to expect posters to learn how to link properly?

It is really easy.

OPTION 1
just write the URL*and tick the little box at the bottom of posting box that says, "Convert links automatically"

www.mumsnet.com

OPTION 2

put before the URL* then leave a space, then write the word that you would like to appear then close with

so [°[°mumsnet . com Look at this on Mumsnet]° ] (without the °)

Look at this on Mumsnet

It makes it much easier when I can just click and follow a link without having to C&P.

And no, I have nothing better to worry about and yes, I know this is petty. And yes, I did preview this to make sure my links were working or this would have been embarrassing.

*an URL is the webpage address, such as www.mumsnet.com or www.linkingiseasy.co.uk

YABU to expect people to write out links.

It is much easier to copy and paste them.

crazynanna · 14/11/2011 12:29

So,to write "look at this"...can I do [[ the C&P link and tick the box? Smile

valiumredhead · 14/11/2011 12:33

We're too busy focusing on our grammar to worry about learning how to link Wink

MmeLindor. · 14/11/2011 12:35

No, Crazynanna. You have to choose. If you want the link to look tidy, so you do Option 2.

If you are posting a link to something you don't always want the URL in your post cause it can a) spoil the surprise or b) look untidy

Oh, look at this cute little puppy

or

www.soest.hawaii.edu/expeditions/mariana/images/annsoupy/kids-easter%20soupy%20closeup.jpg

You would not click the second one, would you. Cause you know what it is.

YANBU to find the site more pleasant to use when links are done correctly, but YABU to sneer at posters who may be new and don't realise the capacity to do that exists. Yes they have to learn, but maybe in order to learn it they have to do it wrong once and have a pedant kindly poster point them in the right direction.

I am not sneering.

Where am I sneering?

I am a kindly poster, I am trying to help those who cannot link to learn how to do it.

I have been here for too long nearly 7 years. I only learnt how to link properly about 8 weeks ago. Because I am technologically inept. I even had to start a thread getting people to talk me through how to do it, step by step. I only learnt how to Namechange 3 months ago, too. I'm just crap with technology.

YABabitU. Though I will admit it looks tidier if you link properly.

shoobydoowop · 14/11/2011 12:41

YABU to 'expect' anything from a forum of strangers

You are being a terrible bossy boots and for that reason I shall not be reading your instructions and will continue to reside in the year 1898 that knows not of whizzy high tech sorcery.

spugglers · 14/11/2011 12:48

Someone on mumsnet showed me how to do this, I think it may have been you!

Now I use my iPhone it just seems too fiddly so I don't post links.

I wanted to post a link to a story in The Times today about legal brothels in Las Vegas (distressing) but I don't know how to Blush

YANBU. I'm frustrated by my own crapness too. Angry

crazynanna · 14/11/2011 12:49

just practising

SemperUbiSubUbi · 14/11/2011 12:49

I am kind of with you really.

I dont really mind people not doing but I do get a bit rolley eyed at people saying they cant do it.

A) If you can do smileys you can do links.
B) The instructions are written out for you.

I dont think saying im not very good with computers/technology is an excuse. You dont ^need to be good at computers/technology to follow simple instructions.

If you can read English, click a button and follow instructions theres no excuse not to be able to do it.

Is there?

MmeLindor. · 14/11/2011 12:52

Hurrah, well done Shakey.

Crazynanna
You were missing a : I think. Try copying and pasting the link.

See, it is a lovely supportive thread.

Linkers Anonymous.

Who else wants a go?

Constance
I may never open another of your links again.
