to have refused to pay?

Yesterday I found a cat in my house. I must have left the door open while taking some shopping in. Cats give me the creeps so I asked my neighbour (a cat lover) to get the cat out of the house for me as it was in my daughter's bedroom and wouldn't come out from under the bed.

It turned out to be one of her cats. It had its front paw stuck through its collar and it seemed to be distressed. She took the cat away. I can't imagine what the cat could have injured itself on in my house.

This morning she has turned up at my door with a bill from the vet for £60 which she thinks I should pay. Apparently the cat needed a check up as it now has a shoulder injury. She thinks that I should pay because the "cat obviously couldn't have got into the house in that state so it must have had an accident in my house".

I have refused to pay. It's her cat so the vet's bill is her problem. She thinks I am being completely unreasonable and apparently intends to sue me - according to the very gossipy neighbour over the road who just happened to pop over while I was bringing the bin in because she was watching her window waiting for me to leave my house because she has a juicy titbit of gossip to impart.

So mumsnet jury AIBU?

(now that would BU)

ChickenLickn · 12/09/2011 20:40

that was a bit harsh wasnt it. sorry.

HecateQueenOfWitches · 12/09/2011 20:43

"Just you try to take me to court and I will tell them to track the original owners from that microchip you told me about. I don't think the court will be happy to hear you stole the cat."

Fight fire with fire, I say.

bemybebe · 12/09/2011 20:47

That will "learn her"? Bloody hell.

Onemorning · 12/09/2011 21:02

YANBU.

Tell her to fuck off, and to keep fucking off. And report her for stealing the cat in the first place...

(Sane cat lady here too)

oopslateagain · 12/09/2011 21:22

YA so NBA!!!! She is clearly deranged. On what planet can YOU be held responsible for HER cat hurting itself in YOUR house?

I suppose if you had lilies and the cat ate them and got poisoned, that would be your fault too? Hmm

PommePoire · 12/09/2011 21:40

Talker2010 Very funny Grin

Seriously, the up-date is even more bonkers! Rustle the cat back, get it's chip scanned and reunite it with it's grateful original owners.

OohIsThatAFlake · 13/09/2011 00:16

ChickenLickn are you from where you sound like you're from with your 'learn her'?!

Apologies for minor hijack

normaleggy · 13/09/2011 00:22

YANBU. Cat wankers.

lurkinginthebackground · 13/09/2011 00:25

Another YANBU.

blondieminx · 13/09/2011 00:40

YANBU. Another sane (ish) cat owner here - her cat, her responsibility. If she dares mentions it again I'd definitely mention the -wine- carpet cleaning! Grin. Do love the idea of MN supported cat rustling, wouldn't that make a great story for the daily fail

ripstheirthroatoutliveupstairs · 13/09/2011 08:48

See, this has answered a question I had. My boys were both castrated and chipped. The vet gave Hmm us a disc to say they were chipped. I got them both collars with quick releases but even making the collars as small as possible they are too big for my skinny boys.
I suppose they don't have to wear a collar do they?

NestaFiesta · 13/09/2011 09:13

No need for cat collars, especially if they are chipped. A cat expert once told me she had seen so many cats injured or killed by their collars. once they are chipped, no need for a collar surely? However, I am not a cat expert and happy to stand corrected. Since then though, my cat has been chipped and collarless.

OP- YANBU- this woman is mad and vindictive. If my cat fell out fo a tree, I wouldn't sue the owner of the tree! It's insanity!

lollygag · 13/09/2011 10:22

This is the type of behaviour that gives Feminism a bad name! Just because she's a woman she thinks it's all somebody elses fault! Steer clear would be my advice.

catsrus · 13/09/2011 10:44

blimey - I once had a cat so badly injured by a collar that she needed to stay in the vets for 2 weeks mega £££ - my fault for not realising how dangerous they were, never used them since. She's bonkers. YANBU.

pramsgalore · 13/09/2011 10:49

tell her to get lost, its her cat, her vet bill YANBU

rebl · 13/09/2011 10:55

YANBU. My cat often get his front leg through the collar. I can't see how this is an accident. I think its the cat being daft! Got nothing to do with where it was found either. Don't pay.

HeavyHeidi · 13/09/2011 10:56

"can't because it's already microchipped as belonging to someone else" Shock

what? if she's the rightful owner or caretaker of the cat then she can change the name/address/contact numbers on the chip. If she's not, why hasn't the vet scanned the cat and reported it? Honestly, I would call her vet and tell the story - friends of mine had their Jack Russell puppy stolen 5 months ago and just got it back, because the person who bought the stolen puppy finally took it to the vet, who scanned the chip and called the real owner.

as for collars, if it's not quick release, it's very dangerous. If it is, the cats will lose them about every second day - our youngest cat (all chipped, of course) is still a bit silly and therefore wears a reflective one for safety reasons, but we've gone through half a dozen already! so as protection against getting lost, the collars are not that great anyway.

rebl · 13/09/2011 10:58

And if its already microchipped and she acquired the cat in a legit way then she can get the details altered to her and her address quite easily. Will cost her less than £60 Grin.

Malcontentinthemiddle · 13/09/2011 10:59

What on earth has it got to do with feminism?

YANBU. Silly cow.

LemonDifficult · 13/09/2011 11:01

YANBU.

More, more, more. Where is the cat from?

cheekeymonkey · 13/09/2011 11:22

"learn her", West Midlands I think?
