She came home from first day in Y1 at (Greater London) school yesterday and said "Teacher arksed me"...

ShockShock

My inner pedant is appalled.

DH's reaction is to want us to move "back" to his neck of the woods so she grows up speaking proper, like. Is he over-reacting? Wink

just don't move to Dudley

sharbie · 10/09/2010 14:39

dd has a teacher at school from dudley and she loves her accent

Feelingsensitive · 10/09/2010 14:41

Don't rely on Surrey to give you a BBC type accent. I am Surey born and bred and could easily get a bit part on EastEnders. My posh friend informed me I am unaware of the letters T and H Blush

BreevandercampLGJ · 10/09/2010 14:45

FS

Which end of Surrey ?? Grin

Although seriously, surely poor diction etc., is down to the parents. I am constantly correcting my DS, to the point where I hate the sound of my own voice. But he is not going to grow up, without being able to speak correctly.

MrsMellowdrummer · 10/09/2010 14:51

Lamplighter, oh my goodness, I'm wearing a coat today that I bought from Johnny's. That was probably my best buy ever!!

So who else used to trek around the pubs in Old Portsmouth with fake ID then?

sharbie · 10/09/2010 14:54

i went to grannys once

pompadourprincess · 10/09/2010 14:57

Not old Portsmouth but I did frequent Zoom and Basement with a friends sisters birth certificate on many occasions . Also Martins in Guildhall walk and 5th avenue which was my favourite venue ..

sharbie · 10/09/2010 15:00

it was in the tricorn i think

lamplighter · 10/09/2010 15:12

Anyone remember The Grapes in Lime Street with the mannequin at the piano?

Bumperlicious · 10/09/2010 15:31

No bree, not the leafy part Grin

Don't really think it is down to parents, think it is more down to peers. I speak fairly well, Home Counties but not too Home Counties IYKWIM, as does my mum. My bro and sis on the other hand are almost from another world...

MrsMellowdrummer · 10/09/2010 15:50

5th Avenue... Oh YES! Used to go to "Nappy Nights" there, with non alcoholic drinks only, when I was about 15 or something. We used to sip Blue Nun and rank cider under the pier before we went in though, and thought we were so grown up!

Lovecat · 10/09/2010 16:17

Bree, I am VERY well-spoken (albeit with flat A's) and DH, as previously mentioned, is almost RP-ish in his pronunciation. DD spoke beautifully til she began nursery - we are sick of correcting her and she is now (at 5) beginning to strop over us insisting she pronounces her T's. Arks was the final straw!

Funnily enough, Hampshire peeps, my DN has just come back today from a visit to Portsmouth Uni with a view to doing Criminology (sp?) there. She loved it... does this mean she's going to come back in 3 years' time sounding half Essex, half Farmer? :o

oi stop dissing the pompey accent, its class.

i have a touch of it and my dc seem to be developing nicely too!

emmyloulou · 10/09/2010 16:36

My kids are well spoken, so luckily my horror of an accent has not worn on them.

The inlaws are so funny though as DH is very well spoken but every now and then he makes a faux pas which he has picked up from me Grin Their faces.

Zoom and basement and 5th ahh yes many underage drinks in there during my college days, those were the days.

lamplighter · 10/09/2010 16:39

I am well spoken and my brother sounds like he has wandered off the Mile End Road. How do these things happen?

mumbar · 10/09/2010 17:03

Well 5th and Basement became time and Envy. Now closed down. Theres a new club in Commercial Road now. Tricorn knocked down years ago - any one remember being dragged taken there for photos at Olan Mills when young?

Most clubs are now Guildhall Walk and Gunwharf.

Can't believe no-onee mentioned Route 66 AKA Route Grin

dustycups · 10/09/2010 17:07

Meglet · 10/09/2010 17:08

Ahh route, yeah the times I have been to gunwharf when I am down it seems to be all about Tiger Tiger which seems crap.

ilovesprouts · 10/09/2010 17:13
