Where are all the female singers/musicians who ROCK??

I've been listening to Kerrang on the radio on and off for a bit now, and I realised today that I don't think I've ever heard them play a female singer/group, and can't think of any current ones.

Harking back to the 70/80s and Joan Jett/Heart/Suzi Quattros music didn't fill me with a whole lotta love for them, and Courtney Love was an embarrassment in the 90's.

Is it a mostly macho genre and any women entering it have to play on their bodies to get anywhere (same as most music then?).

Or do women just have better things to do so don't even try to improve on the perfection that is Metallica? Grin

They're bringing out a film, should be interesting Grin

Ooh ooh ooh! Merrill Garbus of Tune-Yards! (Live clip here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=QcmJnNYAkFI&feature=related ) She was my gig of the year for me last year - can't wait to see her again in June!

pinkstinks · 01/05/2011 23:11

this is true, not a fan of tarja's solo stuff, and not a fan of her replacement frontwoman...

Also, I think gwen stefani rocks... Blush but back in the ska/raggae No Doubt days - and they are currently recording a new album excited!

Tyr · 01/05/2011 23:11

There is a Japanese all-girl band called Gallhammer who might satisfy the OP.

I would have thought that Kerrang would play them, unless they are too extreme.

MakeEndsMeet · 01/05/2011 23:15

If No Doubt bring out an album like they're old stuff I would definitely get it, if you want more extreme stuff then Scuzz is better Smile

squeakytoy · 01/05/2011 23:16

Here is another I forgot . Pink. Her stuff is very good.

pinkstinks · 01/05/2011 23:20

I am hoping the album is more like old school no doubt, I even prefer pre-rock steady days, songs like BND and oi to the world!

Pink live is one of the most amazing performers!

MakeEndsMeet · 01/05/2011 23:23

Just a girl is my favourite No Doubt song! It's great to dance along to Grin

ChateauRouge · 01/05/2011 23:25

What about Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs?
PJ Harvey?

Both fantastic live too.

bethelbeth · 01/05/2011 23:27

Ahem... I don't know if I'll forgive myself for overlooking the amazing Siouxsie Sioux.

What was I thinking!!!?

pinkstinks · 01/05/2011 23:31

i have had "what's up" by the 4 non blondes stuck in my head all day! Linda Perry, what a voice!

PainSnail · 01/05/2011 23:51

What about the Riot Grrl movement? What about Kathleen Hanna (Bikini Kill, Le Tigre), and Sleater Kinney and Bratmobile and Bangs?

No? Then how about PJ Harvey or Jemina Pearl or Amelia Fletcher or Chrissie Hynde or Debbie Harry or Vivian Girls?

These women may never appear on Kerrang, but that makes them no less talented, and no less rock and roll than any man.

bethelbeth · 01/05/2011 23:54

They are probably all on kerrang radio... I haven't read the magazine in at least 8 years but they were quite good for doing retrospectives. Too much modern rubbish for me though!

squeakytoy · 01/05/2011 23:54

PJ, Chrissie and Debbie have all had a mention, and I have seen them all on Kerrang at some point, if only in the golden oldies sections.

pinkstinks · 02/05/2011 00:07

Aah Le tigre, that takes me back
listens to deceptacon.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 02/05/2011 00:21

Golden oldies.... Humph!

ninah · 02/05/2011 00:28

what about florence?

citybranch · 02/05/2011 02:24

I was the bass player in Sugarcoma..... I'm on phone so can't link, but you can check youtube.

citybranch · 02/05/2011 02:28

We did hit number 2 on the kerrang video chart back in 2001 (after marilyn manson 'tainted love'). Also single of the week in Kerrang and Melody Maker. But we were 16-19 years old, and that did show musically!

iscream · 02/05/2011 03:40
She is married to Derek Trucks who equally good.
iscream · 02/05/2011 04:16

Also
Chrissie Hynde
Patti Smith
Pink

and Carol is still going strong, here she is in 2005, same song, she is not a spring chicken, but she still has it! [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lr-tcgLHy_I 2005}} Sheryl Crow Lot's more, but I lean more towards southern blues than rock. Having trouble linking that last one, just youtube Bonnie Raitt "Pride & Joy"
EmmaBemma · 02/05/2011 06:10

Another vote for Karen O - she immediately sprang to mind. Fever To Tell is a brilliant album if you want to listen. And for Amanda Palmer and PJ Harvey. Kim Deal, if no-one's mentioned her yet - of Pixies and Breeders fame.

MissBetsyTrotwood · 02/05/2011 07:19

Try the femmes from the band Invasion. It's heavy. They rock.

And yes, Emma, Kim Deal.

MakeEndsMeet · 02/05/2011 10:08

citybranch I love the britney sprears cover Grin

MakeEndsMeet · 02/05/2011 10:10
