Where are all the female singers/musicians who ROCK??

I've been listening to Kerrang on the radio on and off for a bit now, and I realised today that I don't think I've ever heard them play a female singer/group, and can't think of any current ones.

Harking back to the 70/80s and Joan Jett/Heart/Suzi Quattros music didn't fill me with a whole lotta love for them, and Courtney Love was an embarrassment in the 90's.

Is it a mostly macho genre and any women entering it have to play on their bodies to get anywhere (same as most music then?).

Or do women just have better things to do so don't even try to improve on the perfection that is Metallica? Grin

dd was asking me about this the other day, why are they all men? I don't know. I was thinking too as we drove back from France through Germany to the Czech Republic, that a lot of German music is breathy females singing ballads with peculiar intonation but it doesn't rock.

I wonder why that is. Why people like it.

ZZZenAgain · 02/05/2011 10:15

es ist vorbei

this kind of thing but she doesn't do the peculiar intonation.

GingerWrath · 02/05/2011 10:15

Old school rock chick here....(think Motley Crue, Poison, Faster Pussycat..although have now converted to the Mighty 'Tallica and Slipknot)....

Metal has always been male dominated but saying that, Fergie features on Slash's song 'Beautiful Dangerous' and she actually sounds pretty rock like.

I used to be a HUGE fan of Kittie...
Isnt Will Smith's wife the front of a metal band?

Adair · 02/05/2011 12:02

Elastica (indie rather than rock)
Sleater-Kinney (ditto?)
Kristeen Young

dd (5) loves all of these. She def prefers music with female vocalists (and Plan B for some reason). ds (2) just asks for Bob the Builder ...

The Au Pairs (showing my age there) are fantastic. I have been trying to buy them on CD for years now.

Anyone remember Ruth Lorenzo, Spanish contestant on X Factor? She could rock.

CarefulWithThatAxeEugene · 02/05/2011 12:59

oops - links didn't work

Can't believe there are only 2 mentions of Courtney Love and both of those negative! She's amazing, music and lyrics, and her interviews are hilarious.

happymole · 02/05/2011 13:05

I was negative about Courtney Love, I think she is pretty vile.

I did say though, that i loved her band Hole.

Vallhala · 02/05/2011 13:50

Maria Daines rocks!

She's also a lovely lady and a dedicated animal rescuer too. :)
