got it sussed. sprinkle a jar of schwartz ceyenne and chilli pepper over lawn or garden, it works. been poo free for a couple of months now.

... and someone, near you, is having to subject their cats to courses of steroids to help them to cope with their exposure to chilli. Yes, it works for you, but as a owner of cats I wouldn't bloody appreciate it.

Sorry G1inger, but that is your choice for having cats that shit in other people's gardens. I certainly don't appreciate my DD inadvertently squishing her hands in some cat poo.

I didn't really appreciate having to wash my floor.and.carpet tonight after DD trailed cat shit through my house tonight after a cat had done It's business in her bark play area.and covered it over so.she couldn't see it. Thanks for.the tip.

How does it work after it's rained once or twice? And what about your children or other pets, did it bother them?

G1nger really? Why would they need steroids because of the chilli pepper? What does it do to them?

You know, when I joined MN I really did believe it was a parenting site.

In the short time ive been here, ive realised that in reality, its a cat shit vs dog shit who is the worst and what can we do about it site.

I wonder what people will have to get nagry about if all pet owners really do follow your advice and keep them indoors.

It's harmful???? Oh I feel awful now. I have done the cayenne thing in ghe past, as I assumed they hated the smell and kept away, was just fed up of clearing my lawn everyday for my toddler when I was pg, and supposed to keep away from faeces.

Sets off allergic reactions- Tongue swelling in the one cat and skin problems in a previous cat. One of my two current cats now also vomits a lot, which appears to be his standard response to any issues. The steroids are to address their immune responses in some way. Both of my cats poo in my garden, although I don't really know why.

I had a child rolling in it this week in the garden... was all over her jumper, down her shorts, legs... 1 stinky little 1 year old I tell ya.

Not sure why someone else's animal is legally allowed to poo on my property.

I think all cat owners should open their loos to members of the public in return for their cats using other people's gardens as their litter tray (the cats, not the owners).

That would solve the problem of not enough public toilets.

Thanks for the tip... I've tried everything to stop my neighbours cat pooing in my garden... Someone told me to half fill a large plastic bottle with water and leave on the garden. I've been cat poo free for a few days now..

Have to say the next step was going to be a water pistol! If owners can't stop their cats pooing in other people's garden they should keep them indoors IMO.

Ginger appreciate not wanting to harm another living creature but when you say about potientially harming your cat, what about all the nasty, harmful stuff in your cat's poo, shouldn't cat owners take that into consideration too?

OK I'll stop ranting now.. a pet (haha) hate of mine!

the other thing that works is a highpower jet of water from hosepipe to cat. But obviously you have to catch them in your garden....

But it is fun when you do Smile

Note to furry lovers: water does not harm cats.

I bought a can of stuff from homebase...I think it has pepper in it.

I've got 2 cats who used to be house cats and used a litter box when we lived in a flat, when we moved to a house, I started letting them out and they stopped using their litter box (their choice), presumably favouring someone's garden.
However, I don't see why I should keep my cats indoors and limit their quality of life when other neighbourhood cats come into my garden to shit.
Those electronic cat scarers are excellent, have had no problems since I got one.
My view is your garden, your problem, if you don't like it use a repellant. Cats have as much right to be out and about as we do.

It's cruel to keep cats indoors. My kittens were literally climbing the doorframes in frustration before I could let them outside. I guess the alternative is to just not own them? I appreciate this is an emotive issue, but let's try to be reasonable... Perhaps all cat owners should be encouraged to start the cats off in their own garden (emptying bits of the litter tray out there after initial periods spent inside). That and the fact that my male cat is neutered might possibly be why they do it all in my garden. Cats seem to be creatures of habit...

As much as I like cats....I don't really want to find a cat poo when I am digging in my flower bed!!!!

So any deterrant is good....and that special stuff you can buy works a treat. Have seen no visitors since!

Why should I have cat poo in my garden, its gross esp as they seem to bury it so I've stuck my hand in it on several occassions when gardening. We put pepper powder down, got it from the garden centre, its not harmful. We also use it to stop my dog digging in certain areas, he sneezes and then doesn't go near it.

G1nger - you would complain if I didnt pick up my dog's poo surely?

ddubs - cats can be trained to use a litter tray...

I think this is one of those cat lovers versus cat haters debates. FACT cats aren't like dogs you can't determine where they are going to crap - they don't tend to do it in there own territory so this is why they go elsewhere ( if they don't use a litter tray) I know my cats probably do their business next door and next doors cat used to do it my garden - that's life. I fall in to the cat lover brigade so just accept it as part of the deal. I did recently get a puppy though and that seems to have stopped anything from coming in my garden ( including my cats! ) so maybe the answer is to get a dog ! ;)
