to have refused to pay?

Yesterday I found a cat in my house. I must have left the door open while taking some shopping in. Cats give me the creeps so I asked my neighbour (a cat lover) to get the cat out of the house for me as it was in my daughter's bedroom and wouldn't come out from under the bed.

It turned out to be one of her cats. It had its front paw stuck through its collar and it seemed to be distressed. She took the cat away. I can't imagine what the cat could have injured itself on in my house.

This morning she has turned up at my door with a bill from the vet for £60 which she thinks I should pay. Apparently the cat needed a check up as it now has a shoulder injury. She thinks that I should pay because the "cat obviously couldn't have got into the house in that state so it must have had an accident in my house".

I have refused to pay. It's her cat so the vet's bill is her problem. She thinks I am being completely unreasonable and apparently intends to sue me - according to the very gossipy neighbour over the road who just happened to pop over while I was bringing the bin in because she was watching her window waiting for me to leave my house because she has a juicy titbit of gossip to impart.

So mumsnet jury AIBU?

YADNU - tell her to fuck off.

wildhairrunning · 12/09/2011 13:52

Yanbu at all and she is a twat. Please direct her to this thread so she understands just how stupid she is! Please!

eurochick · 12/09/2011 13:52

Ignore the crazy cat lady. YANBU.

LDNmummy · 12/09/2011 13:53

She sounds like a loon, YANBU.

Tell her that you plan to sue her for her cat being in your house and causing you unnecessary distress Grin

She must be crazy Confused

SouthernFriedTofu · 12/09/2011 13:55

YANBU, the cat probably did go in to your house with the injury and thats why it ran somewhere safe to hide. How could your house be more dangerous than hers?

cheekeymonkey · 12/09/2011 13:57

Yes, YABU, pay up,buy her flowers and chocolates and take time off work to help her care for her cat.
And in way of apology to moggy a diamond studded (better fitting) colour might be in order!
Oh, and still send her the £300 bill for fumigation and carpet cleaning. Smile

avoider · 12/09/2011 13:57

YANBU and nobody will sue you for £60. Encourage her down the solicitors and let her try.

cheekeymonkey · 12/09/2011 13:58

collar - duh!

RebelFromTheWaistDown · 12/09/2011 13:59

YANBU. The accident was her fault - she should have been watching her cat.

HeadfirstForHalos · 12/09/2011 14:03

YANBU I have 3 cats and I would be apologising if mine had gone into a neighbours house. Even if one had accidentally been hurt. She is nuts.

Kladdkaka · 12/09/2011 14:03

Tell the gossipy neighbour that the bedroom was infested with fleas and you've had to pay over £thousand to get it sorted out. Oh and don't forget to mention how you'll have to recoup that from the mad cat lady. Then sit back with a cuppa and let the games commence.

Blu · 12/09/2011 14:03

So what if the cat did injure itself in your house? You are not obliged to keep a cat-friendly house in case some marauding cat gets in, you have absolutley no 'duty of care' for cats that tangle themselves in their own collars.
Unless you deliberately and cruelly stuffed the paw through it's collar I can't see what liabiloity you could possibly have.

She is a total loon.

ViviPru · 12/09/2011 14:07

OP YABU if you don't tell us more stories about crazy cat lady - this can't be her only foray into mentile behaviour? MORE MORE!

slavetofilofax · 12/09/2011 14:08

Your neighbour is a cheeky bitch who is completely off her rocker.

Give her a bill for your carpet cleaning and invent an allergy.

MissTapestry · 12/09/2011 14:17

YADNBU, and tell her that'll be £60 to buy enough wine to get you over the trauma get the carpet cleaned! Wink

Snorbs · 12/09/2011 14:26

I'd be tempted to tell her "Your cat got its paw stuck in a collar that you put on it. At what point does your inability to care for your cat properly become my responsibility?"

RedHotPokers · 12/09/2011 14:31

Just ignore her. She is clearly off her rocker!

fanjobanjowanjo · 12/09/2011 14:44

YANBU! I have cats, and they never wear collars for this reason. She is crazy/nuts/demented etc etc.

Perhaps advise her about pet insurance.

bigbuttons · 12/09/2011 14:46

YANBU what a loonie! Not you, the neighbour

PommePoire · 12/09/2011 14:54

Cat lover here and another one who thinks that your neighbour is nuts. If she approaches you again, you should definitely say what snorbs said. The cat could have got it's paw stuck in it's collar anywhere, it's a good thing (for the cat, not so much for you!) that it happened in your house, where you did the caring thing, despite your antipathy. She should be thanking you!

MamaChoo · 12/09/2011 15:46

Yet another cat owner here who won't use collars because of the risk of injury - although I am going to trump the others with my £1000 vet bill (thank god for insurance). The cat injured itself because it was wearing a collar that had been fitted by her. What on earth do you have to do with that? Tell her that you've cottoned on to her trick of trapping the cat's leg in its collar then encouraging it into her neighbours houses so she can scam them. Its no ruder than demanding you pay her vets bill!

reasonstobecheerful · 12/09/2011 15:47

another cat lover here, your neighbour is clearly nuts, I'd be giving you a box of chocs to say sorry for any inconvenience my cat caused you.

LikeACandleButNotQuite · 12/09/2011 15:52

Erm, the cat wasn't injured by anything in your house...it was injured by her own collar which I'm presuming she bought and put on it. Therefore regardless of where the cat was, it could have done this. She is incredibly stupid if she thinks it is your fault. It is hers: collars are dangerous.
