeper and they're awful.

This site is brilliant! Jinger is one of their daughters.

I can't stand them , a really bad advert for large families.

Older children parent the younger ones. All responsibility for the younger ones and household is shouldered by the older girls.

I know and respect a few larger families where the parents, parent all the children and only give older children a small proportion of chores.

Mrsjay · 25/04/2012 21:05

I think they are a lovelt familiy i do think Michelle is too smiley though they are part of a religion thats is patriarch motivated , so daddy knows best and girls are supposed to help out at home but the duggers seems to help each other , and I do like the eldest dugger and his wife they seem to be a nice couple too ,

mypersonalfavourite · 25/04/2012 21:07

I'm on a roll.

Michelle Duggar's tips for a happy marriage.

A husband needs a wife who respects him as a man: This one states that a woman destroys her husband?s manliness by ?being financially independent; Love is killed by self-sufficiency.?
A husband needs a wife who accepts him as a leader and believes in his God-given responsibilities
A husband needs a wife who will continue to develop inward and outward beauty: Your hairstyle, for example, can show ?obedience vs defiance? and ?personal discipline vs inconsistency,? among many other things.
A husband needs a wife who can lovingly appeal to him when he is going beyond his limitations and wisely respond to those who question his ideas, goals, or motives: ?Ask your husband to tell you when you have a resistant spirit; ask forgiveness whenever you do.?
A husband needs quality time to be alone with himself and with the Lord.
A husband needs a wife who is grateful for all he has done and all he is doing: ?Expect nothing and be genuinely grateful for each little evidence of your husband?s love.?
A husband needs a wife who will be praised by other people for her character and her good works.

Mrsjay · 25/04/2012 21:08

wow myperosnalfavourite really i didnt know that .

CountessChestyMcBoobdeLuscious · 25/04/2012 21:09

As a mum of 6, I have the Duggars to thanks for stupid comments about getting the older ones to look after the younger ones.

And thats aside from the whole cult church thing. Bob Duggar is creepy, seriously fucking creepy.

They give large families and Christians both a bad name Angry

Groovee · 25/04/2012 21:09

I do like them but I find Michelle hard to take to. I've never seen her fawn over her grandchildren the way she does with Josie. In fact when Josh and Anna announced their pregnancy with Mackenzie, I felt Michelle looked gutted it wasn't her.

lolajane2009 · 25/04/2012 21:11

i always thought they were mormons?

CountessChestyMcBoobdeLuscious · 25/04/2012 21:12

Am I the only one wondering when the great revelation will come about their family?

there will be one, of that I have no doubt!

CountessChestyMcBoobdeLuscious · 25/04/2012 21:13

:o Misread that Lola and thought "Yes they are....oh MORMONS....."

Mrsjay · 25/04/2012 21:15

Oh i dont think i like the Duggars anymore Hmm

BreastmilkDoesAFabLatte · 25/04/2012 21:16

No, they're Christians... well, sort of. They call themselves Independent Fundamental Baptists (which bears almost no resemblance to the UK Baptist church) but follow the nutjob heterodox teachings of Bill Gothard, which revolves around endless psychobabble and patriarchy more than the Bible itself. Hence the identikit haircuts and long dresses.

SmethwickBelle · 25/04/2012 21:16

Looks like far too much like hard work to me, and you'd hardly know your own children with that many. Their personalities, likes, dislikes, it would all inevitably get a bit lost in the background noise wouldn't it? Not sure I agree with siblings performing so many "parenting" roles either.

lolajane2009 · 25/04/2012 21:20

scary... just glad their views are far from c of e.

Mrsjay · 25/04/2012 21:21

Tbh i just thought they were old fashioned christian baptist who thought Pa was the head of the household , it seems a bit sinister , I did see an epsiode where her daughters went to see a music school they hoped to go to , I wasnt holding out much hope i did think they would be married off soon Hmm

It does seem the older son and his wife are not so strict about it , his wife said she didnt know if they would have a big familiy

McHappyPants2012 · 25/04/2012 21:26

Aside from the sexist view and there strong religion, the children seem happy.

OP posts:
CountessChestyMcBoobdeLuscious · 25/04/2012 21:27

his wife said she didnt know if they would have a big familiy
Which probably means "no way José!" but she wouldnt admit it on TV!

CountessChestyMcBoobdeLuscious · 25/04/2012 21:29

Yes but McHappy, thats because they dont know any other life.

They are home schooled, so dont have school friends and they travel with each other and their parents when they are trotted out as the perfect family. So they dont know that there are other ways to live where, for example, a 13 year old girl isnt automatically expected to behave like a mother to her own sibling(s) and submit her will in all things to males of the household.

I am sure I saw in one of their programs where Michelle says they limit what can be accessed on their computer because they dont want their children to see inappropriate things. Or is it because they dont want them to see a life different to theirs?

mypersonalfavourite · 25/04/2012 21:32

Mrsjay They said in their marriage vows that they'd have as many kids as god wants to give them so I think they'll be competing with ma and pa. She doesn't know because she doesn't know what god will give her.

The older son is a lazy bastard who was asleep while his wife was giving birth on the toilet. They bang on about modesty but he's willing to have all major events filmed for money. Including him calling the film crew to tell his wife she was pregnant. Sorry, to tell her she was in the mummy club. She'd left the test out for him to look at couldn't bear to look because she had been married for four whole months and wasn't pregnant yet.

The interviews with her father are even weirder and he's estranged from at least one of his children who won't follow the cult.

mypersonalfavourite · 25/04/2012 21:36

Oh oh oh and blanket training their children.

To stop a baby from getting off its play area you basically give it a smack each time it tries move off it. They are of course vague about this but I believe have admitted it at some stage.

It's a miracle that any of them have developed at all.

McHappyPants2012 · 25/04/2012 21:36

Well it seems like Anna and josh are following mil tradition 2 children with names begining with M
