Where are all the female singers/musicians who ROCK??

I've been listening to Kerrang on the radio on and off for a bit now, and I realised today that I don't think I've ever heard them play a female singer/group, and can't think of any current ones.

Harking back to the 70/80s and Joan Jett/Heart/Suzi Quattros music didn't fill me with a whole lotta love for them, and Courtney Love was an embarrassment in the 90's.

Is it a mostly macho genre and any women entering it have to play on their bodies to get anywhere (same as most music then?).

Or do women just have better things to do so don't even try to improve on the perfection that is Metallica? Grin

I don't know. Care to join me in a spot of head banging whilst we think about this? Grin

Crawling · 01/05/2011 20:50

Paramore, pretty recklace I cant think of much more but that is because I havent had time to watch lately.

happymole · 01/05/2011 20:53

I have Hole's Live Though This and I liked it. Hate Courtney Love though.

The Distillers are okay. Has been a few years since i listened to them though.

I was more of an arse wriggler than headbanger worra, put off from all the pain of a stiff neck suffered the next day by just about everyone I knew Grin

'Head like a hole, black as your soul, I'd rather die than give you control...' (I wanna dance now! Grin)

Julie Christmas of Made Out Of Babies/Battle Of Mice. She fucking rocks.

PeterSpanswick · 01/05/2011 21:15

Shirley Manson was my hero. Followed by Skin from Skunk Anansie.

worraliberty · 01/05/2011 21:16

I have fond memories of Saturday and Sunday mornings with a wobbly neck from the nights before Blush

Perhaps that's where my last few remaining brain cells went Grin

aStarInStrangeways · 01/05/2011 21:16

Shirley Manson is about as rock as my slippers.

PeterSpanswick · 01/05/2011 21:18

So am I these days!

southeastastra · 01/05/2011 21:19

where are the young men who rock?

though i saw a gang of long haird young blokes the other day, who didn't style their hair at all!

Grin
CMOTdibbler · 01/05/2011 21:20

Skin from Skunk Anansie - now theres a woman who really rocks

MakeEndsMeet · 01/05/2011 21:20

Lacuna Coil, Nightwish, Within Temptation are a few female fronted metal bands Smile

squeakytoy · 01/05/2011 21:21

Hayley from Paramour is the only one I can really think of at the moment. There really are not lot of women who are in top of rock music at the moment.

Rhianna duetted with Slash on his new album and did a very good job of it though.

southeastastra · 01/05/2011 21:22

i think kate bush rocks though and wish she'd make another album

squeakytoy · 01/05/2011 21:25

Kate is a bit past rocking now though!!!

I remember growing up and Girlschool were our heroes (heroines?) and we idolised them.

I thought I should feel old as that was the 80's, but the lead singer of Green Day is the same age as me, so I dont give a toss now, and I love Green Day!

bethelbeth · 01/05/2011 21:25

Tairrie B of My Ruin
Tobey Torres of Snake River Conspiracy
Cristina Scabbia from Lacuna Coil
Hayley Williams of Paramor
The awesome indie chick of Pomplamousse
Brody Dalle

To be fair though- the music scene in general appears to have veered towards indie and club music- there's very few recent rock bands that are any good with males or females!

AgentZigzag · 01/05/2011 21:26

I've liked (I was going to say 'a bit of Kate Bush in my time' but that's not what I meant Grin) Kate Bushs music, too busy enjoying her family at the min isn't she?

I heard on the radio somewhere saying she'd love to do another album, it'd be an interesting listen.

AgentZigzag · 01/05/2011 21:29

'there's very few recent rock bands that are any good with males or females!'

Maybe this generations youngsters are just big girls blouses and haven't got a clue how to Rock?

Nothing to rebel against, see? Grin

Chrissie Hynde rocked. I so wanted to be Chrissie.

anonacfr · 01/05/2011 21:31

Kim Gordon- Sonic Youth. Still rocking after all these years.

squeakytoy · 01/05/2011 21:32

The first live gig I ever went to was Toyah in 1980, and she was brilliant.

I then went to see Hazel O'Connor in 82, and have loved her music ever since. She is still performing and can still rock it very well!. For anyone who remembers Breaking Glass, it is now 30 years old and she has done an anniversary tour in the last few months.

Joan Jett supported Green Day last year, and she wasnt too bad either.

bethelbeth · 01/05/2011 21:32

Try telling that to the parents of teenagers lol.

Rock is just not very trendy at the moment.

Hardcore is (hxc) depending on where in the country you are....that's probably the most common alternative music scene that isn't in the charts at the moment. Emo's died a couple of years ago.....

It's only a matter of time!!

ThatVikRinA22 · 01/05/2011 21:37

watched pj harvey on jools holland and then watched her debut performance from 1993 (if you go on website you can watch it)

she rocks.

squeakytoy · 01/05/2011 21:38

I dont think rock has been really trendy for a few years now.

Me and my husband are both rock fans though, and his ex wife too, so the kids have grown up listening to Led Zep, AC/DC, Chilli's, Pink Floyd, etc, and all three of them are into the same genre as us now. It is great going to concerts because they always want to come with us.

I can listen to all types of music, but rock will always be my home.
