On tv they seem like such a close and loving family.

I get what you are saying, and I agree with you

what does "suffer the little children to come unto me" mea?

I know it's supposed to be positive, but the word suffer seems to contrdict that

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 25/04/2012 22:32

In this sentence, "suffer" means "allow".

DrCoconut · 25/04/2012 22:33

To suffer something to happen means to permit it. It's quite different to suffering as in pain or trauma. I'm guessing a more modern translation will say allow or permit or something.

CountessChestyMcBoobdeLuscious · 25/04/2012 22:33

C&P'd from a google search. Its what I always assumed it meant but realised that I didnt actually know for sure!

"It's an archaic meaning of "suffer." In this context, it means "allow" or "permit."

'let the children come to me. do not try to stop them. for the kingdom of god belongs to them.' i think that it is it allow i might be wrong

piprabbit · 25/04/2012 22:37

Suffer in "suffer the little children" is aimed at the adults who tried to stop the children bothering Jesus It is used in the old-fashioned sense of 'permit' or 'allow'. So it really just means "Let the children come to me".

ah ha! i see! Thanks

Well that makes more sense, I know have vauge memories of reading a story alng those lines in my children's bible now.

Possibly one of the problems with the bible is the language usage - I think there is something in it about a women's place (actually I'm sure there is) and it can be interpreted in different ways.

I get the feeling that the religion the Duggars follow was created by a man who felt his place in the family should be on of top dog and chose to interpret the wording to suit.

i went to a wedding recently which was bwtween a couple of two baptists, a bit of an off shoot from regular baptists, more evangelical, and there was a lot of mentioning of the woman's role being inn the home and supporting her husband in his choices.

i shall report back when this couple start having babies and f they all have the same first letter - I'm starting to think this is part of the beliefs!

CowboysGal · 25/04/2012 22:54

I have a feeling you're talking about the family my good friend is always telling me about. A series on some random channel that I should watch.
All the children's names start with the same letter? Some of names sound almost identical...is this sounding like the same family?
If so I think I should share some of these posts with her. She sees this family as an inspiration for hers [worried smiley] Am guessing it's a very heavily edited show friend can be a little naive and often believes tv and press only deal in facts otherwise I cannot imagine she'd identify with this woman Shock

Moln · 25/04/2012 22:58

Yes Cowboys, all the children's names start with J (as does the father's I think - he's something like John Boy - initial letter vainity so what!?

BananasInBloomers · 25/04/2012 22:59

I loathe the Duggars and they are the worst example of a large family. When I was younger our neighbours had 12 children. The only time the older ones had to look after the younger ones was when the mother was rushed to hospital one day (IIRC it was due to a fall, nothing to do with being pregnant). They have all grown up now.
The girls are there to serve the men and to produce children,no other role. I notice that they do not partcipate in 'fun' activities, and are pushed to participate in more docile pastimes.
Josh is a carbon copy of is father.
Can I just ask what is FreeJinger?

I have a big family,by todays western ideals. I am frequently asked if my eldest helps with the younger ones. They all have their jobs but I am the parent so it is up to me to parent them.

BananasInBloomers · 25/04/2012 23:00

Harleyband · 25/04/2012 23:01

They are part of a very scary evangelical Christian movement based primarily in the Southern US. Although they seem benign on the TV show and often say that they don't judge others on their lifestyle choices ( like women wearing trousers and other dangerous ideas) they are actually very active politically (Mr. Duggar was a state representative and actually ran for the US Senate) and have stated goals to place Christian conservatives (and by that I mean US Christian conservatives who bear very little resemblence to UK Tories) in all levels of government to advance their agenda. It's all very scary especially as some of them are getting very close to the presidency.

BananasInBloomers · 25/04/2012 23:03

And just to add I dont think they will beat the world record of most amount of children born to one couple. Its 69.

Moln · 25/04/2012 23:03

yes that's it Jim Bob

John Boy's off the Waltons isn't he

BananasInBloomers · 25/04/2012 23:05

Yes,but the Waltons are a much more colourful family Grin
The girls wore trousers!

CountessChestyMcBoobdeLuscious · 25/04/2012 23:12

Snap Bananas, that the same with us. The older ones do sometimes babysit but they paid for it (they earn more p/h than me atm!) and have their chores but that means that one has to load and unload the dishwasher and one has to hang out and take in the washing, hardly onerous. As you said, I am my childrens parents so I look after them. The eldest DD does cook a fair bit now but she asks to as she likes it and is doing food tech for GCSE, and I often say no to her too!

LimeLeafLizard · 25/04/2012 23:16

I have always quite liked the Duggars but this thread has put me off. Scary stuff.

His name is Jim Bob, btw.

LimeLeafLizard · 25/04/2012 23:18

sorry delayed post.

How on earth did one couple manage to have 69 children?!

Moln · 25/04/2012 23:23

I'd say racy stuff such as the Walton's is banned in the Duggar house then.

Trousers on females!

CountessChestyMcBoobdeLuscious · 25/04/2012 23:26

:o Moln!

Never mind trousers....they had sinful things such as OPINIONS and VOICES OF THEIR OWN!

They will burn in hell, HELL I TELLS YA!

BananasInBloomers · 25/04/2012 23:48

In the 1700s (usual to get married at 12),lots of multiples.
Yes my kids have jobs such as putting clothes in the dryer or setting the table but certainly not expected to look after younger ones. I might rarely say could you give a cup of milk to whichever smaller one whilst I would be busy dishing up dinner or whatever.

The Duggars are famed for only having the ability to produce children. Big wow.
