Glad I read this thanks for the tip! I'm fed bloody up of dirty cat poo in my back garden! It stinks and I'm sick of picking up other peoples pet crap! Tried everything but the buggers insist on crapping in my garden! I have to constantly watch my DD who is 3 when she is the garden incase she stumbles across it!

I have to fully loaded pump action water guns in my garden and the cats get a good old soaking if I catch them!!!

Don't get me wrong, I like cats! But I don't want them crapping in my garden!

Will def be trying this tip. Thanks OP!

Or get a cat. We never had problems with cat poo in our garden until our beloved 18 year old cat died. (Which obviously means that she was pooing in someone else's garden.)

It's a real problem now though. But I would never do anything that could potentially harm them.

I don't really care if cats can or can't be trained to poo in a litter tray, that's the cat owners problem, not mine! Why should I have to solve the problem for the cat owner. Why should I also have to spend my hard earned cash on repellants?

catwhiskers10 you say I don't see why I should keep my cats indoors and limit their quality of life when other neighbourhood cats come into my garden to shit. that is just plain stupid comment, just because someone does it to you, doens't mean it's ok for you to let your animal do it to everyone else, what about the neighbours who don't have cats?

and My view is your garden, your problem just boils my pi*s!! So if it's my garden you wouldn't have a problem with me taking a catapult to your cat who happens to be in my garden then? No, thought you might get a little upset about that.. Put yourself in the garden owners position - i'm sure you wouldn't be at all pleased if their pets, dogs, kids, adults started shitting in your garden?

The cats now sit on my shed looking disdainfully at my dog while he goes beserk trying to scare them off. Quite entertaining really.

If it's cruel to keep cat's indoors, and that you can't stop them shitting in other people's gardens, then...don't have cats?

Just a thought.

Please don't do this. A spray of water or a bucket if you must. Why would you want to deliberately harm an animal.

Gah! I hate finding cat poo in our garden, we have a veg patch which makes it worse as we had to chuck loads of veg last year because cats had crapped on it. We got some cat and dog repellant from wilkos, and it smells REALLY strongly of garlic, my DP tested it at his mums house over her veg patch to stop their puppy going and eating the lettuces, and it didn't work. He loved it and was licking it up from where it was sprinkled. It seems to work on cats though, you just have to do it late at night so the neighbours don't know where the incredibly strong garlic smell is coming from :o

Oh yes bucket of water stood outside the door ready to chuck at marauding cats works as well but again you have to catch them at it. If you are vigilant though you only have to get them once, they never return!

I am an animal lover believe it or not.

But cats don't understand that it's your garden.

And the reason it's not illegal for other people's cats to crap in gardens is because they are not like dogs, they are independent animals who don't train well.

Fair enough it can be a pain having cats crap in your garden, but does that really make it okay to potentially harm them because of that? After all, 2 wrongs do not make a right.

Next door to us have just got two cats.We have a dog buy they still come in the garden .The number of song birds in the garden has decreased dramatically and they have raided a couple of nests leaving the dead birds around,I know it was the cats because I saw them at one nest. They also caught baby rabbits under next doors shed and keep chasing them round the garden with the baby rabbits squealing ,watched them catch one and drag it into the house.

I have never had a cat but quite liked them ,this has put me right off, found one of them on top of my henhouse eying my pekins

But cat OWNERS understand that it's your garden, but still go ahead and feed and house an animal that they know will shit in your garden.

How is doing something that you know will result in a particular outcome differ from doing it yourself?

Unless you think it's ok to go and crap in your neighbours garden yourself, don't let your cats do so.

flippingebay as I said, I've had the problem myself of someone elses cats coming into my garden and it really annoyed me so I bought a cat scarer. I don't expect their cats to be kept indoors, I had a problem and I dealt with it.
I wouldn't mind if my neighbours took action against my cats going into their garden in a humane way (hosepipe, water pistol, pepper etc).
I would have a problem with neighbours or their kids started shitting in my garden as they can be controlled, cats can't (except by keeping them indoors which I don't want to do)
If I saw my cats shitting in a neighbours garden, I would apologise and lift it but as they are out most of the time, I don't know where they go.

But cat owners can't exactly keep their cats on leads 24/7 can they?

And what about ferrell cats, foxes and other stray animals? Should someone be containing them? It is the animals world to live in as well, not just ours.

i have the solution !, i shall follow bigpuss with a carrier bag and some air freshener wherever he may go as i am a responsible pet owner
or maybe i can attach said bag to cats bottom?
i'll keep working on it methinks

catwhisker10 - If cat's can't be controlled, your moral choices are to not have them or to keep them indoors.

Otherwise you are saying that your right to have cat's that live outdoors is more important than everyone elses right not to have your cat shit in their garden.

StrawberryMewMew - You aren't responsible for the strays etc. You are responsible for your cat.

catchafallingstar · 03/06/2011 12:49

sonic cat deterrent is your answer folks.

and keep changing its position in your garden to the cats don't become used to it and try to avoid its beam (which is wide anyway).

Works very well for me.

Have tried all sorts of chilli powder, citrus peels, pellets etc. They all wear off in the rain.

But it's not a persons right to have cats that live outdoors, if the cat living is in a situation where it can get out then it is the cats right!

Or are you saying that your right to have a cat shit free garden is more important than their right to be able to live without being confined to live indoors their whole life?

I have no problem with people using water pistols or similar to stop my cat pooing in their garden. Our cat is kept indoors between 6pm and 8am and so we still have plenty of birds in our garden (and much less chance of her being run over). Yes, it's a bit annoying when other cats poo next to my front door, but hey, there are more important things to get in a tizz about.

Flippingebay · 03/06/2011 12:55

PregolaLola or maybe you could keep it indoors or stop it crapping in other people's garden, if that's not possible then maybe you shouldn't have cats? As I've said before, it's not my responsibility to tell the cat owner what they can do or how to solve this problem.

I take responsibility to make sure my pets, husband, kids, myself don't crap or otherwise annoy my neighbours, why do some cat owners think it's ok to let their pet, that is their responsibility, leave crap for other people to clear up?

I honestly don't blame the cat owners for the cat poo I've encountered in my garden.

Cat's are independent creatures and have to go for a wander and do whatever cats do on their adventures...

You can't keep them indoors...they are explorers!

HOWEVER - it is my right...to put a deterrant down so that they don't shit in my flower bed....

and if I had a cat of my own...I would still do the same!

It's definitely NOT about cat likers v cat haters....
What a RIDICULOUS suggestion!

Yes that's exactly what I'm saying! I don't own a cat so I have a right to live with a cat shit free garden...

StrawberryMewMew - If you didn't have the cat the issue would not arise. Let's say cats can't be kept indoors (though I know many cat owners who would disagree).

Then it's a straight cat/no cat issue.

If you have a cat, then assuming cats range over, say, 200 meters and taking where I live as a bench mark, then if you have a cat then 20+ houses will have your cats shit in them.

So if you decide to have a cat you are saying:-
a) I think it's ok for my actions to result in my neighbours gardens having shit in them
b) My pleasure in having a cat is more important than 60 peoples pain in having shit in their garden.
