to have refused to pay?

Yesterday I found a cat in my house. I must have left the door open while taking some shopping in. Cats give me the creeps so I asked my neighbour (a cat lover) to get the cat out of the house for me as it was in my daughter's bedroom and wouldn't come out from under the bed.

It turned out to be one of her cats. It had its front paw stuck through its collar and it seemed to be distressed. She took the cat away. I can't imagine what the cat could have injured itself on in my house.

This morning she has turned up at my door with a bill from the vet for £60 which she thinks I should pay. Apparently the cat needed a check up as it now has a shoulder injury. She thinks that I should pay because the "cat obviously couldn't have got into the house in that state so it must have had an accident in my house".

I have refused to pay. It's her cat so the vet's bill is her problem. She thinks I am being completely unreasonable and apparently intends to sue me - according to the very gossipy neighbour over the road who just happened to pop over while I was bringing the bin in because she was watching her window waiting for me to leave my house because she has a juicy titbit of gossip to impart.

So mumsnet jury AIBU?

woowoo2 · 12/09/2011 13:26

YANBU - her cat, her responsibility.

Tell her to naff off!

doublestandard · 12/09/2011 13:27

YANBU. She sounds like a loon.

readywithwellies · 12/09/2011 13:27

No way. She is demented.

ddubsgirl · 12/09/2011 13:27

i wouldnt pay,she cant prove the cat hurt itself in your home, poor cat most likey ran into the nearest warm place because it was hurt, which happend to be your home.

FetchezLaVache · 12/09/2011 13:27

YADNBU. Tell her to bring legal action and be damned!

LaurieFairyCake · 12/09/2011 13:27

She's utterly, completely, wrong. And bonkers.

Ignore, ignore, laugh uproariously when she mentions it.

Alliwantisaroomsomewhere · 12/09/2011 13:27

How did you manage not to laugh at her when she asked you to pay?

Her cat: her bill!

YANBU.

cheekeymonkey · 12/09/2011 13:28

Eh? What a nutter, ignore her or threaten to send her the bill to have your whole house fumigated as you are extrememly allergic to moggies! Hmm

bringbacksideburns · 12/09/2011 13:28

Is she having a larf!!!??? Shock

No YANBU!

ripstheirthroatoutliveupstairs · 12/09/2011 13:28

YANBU.

TheJiminyConjecture · 12/09/2011 13:29

I'd present her with a bill of £120 for professional carpet cleaning of my house. I'm allergic so would want to know there was no hair or wee or pooh on my carpets and if she's going to be a pita so am I

YANBU - her cat had an accident, not your fault.

doublestandard · 12/09/2011 13:29

Not only don't pay but suggest she takes a trip to the GP. To get her head examined.

bigfatgypsy · 12/09/2011 13:29

YANBU I'm a cat lover too but would never expect you to pay this if I were her. She sounds like a nutter. How can she possibly prove it was your fault?

DELHI · 12/09/2011 13:29

YANBU She's crazy and should take responsibility for her pet. 'Had its paw stuck through it's collar' ? ? that's how it got injured, and she must have put the collar on, so just ignore her. Or let her sue, she won't get anywhere.

ravenc · 12/09/2011 13:29

YANBU i would of said no to.

HairyGrotter · 12/09/2011 13:29

Holy shit...the brass balls on that lady must be a sight.

YADDDDNBU

sue52 · 12/09/2011 13:30

She's deluded. YANBU.

kelly2000 · 12/09/2011 13:31

She is being unreasonable, just ignore her. It will cost her more in legal fees than she spent, and no "no win no fee" type lawyer will take on a £60 bill.

mummymccar · 12/09/2011 13:31

YANBU - She has no proof the cat was injured in your house. I have 3 cats and unless somebody had directly caused the accident in front of me then I wouldn't ask them to pay the bill. Refuse to pay it, tell her you got advice from CAB who advised you on your rights - that should shut her up!

catgirl1976 · 12/09/2011 13:32

YANBU. I love my cats but they are my responsiblity no one elses. It sounds like he got his paw caught in his collar and strained his shoulder trying to get it out. Could have happened anywhere (and is why mine DON'T wear collars as it happened to one of them when he was young)

She sounds like a loon

gotolder · 12/09/2011 13:32

YANBU: the woman's deludedShock

festi · 12/09/2011 13:32

ViviPru · 12/09/2011 13:33

BluMoon · 12/09/2011 13:33

Ridiculous. I would be pissed off it was in my house to start with! YADNBU!
