On tv they seem like such a close and loving family.

I'm a Christian and spend about 4 days a week at different things at church.

I bring my DS with me to Sunday services and he's been at pretty much 95% of services since his birth 2 years ago. He chats a bit, runs around a bit, sings babble during the hymns and dances on his seat.

No one has ever advised me to hit him or teach him by controlling him physically.

Difference is I go to a normal Christian church, not a fundie one. Wouldn't dream of doing that to my child.

Pandemoniaa · 26/04/2012 20:23

The link below shows how some fundamentalist Christians use their horrid "little switches". They claim that such practises are merely instruments of training - or as they call them rods of training. The example of why it is reasonable to use a little instrument (light wooden spoon, rubber spatula, flexible tubing less than a quarter inch in diameter, or any instrument that will cause an unpleasant sting without leaving any marks) is another chilling piece of prose.

Can you seriously imagine treating a six month old baby to this sort of abuse? Because that's what the Duggars and their ilk consider to be essential elements of training a child.

From the above link:
Years ago, must have been 8 or so, I belonged to a forum called CMOMB (Christian Moms Of Many Blessings). This was before the TLC show, but Michelle was already a well known figure amongst the QFers. She came and did a guest chat and one of the things she talked about was blanket training. She used flexible rulers and talked about luring the baby off of the blanket and then swatting them with the ruler when they took the bait.

Shock Luring babies??

anonacfr, good point re: Amish rumspringa, though not all Amish youth exercise this option. Even for those who do, there is the same kind of pressure to conform and the same lack of education among the Amish that we see among the Duggars and their ilk.

The Duggars are just the tip of the iceberg WRT loony fundamentalism. Alas, some of their extreme views are shared by a surprisingly large percentage of the U.S. population.

McHappyPants2012 · 26/04/2012 20:33

Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden with the dinosaurs!). Chatting away to their kids like it was all absolute truth and anyone who doesn't believe it must be just CERAZZY!

The bible does mention dinosaurs

When I'm trying to work out if parenting styles are mainstream or a bit fundamentalist I scale it up and try to see how it would work if we all believed the same. With the duggars style, several of my friends and I would have no children and others would be barely able to feed all of theirs. Oh-and some of my friends would have died in childbirth. It works for them because of their particular way of earning money (even before tlc), their biology and health, and personality and because they live in rural Arkansas. it doesn't scale up and if everyone lived like this it would be disastrous.

BananasInBloomers · 26/04/2012 20:54

Hitting a defenseless little baby for just following their natural instinct to explore is abuse IMO.
They are media whores.

McHappyPants2012 · 26/04/2012 20:57

bannas, they do not hit the babies

craziemazie · 26/04/2012 21:07

Sky 255 Home and Health +1

Molehillmountain · 26/04/2012 21:07

It'll be home and health. I am soon to be a recovering duggar tv addict. Blush

Moln · 26/04/2012 21:08

Ah - don't have sky, I've UPC (unsure if you can get that in the UK)

Must check if it provides home and health

Meglet · 26/04/2012 21:10

I think I prefer the Kardashians TBH.

How can anyone be such a control freak that they think it's ok to hit a baby who just wants to crawl? Nutjobs Angry.

craziemazie · 26/04/2012 21:10

Home and Health is essential for such delights as the Duggars (of course!), Secretly Pregnant, I Didn't Know I Was Pregnant and Wife Swap!

BananasInBloomers · 26/04/2012 21:11

I like wife swap. Grin

McHappyPants2012 · 26/04/2012 21:12

Moln · 26/04/2012 21:23

No don't have Home and Health.

How rude - I shall inform DH that I want to get Sky so that I can catch up on Duggarage

Thanks for the youtube link McHappy - it's take the edge of my lack of H&H

crocodilesmiles · 03/05/2012 19:53

Oh, wow!

Never watched this show before but decided to watch after seeing this thread. Without me saying anything DH commented about their terrible diet and said about Mrs Duggar's annoying voice! They are slightly creepy but fascinating at the same time

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 03/05/2012 22:00

Crazymaisie - I am thinking of pitching a new show to Home and Health -

"I didn't know I was secretly pregnant with my 19th child - and counting".

Do you think it stands a chance?

TooManyPaws · 05/03/2019 22:28

Wasn't one of the older sons tried for abusing his sisters?
