"I was feeling down earlier so I dipped my Muslim friend in bleach,

I thought I'd try to lighten Mahmood..."

I think I might hit the delete button. Jury please!

OP posts:
Okonomiyaki · 13/04/2011 06:30

Yup, racist and not funny.

seeker · 13/04/2011 06:31

Why do you nned to ask? Unfriend. And I suggest you get your post deleted too. Not something anyone wants to read.

purplerabbitofinle · 13/04/2011 06:34

Ok, so do I report them too? Comment on the status and challenge it?

Apologies, seeker. I didn't anticipate that level of offense taken

OP posts:
seeker · 13/04/2011 06:42

I haven't taken offence. I just think that reposting something like this just spreads it about even more. There can be no doubt that it's racist - no jury required!

If it was me, incidentally, I would challenge the "friend" as well.

HecateQueenOfTheNight · 13/04/2011 06:43

Yes. Very offensive.

Personally, I'd say don't delete it. Can't pretend this sort of stuff doesn't exist and it's always good to remind yourself there are utter twats in the world.

Lest we forget, and all that...

gorionine · 13/04/2011 07:00

Hecate , I see what you mean but I would delete anyway, simply because I refuse to be associated with that sort or "humour". If I saw that on a friends wall (like they had got this from friend and kept it) I would have the nagging feeling that if they did not delete it it must be because they found it funny.

HecateQueenOfTheNight · 13/04/2011 07:03

I see your point, but I think that two hundred posts saying "What a twatty thing" "how disgusting" "how stupid" etc etc is a far more effective teacher than lifting up the rug at MNHQ and shoving an offensive thread or post under it.

My god, that rug Shock well, by now MNHQ must be having trouble keeping the mountain climbers away Grin

purplerabbitofinle · 13/04/2011 07:04

It's not a person I know well in RL, btw - friend of a friend with a common interest. Quite young which is why I'm inclined to challenge - the person is likely to not know better iyswim

I'm also worried that 2 people had "liked" it Shock

OP posts:
purplerabbitofinle · 13/04/2011 07:06

I've commented:

"Really not a cool thing to be joking about, dude"

And will see what kind of response I get...

OP posts:
gorionine · 13/04/2011 07:15

True Hecate, I did not think about commenting [still asleep emoticon], yes, maybe something like "you could shorten your status by just saying 'I am a racist'!" would work.

I was going to say how silly of OP to ask but then it did open intersting ways of dealing with it other than just ignoring/deleting so thanks OP and thanks Hecate!

purplerabbitofinle · 13/04/2011 07:19

gorionine, that's what I was wondering - i work with adults with learning disabilities and am in a mixed race relationship so I prefer to challenge or explain where I can. I kind of feel like I need an MN Chorus behind me as backup on this one Wink

OP posts:
seeker · 13/04/2011 07:22

I am incredibly old and po faced, but I would have been much more direct in my response, purplerabbit.

seeker · 13/04/2011 07:24

And, actually, thinking about it, the fact that the person is young means they have even less excuse. I might be more inclined to give the benefit of the doubt to an over 70!

purplerabbitofinle · 13/04/2011 07:25

What I want to say is

"Just to simplify for the hard of thinking, this status is racist, offensive and sickening in the extreme and reflects those qualities onto the person who posted it"

I'm furious, by the way, and have a habit of getting very wordy when i am - I have to leave for work in 10 minutes and want to remain calm. I also don't want to lose the moral highground. This person is young, and may still be at school (friend of a friend on FB with a common interest) so I'm treading warily. For now

Wink

ShockShock vile. and if "friend" is that young, maybe it would be worth spelling out that they are joking about potential GBH.

TryLikingClarity · 13/04/2011 07:44

Young or not, I think joking about dipping any human in bleach is disgusting!

YANBU.

Delete your FB account while you're there.

moogster1a · 13/04/2011 08:07

Well I think it's quite funny!

HecateQueenOfTheNight · 13/04/2011 08:13

Sadly, many people will. They will look no further than the play on words.

Personally, I see a) the ignorant view of muslims as a race - a non-white race. b) a subtext that white skin is good c) the idea of dipping a human being in bleach

Goblinchild · 13/04/2011 08:13

Make a comment on the post showing your disapproval for their racism.
If they are young, they may not have any friends mature enough, or well taught enough to see how inappropriate it is.
Coming to MN to fuss is pointless, tell them.

SilentBob · 13/04/2011 08:20

I culled someone on FB and IRL over a similar thing. I also culled those who I had on my FB who replied positively or 'liked' his status. Before said cull, however, I commented. I would have given my right arm to see their racist little faces when they saw a comment made by English first name Asian surname on that particular status. Think before you post, people, think before you post! Grin

SilentBob · 13/04/2011 08:21

Oops, didn't mean to bold, meant to "". Ah well, I'm all about the emphasis lol

catchmeifyoucan · 13/04/2011 08:54

Muslims are not a race. A creed maybe, but not a race.

I think I must know you in RL... My 'friend' just wrote that... Followed by this;

"Why can't two Chinese people have a baby? Because 2 Wongs don't make a White."

Hmm
purplerabbitofinle · 13/04/2011 09:18

I've pounted out its racist and offensive as the person also commented.

I can't delete fb all the pics of the blanket for edgar are on there!
