Poncy fish and chips wtf

We ate out today and I had fishnchips
The fish was cooked in tempura batter, the seven chunky chips where placed in a nice little pile and they didnt have mushy peas they had crushed minted petit pois

I dont know about you but I like getting my gob round a nice thick batter that can stand being smothered in vinegar and mushy peas and ketchup and does not disintegrate like tissue paper.

That gorden bluey has a lot to answer for

Any Laaanderars abaaat?

My Dad once took me to The Seashell as a child. He thought it did the best F&C in the United Kingdom.

He was so wrong, bless him.

I just asked my husband about the newspaper print stuff. He said the old ink was a mix of oil and soot, not nice but relatively harmless. They don't know the full effect of injesting the new ink but it can cause cancer. Best stick to plain paper.

bandgeek · 29/07/2011 21:32

Mmm got a craving for a fish supper with everything and extra brown sauce now! Grin

chirpchirp · 29/07/2011 21:36

Having lived in Edinburgh for so long I'm always disappointed if I travel south (or anywhere else in Scotland for that matter) and can't get "salt and sauce" on my chips - the sauce is 2 thirds brown sauce and 1 third vinegar. Mmmmmmm

pictish · 29/07/2011 21:48

Moan' the Embra!!

Doon wi Weegieland. Nae broon sauce? Nae guid.

InstantAtom · 29/07/2011 21:50

YANBU, couldn't agree more OP.

lookingfoxy · 29/07/2011 21:57

Ugh, brown sauce only good on mince and tatties, otherwise its the bin for it!!
A spicy Haggis supper drenched in salt and vinegar, now your talking!

I'll second the Blue Dolphin. Absolutely lush.

iscream · 29/07/2011 22:39

I'm making fish and chips for dinner. I haven't deep fried fish in 30 years, anyone have a great batter recipe for me?

Deflatedballoonbelly · 29/07/2011 22:42

I agree with Blue Dolphin Hastings!

iscream · 29/07/2011 22:49

Found a beer batter recipe, so don't need one now, :)

PirateDinosaur · 29/07/2011 22:50

I once stayed in a hotel that included on its menu fish and chips with mushy peas "in a filo pastry basket". I think I win the poncey fish and chips award...

BustersOfDoom · 29/07/2011 22:58

We went to Rick Stein's poncy and expensive chippy in Padstow. DP whinged the whole way through that the food wasn't as good as our local chippy. He was right. You really can't beat a Yorkshire chippy!

And a squirt of Salad Cream is bloody lovely on chips and scraps!! And peas. Peas and salad cream are a revelation, I promise you..

frazzle26 · 30/07/2011 08:43

There are some lovely fish and chip shops in Cornwall which is not far from where I live. It's not just the North that do good fish and chips.

diddl · 30/07/2011 13:30

Oh I used to love being in St Ives & eating FnCs!

And Harts Ice Cream Parlour (Shows age)

GwendolineMaryLacey · 30/07/2011 13:33

My parents were so disgusted with Mr Stein's chips in Padstow that my dad wrote to the Rickster and got a free fish and chip supper and a signed book as compo. I thought they were fine but I'm a pig easily suited :o

GwendolineMaryLacey · 30/07/2011 13:34

One of the best chippers I know is in Ventnor on the Isle of Wight. Come in a box like a pizza box and are bloody lovely and massive

oiwheresthecoffee · 30/07/2011 15:35

iamnotsuperwoman · 30/07/2011 16:03

I had Rick Stein's Fish & Chips (in beef dripping) on holiday in Padstow last week. They were amazing but the tartare sauce was a bit bland.
:)

catgirl1976 · 30/07/2011 17:58

Oh God Chips and Cheese. I love it.

I live by the sea and also work in the next town up 1 minute from a chip shop that does a "cheese deal", which is cheesey chips and a drink. I feel so WRONG and DIRTY ordering that. I hide it. But I love it.

Please don't judge me.

MissPenteuth · 30/07/2011 18:03

Mmm, chippy (chippie?) sauce. I miss Edinburgh :(

NettoSuperstar · 30/07/2011 18:09

I had battered wbite pudding earlier and DD had chips.
I do love a bit of ponce on occasion but not when the chippy is involved.

bananamam · 30/07/2011 18:09

I love Edinburgh chippy sauce!! Scotland's east coast make the BEST fish and chips though. I have lived in London,Glasgow, Edinburgh, Manchester to name a few places and nowhere does chips like a wee Coastal town I know!

Wrapped in the usual paper BUT then wrapped in newspaper on the outside...YUM!!!!
