To cringe when my friend talks about her "expensive" tastes?

NoddyHoldersWig · 28/12/2011 19:44

We have been friends for about 3 years. In the past year or so she's becomes obsessed with "fashion" and basically spending shit loads of money on ridiculous items. She comes into work saying stuff like "oh I've seen the most gorgeous coat, it's £485 though" she then waits for the shock response and then adds "but I love it so much - my husband said he doesn't mind if I get it" she waits again for a response and then adds "but it's Soooo expensive" blah blah on and on. So she buys the bloody thing and then starts going on and on about some new boots she's seen for £500 - same thing again - "oh but they're so expensive - oh but I love them - oh I don't know what to do - I can't stop thinking about them" on and on and on.

But then the really cringe worthy bits come when she says things like "Oh I really want this Superdry jumper I've seen - I mean, when you wear superdry people KNOW it's expensive, that's why I want one" or "I prefer the brown boots to the black ones as they LOOK more expensive and people will notice how expensive they are" Hmm

To add - she then tells me they're struggling with mortgage payments Hmm

She's my friend and everything but aibu to find the whole "I want people to think I wear expensive stuff" a bit sad and tedious?

I mean - example of how ridiculous it is - our company was in trouble and there was talk of redundancies - we're all sat around moping and she sighs and says "oh I'm so stressed out" I'm about to agree with her and she adds "I can't make up my mind about those boots" ffs

SuperDry is the label of chavs with too much spending money.

You can quote me on that to her next time she bangs on about it.

StealthPolarBear · 28/12/2011 19:45

she sounds like a sitcom character! Can't you just laugh when she starts? Or poke her in the bum with a piece of bamboo and then charge her £50?

StealthPolarBear · 28/12/2011 19:46

"To add - she then tells me they're struggling with mortgage payments "
Ask her if her mortgage is expensive but does she love it?

snowmummy · 28/12/2011 19:47

YANBU. She sounds like she has something to prove.

ImperialBlether · 28/12/2011 19:47

But doesn't anyone say anything to her about it? When you heard (presumably from her?) about her problem with the mortgage, didn't you say, "Well, you shouldn't spend a penny more than necessary, or else you'll have to sell the house"?

And when she says anything about £500 boots (ffs) doesn't anyone say, "I wouldn't like to have to repay your credit card"?

Is she a complete idiot to think that she can spend that kind of money and keep up any kind of lifestyle?

mumblechum1 · 28/12/2011 19:48

Superdry is overpriced shit for teenage boys.

I and my friend have a much more interesting and enjoyable competitiveness about how little our Primark/Oxfam stuff costs.

GeriManda · 28/12/2011 19:48

Wasn't Superdry made up by 2 British blokes purely to exploit mugs like this woman?

HappyCamel · 28/12/2011 19:48

She sounds insecure

GeriManda · 28/12/2011 19:49

Ask her if she's depressed.

DoMeDon · 28/12/2011 19:49

If she is sad, tyedious and cringw worthy it's not much of a friendship. People change - not always for the better.

Serenitysutton · 28/12/2011 19:50

Bless her, she sounds very insecure. She's not happy, deep down you know.

noblegiraffe · 28/12/2011 19:50

When it's non-school uniform day at school half the kids turn up in superdry stuff. I thought it was cheap because it's so ubiquitous.

LynetteScavo · 28/12/2011 19:51

Well, some people do spend this much money on clothes 0 but superdry? Hmm My 12 yo DS thinks it's cool, so it obviously ins't Grin

I really have no time for people like this.

Their clothing dilemmas can be funny, but if they then can't pay their mortgage, I lose patience. Very quickly.

SuePurblybilt · 28/12/2011 19:52

Superdry is only worn by teenagers smelling of Lynx here. I associate it with same. You may tell her that from me I maybe slightly bitter as I put back £49 boots in the sales today cos I am poor Grin

Are we ending every post like that now btw?

Nobody challenges her on it really because we don't want to offend her but it's so bloody boring. She goes on and on and on about fashion and all the stuff she simply "must" have and it seems that she only wants this stuff because it's expensive, not because its any different to what you'd get in Next/H&M etc.

I mean, just before crimbo she came to work in that huge £485 furry coat. Besides the obvious Chewbacca resemblence it didn't look any different to a £70 furry coat I'd see in a local shop. Then it pissed it down and it got drenched and she realised it certainly wasn't very practical!

I did say to her when she mentioned the mortgage "why you spending £500 on boots if that's the case??" and she just laughs and says "I know! I can't help it though, I see things and I just have to buy them!"

It's a recent thing. She never used to be like this.

noblegiraffe, Superdry is uniform that you wear when you are not wearing your school uniform. Apparently "you have to wear it" according to my 12 yo. Hmm

LynetteScavo · 28/12/2011 19:53

Hahahahaha! @ smelling of Lynx. So true! Grin

yellowraincoat · 28/12/2011 19:54

She sounds really insecure.

Superdry mings. I didn't realise it was expensive, I thought it was a cheapster label.

manticlimactic · 28/12/2011 19:54

Do people really say that about brown boots?

StealthPolarBear · 28/12/2011 19:55

this is the first time I have heard of superdry - it sounds like a make of hat or umbrella to me.
Honestly, if they don't sell it in the supermarkets.

goldbow · 28/12/2011 19:55

Why are you friends with her again, she sounds boring and she wears superdry. Hmm

StealthPolarBear · 28/12/2011 19:55

or paint. Superdry in pure brilliant white

thunderboltsandlightning · 28/12/2011 19:56

She does sound insecure.

If you like her, maybe you could say "is this stuff making you happy?"

NoddyHoldersWig · 28/12/2011 19:56

I also hate superdry, god awful stuff. I only went in once because it was a new store and everyone was raving about it. Hated it, never been in since.

She's also getting in the habit of walking behind people saying stuff like "that coat she's wearing is about £120, I saw it in but I think it looks cheap" or "oh that's a nice version of that jacket I was looking at! wonder where she got it! should I go and ask her?" or the more bitchy "oh my god I'd never wear anything with Paul's Boutique all over it like that girl in front" Hmm

Remind me of being back at school.

Sounds like she has a problem.
