to be bored with myself and to want to become a Jilly Cooper character for the winter?

I want to sit in front of a fire of apple logs, wearing only a Dark Blue towel.

I want a rosy-cheeked face which I have to tone down with green foundation, instead of looking like a corpse unless I put on loads of blusher.

I want to drink three quarters of a bottle of Moet before doing ANYTHING. (Including: getting up in the morning or taking an important exam.)

I want an Absolutely Filthy Mini instead of a people carrier.

I want DH to do thumb exercises so that the ball of his thumb becomes pudgy because apparently that's sexy or something Hmm.

I want to lose loads and loads of weight every time I am a bit sad about something, so that everyone who thought I was a minger before is suddenly struck by my beauty, instead of eating cakes to cheer myself up and getting fatter.

AIBU?

colourme scurf! Swiped! Bramble-torn legs!

I'm going to dawdle down to the village shop but suspect I will be waylaid by the haunting oboe played by an inexplicably angry-looking scruffy beauty who has just moved in.

I expect my rescue greyhound will shove her printed nose into his muscular denim thigh.

Spot of joyful shagging, quick large vodka from chipped po and should still make the school run.

charleslingus · 17/09/2013 14:03

Balloon slayer, I saw that doc and also the film 'rush' in the cinema the other day which was also based on James hunt and lauders rivalry. If I remember rightly in the film hunts character was exactly how I imagine rcb and it was all very glamorous. He is the only person I can think of who vaguely resembles.

Though my memory is a little clouded as I had spent all day drinking champagne with my girlfriends and just about remembered to totter along to meet dh for the film. Jilly was such an influence growing up!

Just want to light the fire and settle down with rivals, but sadly the treasure (that I don't have) has neglected to have the bloody chimneys swept...

SuperiorCat · 17/09/2013 14:30

I much prefer the idea of James Hunt being the inspiration for RCB rather than Andrew Parker-Bowles

MarmaladeTwatkins · 17/09/2013 15:05

EUGHEUGH

Andrew Parker Bowles.

My vagina would seal itself shut if ever came towards me in THAT way.

:(

squoosh · 17/09/2013 15:21

Is Riders the best JC to start with?

MarmaladeTwatkins · 17/09/2013 15:48

I started with The Man Who Made Husbands Jealous and worked back, but yes, start with Riders.

:)

SuperiorCat · 17/09/2013 16:00

Yes squoosh Riders is the first one and sets the scene, but Rivals and Polo are IMO slightly better all downhill after that

squoosh · 17/09/2013 16:03

Thanks!

Can't wait to delve into the world of posh shaggy cads. I live in Glasgow though so for my sake I hope I don’t develop an unquenchable thirst for the Ruperts of this world, cos they don’t live round here!

MarmaladeTwatkins · 17/09/2013 16:12

I am so jealous Envy

I wish I had a 'delete file' facility on my brain which allowed me to delete knowledge of books I've read. I'll never get that feeling of reading a Jilly for the first time ever again :(

Enjoy yourself, squoosh. :)

MonkeyGoneToHeaven · 17/09/2013 16:29

Interesting about James Hunt. This could be Rupert, Billy and Janey here - photo taken by Helen of the laquered bush, whilst tight at a party.

BalloonSlayer · 17/09/2013 16:37

Grin at the photo

Actually having just gone back through the thread someone else mentioned James Hunt when the thread originally started.

Apparently JH was well-known for ignoring dress codes as well and often turned up to functions without any shoes on.

Rupert would probably call him a "little suburban creep" though.

I blame Jilly entirely for my inner and never expressed sneeriness towards lower middle class foibles such as hyper cleanliness of houses and cars, exaggerated respect towards toffs, and words like serviette and toilet. This is unfortunate as my ILs fit this descriptions entirely.

Have you read Class by JC? Quite dated but hilarious she should definitely update it!

Rivals is probably the best book ever written. I think I said earlier on the thread that my serious mountaineering uncle took this book with him when he climbed K2. The all male ultra masculine team ripped his copy into 3 and each team took one bit. My uncle read it in the wrong order but still loved it. Enjoy the image of hunky men cowering in tents reading JC Grin

I completely agree with the sentiment in your OP. Obviously.

colourmehappytheresasofainhere · 17/09/2013 17:40

I feel Patrick o hara was a much underused character of epic potential... Imagine a greying and terribly powerful playwrite in his forties now, reeling from the premature death of his life partner Cameron cook who was always a petulant cow anyway, in need of a capricious bosom and someone who trembles like a whippet...

BadgersRetreat · 17/09/2013 17:44

my evil husband made me bin all my paperbacks when we emigrated. I lost all my Jillys...

i'm moving house in a week and when done i fully intend to hit Amazon hard to fill up my new bookcase. I've looked in bookshops but they are just too old - you can only get Jump now so i read that, obviously

colourmehappytheresasofainhere · 17/09/2013 17:49

Love rivals love polo love mwmohj. The ones about classical music schools and racehorses all a bit lost on me to be honest. Must get out blue towel, apple logs, fish pie and moet in anticipation of visit from polo player doing a detour on the way home to his frightfully sensible wife. So much to do!

JerseySpud · 17/09/2013 17:50

I never realised whippets trembled so much till i read Jilly Cooper. And i've always fancied Luke

colourmehappytheresasofainhere · 17/09/2013 17:52

Hanging, muscular thighs and the strains of oboe music, sigh...Irresistible

colourmehappytheresasofainhere · 17/09/2013 17:56

Jersey, Luke is well sexy in a dependable wide open honest freckly face kind of way. I'd be there like a shot. But Patrick o hara... My absolute favourite

JerseySpud · 17/09/2013 17:59

Luke or i have to say i have a liking for Lysander too

colourmehappytheresasofainhere · 17/09/2013 18:01

Shoot shag or marry: Luke Lyssander or Patrick o h

Anyone know a formula for working out your Jilly Cooper character name? I feel a bonkbuster namechange coming on but need help.

In the meantime, I'd love pre-Raphaelite curls, creamy skin and a degree in History of Art to help me in my little job in the frame shop.
