She came home from first day in Y1 at (Greater London) school yesterday and said "Teacher arksed me"...

ShockShock

My inner pedant is appalled.

DH's reaction is to want us to move "back" to his neck of the woods so she grows up speaking proper, like. Is he over-reacting? Wink

I used to live in Fareham, more so than I did in Pompey.

dolphin13 · 10/09/2010 18:18

dusty I don't have a Pompey accent but think it's probably because I lived in:

Singapore
Somerset
Hampshire
Cumbria
Scotland
Then back here.

Did speak to a Social worker last week who was very surprised that my DD2 says yes not yeh [hmmm]

Why are all these people on here who are clearly local not coming to our meet ups.

dolphin13 · 10/09/2010 18:19

or Hmm even

RolsGirl · 10/09/2010 18:26

I was in a town in Hampshire today. There were some women grouped outside a shopping centre who looked to be between 25-35, all with there kids of various ages (in buggies), all smoking rank fags, all talking loudly about the smack they were just about to buy. The kids were unkempt and sad looking. They all had rubbish, and yet un=mistakably native to the town accents.:)

emmyloulou · 10/09/2010 18:26

I am a noob.

mumbar · 10/09/2010 18:27

jetgirl · 10/09/2010 18:33

This thread is brilliant! I was born in basingstoke and lived in south ham until I was 10. Then moved to southampton, I live in shirley now! DH has the misfortune of working in portsmuff from time to time Grin apparently I don't talk properly - he's from lichfield.

mumbar · 10/09/2010 18:37

Oh I went to Cams left 96!! College 96-99!!!

Meglet · 10/09/2010 18:43

rolsgirl Basingstoke or Andover I'd guess?

ChutesTooNarrow · 10/09/2010 18:47

Well I came in to point out the peculiarity of the Cockerney-West Country hybrid that is the 'Ampshire accent but I see it has already been covered Grin

Can I join in the Southampton love-in please, I used to live in Shirley.

emmyloulou · 10/09/2010 18:51

I went to Highbury college Grin

Karmann · 10/09/2010 18:54

I want to join the Southampton love-in too! Was in Shirley, now in Bitterne Park.

veyron · 10/09/2010 18:57

I live in Southampton too, but I live the 'other side' of the water (on the east)

I do love all of this skate pompey baiting! Grin

Karmann · 10/09/2010 18:57

But came from Surrey with northern parents - bit of a mixed accent.

mumbar · 10/09/2010 19:03

Well why aren't you all on our pompey / IOW local mn??

mumbar · 10/09/2010 19:03

Shirly and Bitterne straight up the A27 from me Grin

pompadourprincess · 10/09/2010 19:09

LuLou I went to highbury college too didn't like it at all.. I must say as a born and bred pompey lass I dislike the amount of scummers southampton people on here Grin

SlackSally · 10/09/2010 19:09

I'm originally from Gosport and now live in Portsmouth.

I can see how the accent could be mistaken for Cockney, but to a local it's easily distinguishable. Pompey locals say 'deen teen' for down town and 'I does' or 'I knows'.

I can pretty accurately distinguish between a Portsmouth and a Southampton accent. Southampton has more west country (presumably because it's further west).

JustAnother · 10/09/2010 19:15

I work in Basingstoke and have a few colleagues who have lived all their life there. They pronounce their "th" like an "f", and they say "we was", which makes me cringe. OK, I have the strongest accent of them all, but at least I have a good excuse (didn't come to UK until I was 18). Honestly, I wouldn't particularly want a Hampshire accent for my child.

dustycups · 10/09/2010 19:26
