To be appalled by the bad language used on this forum

I know I will probably be shot down as I am a newbie on here but I recently found this site whilst searching for something and found the AIBU threads very interesting. I find it intriguing how different people react to the same situation and it really makes you realise that we are not all the same, and the world is better for it.

What I have found so appalling though is the frequent use of swearing throughout these posts. I have been truly shocked by this as it is a forum used mainly by parents. Is this the example to set children?

There is something about swearing in writing which makes it so much worse than in conversation, although that is not nice either. It seems so much more deliberate in writing.

When did it become acceptable to use such language unnecessarily and excessively just for effect?

This is a parents' forum, with grown ups talking to grown ups.

It's not how people talk in front of their DCs.

If the tone of the site is not for you, then there are other sites where you might feel more comfortable.

As we are not talking to children on here there isn't a need to be a good example. Just because you become a parent doesn't mean you have to be on your way to sainthood as soon as you leave the delivery suite.

You might prefer Netmums if you have an issue with bad language. they crack down on it over there. Cunts.

I think the point is that people can use this forum to vent and use the sort of language that most of us wouldn't use in front of children. It's an escape.

I'm pretty sure the majority of people don't let their children read Mumsnet, or swear in front of their children. You might want to hide this thread if you don't like swearing because you will just get loads of replies of 'cuntchops' and 'fuck nugget'. I quite like these threads actually, there's always some really creative swearing on them.

Um, children aren't reading this forum. This is where the grown ups meet. If your children are reading then you're doing it all wrong...

Only teenagers think that swearing is clever and do it for effect. Grown ups may swear because they feel like it. There is a difference.

Hi moomoo44.

Its just the way Mumsnet is and always has been (I believe the site has been running for 11 years this year).

You will now find that about a thousand people will pile on and swear and tell you to fuck off to Netmums. If you take it all in good humour and stick around, you will probably come to appreciate this lightly moderated site which has its funny old conventions and customs but is generally quite welcoming.

Parents are people too dammit! We need to vent our frustrations! I doubt very much a lot of the people who swear or say fuck nuggets on here would do so in front of their children Angry

Buggery bollocks is my favourite a la Edwina in Absolutely Fabulous.

I find it more disturbing to be on a site where the swearing is moderated.

I do swear in front of my children, not that often I have to say but have neen known to say fuck it, bollocks and shit quite a bit.

They are 23 and 18 I have never heard them swear ever, and according to my old neighbours they never did either!

So you can furk right off and back again with the example to children.

Children behave how they are brought up to behave. Hence I have children with impeccable manners! Nur.
