to be bored with myself and to want to become a Jilly Cooper character for the winter?

I want to sit in front of a fire of apple logs, wearing only a Dark Blue towel.

I want a rosy-cheeked face which I have to tone down with green foundation, instead of looking like a corpse unless I put on loads of blusher.

I want to drink three quarters of a bottle of Moet before doing ANYTHING. (Including: getting up in the morning or taking an important exam.)

I want an Absolutely Filthy Mini instead of a people carrier.

I want DH to do thumb exercises so that the ball of his thumb becomes pudgy because apparently that's sexy or something Hmm.

I want to lose loads and loads of weight every time I am a bit sad about something, so that everyone who thought I was a minger before is suddenly struck by my beauty, instead of eating cakes to cheer myself up and getting fatter.

AIBU?

Good girl. It's not bad writing and you do get the broader genre but perhaps as someone who's never read JC, trying this on a thread full of JC afficionados was errr...

Incidentally, you could pass as Fiona Walker, who appears to be making an entire career out of mediocre Jilly parodies...

Back to the Great Towel Debate: is the actual colour less important, perhaps, than the intimation that her heroines have far better things to do than continually replenish pristine white ones?

There are more sympathetic intelligent female characters at the younger end of the spectrum - eg Flora, Caitlin, Trixie perhaps. And some of the battleaxes are quite liked eg Cameron.

The persistently dim/wet characters are v annoying (Kitty, Etta). I can just forgive Taggie because she stands up to RCB quite a bit.

Playing with fire indeed LeQueen [stern look]

stubbornstains · 20/10/2010 15:10

(...heaves massive 11 and a half stone bulk to the computer)...

...(sigh..)..and if I was a Jilly Cooper character I'd be able to have screaming matches all the time and it would be OK...

Three screaming matches I've had in the last 8 years- three!- and, believe me, for very good reasons- and I am still regarded in some quarters as an Insane Bitch From Hell. No fair! Obviously, I am insufficiently utterly ravishing to get away with it.

boudoiricca · 20/10/2010 15:12

the fact they're generally "scratchy" suggests a generally lax approach to housekeeping Badger (unless this is all taken care of by a treasure, obv).

Yeah, Jilly was very influential during my teens, (so might say too much so) and I still remember being shocked by Tory heaving her "11 and a half stone" bulk around...

SuePurblybilt · 20/10/2010 15:22

My favourite description of a character, possibly ever in the world ever, is of Lizzie Vereker in Rivals. JC describes her as having been very pretty, with a questing nose like a vole and hair like clematis montana in the winter clambering through a dead tree. That is a compliment I think [hgrin]

stubbornstains · 20/10/2010 15:41

I always suspected Lizzie Vereker was Jilly in disguise.... Maybe Jilly at 40, when Janey Lloyd-Foxe was Jilly at 29?

SuePurblybilt · 20/10/2010 16:10

Possibly. Does JC have a nose like a questing vole I wonder?

This thread has forced me into picking up a Jilly again. Found Appassionata in the book shelf from years ago. Probably fitting as am living in Gloucestershire at the moment, not far from JC herself. Sadly it is not sexy around here and the only mega talented musicians I know are my uncle and aunt who are pensioners.

I snurked when I read Pandora too as I was working at an art gallery in Mayfair at the time. Art dealers are not sexy either, mostly old, overweight or and/or gay and buying and selling paintings is not exciting at all.

I long for a treasure. Sadly, I think it's more likely that I'll become a treasure.

SuePurblybilt · 20/10/2010 18:53

Right, JC experts, clear up something that has been bugging me ( on a low level, I can still function ) for years. Why is Bas Wotisface's bar in Rivals called the Bar Sinister? Why is that funny? Whichever way I say it, it doesn't make me laugh [hgrin]

SarahStratton · 20/10/2010 19:59

Because he's illegitimate and the Bar Sinister is a play on the heraldic term for that. Sinister means the bar is on the left meaning illegitimacy.

Or something along those lines, I cba to google and can't remember any more off the top of my head.

Either way Bas was def one of the more interesting males

SuePurblybilt · 20/10/2010 20:02

I knew he was the result of a polo player fling but I was too fick to see the rest. I have never heard the phrase.

YY to Bas, even with that name. She does give good heartthrob does JC.

BalloonSlayer · 20/10/2010 20:21

Ah but I have just re-read Polo and in that he has a big moustache.

Shock

Now to my mind, only Clark Gable and Tom Selleck have ever looked good with a 'tache.

OP posts:
SuePurblybilt · 20/10/2010 20:25

True enough, you can't romance away a tache. But it does rather suit his image. I never like RCB being blonde but obviously, y'know, I still would.

I think I'm veering between Luke and Dino. I always like the sound of Luke's big hands.
