To cringe when my friend talks about her "expensive" tastes?

We have been friends for about 3 years. In the past year or so she's becomes obsessed with "fashion" and basically spending shit loads of money on ridiculous items. She comes into work saying stuff like "oh I've seen the most gorgeous coat, it's £485 though" she then waits for the shock response and then adds "but I love it so much - my husband said he doesn't mind if I get it" she waits again for a response and then adds "but it's Soooo expensive" blah blah on and on. So she buys the bloody thing and then starts going on and on about some new boots she's seen for £500 - same thing again - "oh but they're so expensive - oh but I love them - oh I don't know what to do - I can't stop thinking about them" on and on and on.

But then the really cringe worthy bits come when she says things like "Oh I really want this Superdry jumper I've seen - I mean, when you wear superdry people KNOW it's expensive, that's why I want one" or "I prefer the brown boots to the black ones as they LOOK more expensive and people will notice how expensive they are" Hmm

To add - she then tells me they're struggling with mortgage payments Hmm

She's my friend and everything but aibu to find the whole "I want people to think I wear expensive stuff" a bit sad and tedious?

I mean - example of how ridiculous it is - our company was in trouble and there was talk of redundancies - we're all sat around moping and she sighs and says "oh I'm so stressed out" I'm about to agree with her and she adds "I can't make up my mind about those boots" ffs

Is she spending your money?

oiwheresthecoffee · 28/12/2011 20:01

Superdry is chavtastic. she has a point about pauls boutique - schoolgirls only. Just tell her ,her expensive tat looks just the same as that primark version they ve just brought out...aazing that you cant tell the difference isnt it Wink

tardisjumper · 28/12/2011 20:01

Is she just a bit thick as she can't see the obvious irony?

Sorry feeling a bit bitter as I have just spent xmas with FIL who boasts about his 'complex' interests. He goes on about the cost of stuff ad then doing faux shocked face. Repulsive

oiwheresthecoffee · 28/12/2011 20:01

Please excuse the typos !

QueenLush · 28/12/2011 20:06

Superdry sounds like incontinence pads or knickers. You know, like the next step up from Tena Lady. Grin

rathlin · 28/12/2011 20:09

Thought superdry was a chain of hairdressers - feeling very old as I sup my pinot grigo and much my way through a double pack of value jaffa cakes!

Flisspaps · 28/12/2011 20:13

Geri Superdry was started by Julian Dunkerton, who started out on a market stall (nothing wrong with that). They started off in Cheltenham, it's defintely not the upmarket expensive Japanese brand that some people like OPs mate assume it is Xmas Grin

NoddyHoldersWig Have you tried playing her at her own game? Pretend-fawning over even more ridiculously expensive items to see how far she will go to keep up?

TalkinPeace2 · 28/12/2011 20:14

I wear Jaeger, House of Denim, Jasper Conran, and various obscure Italian stuff
and never pay more than £5 an item
Oxfam in nice market towns is my tailor
I suggest you repay you "friend" in kind
apparently Cirencester is good for top designer kit in charity shops for under £15 an item ....

olibeansmummy · 28/12/2011 20:42

Tbh I'd be quite worried about her. She sounds as if she has a real problem, especially as she can't afford it and she's only become like this recently.

ChickenLickn · 28/12/2011 20:46

are you sure the coat was 485 and not primarni? Grin

ChickenLickn · 28/12/2011 20:46

and

LoveHandles88 · 28/12/2011 20:47

Tell her to grow up and get a life. I hope til one of those people hears her and turns and thumps her.
Why is Superdry getting such a pasting? If there weren't people buying the stuff, it'd go under, same as anywhere else.

LoveHandles88 · 28/12/2011 20:47

...not sure where 'til' came from......

LeBOF · 28/12/2011 20:50

I can see that it's very frustrating for you. But chipolata in your ear anyway, word.

happynew2012 · 28/12/2011 20:55

She sounds like the shopaholic woman in the Sophie kinsella books

NitroNita · 28/12/2011 20:56

People like this ARE tiring. But usually they're trying to disguise something else going on in their lives.

BlastOff · 28/12/2011 20:56

I've never heard of Superdry before.

NitroNita · 28/12/2011 20:56

Hotdog up your nose, btw

LePruneDeMaTante · 28/12/2011 20:59

I'll cut to the chase.

Why is this person your friend?

WTAF · 28/12/2011 21:06

Am I really the only person (apart from SuePurbly who cracked me up) who has scrolled down this far and can't believe that noone has mentioned the sausage in grandads eye thing?!

YANBU about the rest though!

LeBOF · 28/12/2011 21:09

No, there have been about four others, I think, WTAF.

Gammon up yer jacksie, auntie!

yellowraincoat · 28/12/2011 21:12

I love it when, on any thread where you complain about someone, people tell you to dump them/leave them/cut them out.

Seriously, we all have friends who do our nut in sometimes, don't we? The OP said she didn't used to be like this and she's clearly wondering if she should still be her friend. Or do you all just cut people out of your lives after one infraction?

It's hardly like the friend is abusing the OP or treating her like shit, she just has an annoying habit. Maybe the OP will get over it, maybe the friend will stop doing it, maybe the friend is having some issues and using expensive clothes to cover them up, maybe the friend is just a self-obsessed loon and none of this has come out yet.

SuePurblybilt · 28/12/2011 21:13

Chicken dipper in the bellybutton tho, to be fair.

southeastastra · 28/12/2011 21:15

she sounds like a chav

bin her

staylucky · 28/12/2011 21:20

What do you think brought on the change? Has her DH had a pay rise? Maybe she's on the game?
