ElephantsAndMiasmas · 16/11/2010 12:49

Post an AIBU from the point of view of a fictional character (from novels/nursery rhymes/plays etc) and everyone tries to guess the book and/or the character.

Everyone welcome to play/time-waste as much or as little as they please :)

AIBU to be protective of my DD?

...And that's a book-AIBU before you start, you cheeky bunch :)

Do you have something to hide, Elephants?

Unrulysun · 11/01/2011 17:54

Or are you too hideous to look upon?

Aubergines are your other veggie friend IME. Jamie steams them (I know!) and dresses them with Japanesey type stuff. Utterly virtuous and definitely groffleable.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 11/01/2011 19:39

...Nothing to hide exactly. That's hardly kind, unruly, but I'm not known for my good looks...

at aubergines. Hate em. Hate em.

Oh Elephants I had thought you a person of some taste and distinction :(

are you really going to have the surgery? Is there a particular part you'll get done?

TreacleOfComfortAndJoy · 11/01/2011 21:18

another veggie over here! Mmmm, lentils and goats cheese...

Well done, Moomin; I was accused of his murderer but thankfully this new chap sorted all that out! Have a monocle for your prize.

CJ, which Kate Atkinson was yours? I love those I've read but I know there are several I've yet to get round to.

MCP everyone...

Treacle, my KA was the latest one - Started Early, Took My Dog. I loved it. I think she's getting better and better - her literary crime genre is inspired.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 12/01/2011 14:07

To think CJ, you'd wandered into a nest of vegetarians, fell beasts one and all. :)

My favourite Kate Atkinson is still Human Croquet, I think. Although haven't read it for ages since it was kidnapped "borrowed". Behind the Scenes is just as good, actually. I got to write about some of those at uni, instead of Charlie Dickens.

What was yours, Treacle?

...Yes, I hardly know where to start! But will concentrate on this one area for now, I'm sure I've got a far better chance of bagging my man if I undergo this procedure...

OP posts:
TreacleOfComfortAndJoy · 12/01/2011 14:29

Elephants, is it your nose that's the problem? And are you doing it for your estranged husband?

I must read the latest KA books - Human Croquet's my favourite too, so far, although I really enjoyed the first of her 'crime' novels.

I was Harriet Vane from Have His Carcase, which is one of Dorothy Sayer's Lord Peter Wimsey books. My father found a whole stash of them in his book lock-up (the tottering pile to end all tottering piles) so I was reading steadily through them all through Christmas.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 12/01/2011 15:03

That sounds like a wonderful place. :)

...It's not my nose, and I'm not married yet. Hoping to be though, this chap is on the hunt for a bride. If only I didn't have sibling rivalry to worry about...

OP posts:
CJCregg · 12/01/2011 15:12

Ooh, Elephants, you wouldn't be considering making your feet smaller, would you?

Should I read Human Croquet again, I wonder? I seem to remember finding it really disappointing, but this was years ago when it first came out and I think I was expecting it to be another Behind the Scenes.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 12/01/2011 15:26

I think the ending of HC was a bit disappointing, but felt similar about the end of Behind the Scenes. All the woods stuff, and the flashbacks in time, were brilliant. I sometimes think KA should just stop dead mid-story - actually, that's sort of what she does now, isn't it?

...Well, just a little off the heel? Nothing dramatic...

OP posts:
CJCregg · 12/01/2011 15:43

Go for it - you'll never fit into that slipper otherwise, and that bitch half-sister of yours will nab the cool rich guy ...

I think I will reread HQ. Yes, she does wander off sometimes. The ending of BTSATM was a bit disappointing but worth it because the rest was so bloody good. But SO tight-knit, I agree, I think she runs out of steam.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 12/01/2011 16:04

But then I felt the same about Cold Comfort Farm. The way Flora just slips off and everything is suddenly over with...Maybe it's just that with such a great group of characters the author hardly knows how to finish with them. So tends to go "and they all got eaten by a giant maggot/married each other and lived happily ever after/woke up and it was all a dream".

...Thanks, think I will. Sure it won't hurt a bit. OWWWWW. Ah well, it will be worth it allegedly to marry the Prince!

Well done, have a slightly used pumpkin and a fairy godmother (gin not supplied) as a prize.

AIBU to wish I was a peasant?

OP posts:
Unrulysun · 12/01/2011 18:20

Elephants you almost certainly ABU. I am a peasant and it ain't all it's cracked up to be sitting here in this big pile of horseshit waiting to be spat at by a lord

Why the wanting?

AIBU to think that some people just don't want to do things in the right way?

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 12/01/2011 18:25

Well all the people I know of my own age are peasants, and they seem to be having far more fun than me. And no embroidery to do.

OP posts:
ElephantsAndMiasmas · 12/01/2011 18:26

(Am arfing at "I am a peasant and it ain't all it's cracked up to be" - how bloody true :o)

AIBU to wonder if I can trust her?

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 15/01/2011 12:20

Is she the flirtatious type Treacle?

OP posts:
TreacleOfComfortAndJoy · 15/01/2011 12:54

Are you a princess, then?

...I don't think so - not that it matters, I'm more concerned with her ability to keep a secret...

Unrulysun · 16/01/2011 15:02

Ahem!

I am here on the raft - albeit weak from a January of rainswept lentil eating.

YA almost certainly NBU Treacle - people can keep secrets like wasps can do calligraphy. Is it an important secret? Have you already confided? Do tell

TreacleOfComfortAndJoy · 17/01/2011 15:54

Ah, Unruly! Excellent. Now we are three in a boat.

...it's not my secret as such, more a secret organisation...

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 18/01/2011 10:39

Ello ello ello.

...No I'm not a princess, but I am apparently too noble to work outside. Instead I have to do this endless sewing and listening to my mother telling me off for being unladylike. And now my father wants to marry me off...

Treacle - are you hoping to take back the kingdom?
