Poncy fish and chips wtf

ArseholesFlatfish · 29/07/2011 19:52

We ate out today and I had fishnchips
The fish was cooked in tempura batter, the seven chunky chips where placed in a nice little pile and they didnt have mushy peas they had crushed minted petit pois

I dont know about you but I like getting my gob round a nice thick batter that can stand being smothered in vinegar and mushy peas and ketchup and does not disintegrate like tissue paper.

That gorden bluey has a lot to answer for

well why go to a poncy fish and chip place then?

Hassled · 29/07/2011 19:55

WTF indeed. I hate this. I hate it and I'm a complete ponce. That Jenga game construction of chips - what are they thinking? Or worse, when they're served in a cone of fake newspaper. And minted petits pois - that's just wrong.

LetThereBeRock · 29/07/2011 19:58

I much prefer a tempura better.

LetThereBeRock · 29/07/2011 19:58

Batter.

TartyDoris · 29/07/2011 20:00

chip shops in the south are crap. you can't even get gravy! or scraps.

Columbia999 · 29/07/2011 20:01

What TartyDoris said. Come to Yorkshire for proper fish and chips! Grin

lawnimp · 29/07/2011 20:01

well in live down south and our local chippy is blardy lovely

Andrewofgg · 29/07/2011 20:01

Who remembers when real fish and chips were served in real newspaper, none of this white greaseproof rubbish?

The ink ran and added a tang to the taste of the fish.

I would suggest that those who have never experienced it bring home some fish and chips and try it, but I expect modern printing methods use ink which would not taste the same. Ah well!

trumpton · 29/07/2011 20:01

Umm ! Chips, cheese and gravy !! or Chips, cheese and curry sauce !! Grin

catgirl1976 · 29/07/2011 20:02

Oh no I love Jenga chips - and fake paper cones! I am easily impressed but that does sound yummy. Not the same as "proper" fish and chips of course, but still a time and place for it

TheOriginalFAB · 29/07/2011 20:04

I live in the bloody South and really really really miss cake and chips.

InfestationofLannisters · 29/07/2011 20:04

Not sure about poncey but I live in the S.E and it was a revelation when I visited the Midlands where DH is from and had decent fish and chips cooked beef dripping

I like to visit the in-laws as often as possible. They think I love them Grin

Minted tiny peas sound nice but not with a takeaway FGS.

Did the chips come with aioli? That's proper wanky IMO.

LineRunner · 29/07/2011 20:05

I've started doing that Jenga thing with my son's Bird's Eye waffles.

Mmm, scraps. Have moved to the sw and miss scraps. And patties.

headfairy · 29/07/2011 20:13

:o @ jenga chips

headfairy · 29/07/2011 20:14

I'm obssessed now!!

Hassled · 29/07/2011 20:14

Burgers served on a chopping board winds me right up as well. Or sometimes a bit of slate - who wants to eat off a bit of slate?

headfairy · 29/07/2011 20:15

Esp hassled when you use your knife on the slate and it's like someone running their fingers down a blackboard

catgirl1976 · 29/07/2011 20:18

To be fair it sounds like you ordered fish and chips in a restaurant, not in a fish and chip shop. So you were not likely to get fish and chip shops chips. Go to a chippy if you need lard and ketchup :)

Although to be fair our local chippy is pretty poncey - halibut, home made crab cakes, wine, rick stein and gordon ramsay have been and they have framed the signed napkins etc.

Sn0wflake · 29/07/2011 20:23

I want chips now...

BulletWithAName · 29/07/2011 20:24

Mushy peas

Thelmapeace · 29/07/2011 20:26

Off on holiday to Bamburgh next week. I'm so looking forward to fish and chips from Seahouses. Drool.

HairyBeaver · 29/07/2011 20:28

I live in S.E and always have scraps with my chips Grin

Shutupanddrive · 29/07/2011 20:28
