34 hours sober

StartingOverIn2025 · 07/01/2025 11:00

I'm doing it. I have been sober for 34 hours. How pathetic is that to be cheering myself for, but it is the longest I have been sober in probably the last 6 months. I have downloaded a support group app, and have my first virtual group this evening.

I didn't hit rock bottom, but I want better for myself and my family. I can't let history repeat itself. My father was alcoholic too and it was pure hell. Solidarity to anyone else going through similar.

Well done for deciding to change. You are doing really well. I’m cheering for you too!

StartingOverIn2025 · 07/01/2025 11:10

Thank you, I appreciate it. I'm going to keep this thread running for accountability. I don't think it's going to be plain sailing by any stretch.

You can do it OP!!

Well done! I remember my first AA meeting, telling them I'd been sober for 24 hours. I felt ridiculous. But of course I wasn't, it was just the beginning. And that was an evening in August 2019.

In the early days I had an app that counted the days, I used it until I not longer felt the need to, but watching it go up by a day each day, was so rewarding.

You've got this. You want to stop for yourself, and your family. Life begins once the alcohol stops ❤️

A big help for me, was non alcoholic beverages. I drank so much alcohol free wine, beer, cider in early recovery. I still do now when I fancy.

Candleabra · 07/01/2025 11:44

There are people who can’t imagine being without a drink for 10 minutes, so 34 hours is amazing. Keep going. Reach out for as much real life support as possible.

iamnotalemon · 07/01/2025 11:46

Amazing, well done x

Use this thread as a diary log and we will keep cheering you on.

I haven't had alcohol in over 14 years.
I never was interested in it. And after becoming Muslim obviously its against my religion to drink.
I grew up in a childhood where alcohol ruined our lives and u felt vodka and cider and beers were more important that school uniform and meals on table. We went without so much growing up and seeing the fighting and destruction it caused. My parents would drink til they were bladdered, fighting, they would blow their money on the pub and then bring home a carry out, they would bring randomness from the pub. Sometimes dangerous strangers with dangerous dogs it was horrible. Whe. I grew up, I said I will never drink or prioritise alcohol over my kids
Honestly, I'm so happy to hear you've given it up and it's been a a day and half, you will feel lighter, like a weight taken off your shoulders. Enjoy chocolate, hot bubble baths and going on walks, keep yourself busy, and perhaps lose the company of fellow drinkers who could lead you back again.
Best of luck. Rooting for you all the way.

Congratulations! That’s a good start to the year.

Every victory deserves celebration, whether it’s 12 hours or 12 months.

SleepyTraveller · 07/01/2025 12:17

That's not pathetic at all, that's brilliant! Best of luck in your continuing sobriety

thegirlwithapearl · 07/01/2025 12:21

Sending you a virtual hug and a cheer, OP, well done you 💕 keep going!

omz · 07/01/2025 12:22

OP, you're a rockstar, you've bloody got this Flowers

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 07/01/2025 12:35

That's amazing.
DM has been sober for 47 years. She still has the "1 day sober" token they gave her at her first AA meeting framed on her wall.

If it's struggle, any duration of sobriety is a huge achievement.

MissRachelismycoparent · 07/01/2025 12:51

Get the next 34 done and you may be through the very worst of it

Although that's now 32 hopefully

lostoldname · 07/01/2025 13:12

Well done OP and hang on in there!

StartingOverIn2025 · 07/01/2025 13:14

Evenings are my crunch point - I can go without all day without a problem, but when the evenings came I would reach for a bottle of cheap wine, to relax and then it escalated to a little rum and coke, then it was more rum than coke...

So, to keep myself busy in the evenings I'm starting a new series of books, and last night I started watching Black Doves on Netflix which I quite enjoyed.

Last night I really struggled to get to sleep, although back to work anxiety might not have helped, then I was awake at 3am for an hour and then up at 6am for work. Hopefully tonight will be better.

Yes they say the first 4 days are the worst don't they. I'm still hanging on in there, this evening will be the test - when that little voice says 'oh it wasn't that bad just one will be fine'....

Well done! If you use Reddit then r/stopdrinking is another really helpful place to read other people’s experiences (in case MN is quiet!).

Well done! Every new path starts with a single step.

I really enjoyed Black Doves.
I also liked The Triple Three Six Eight on Netflix.

CertifiedCool · 07/01/2025 13:55

Brilliant! Well done to you, can you get
out a walk or some form of exercise this evening? to keep yourself occupied if that is your usual time for a drink, it will really help! Great achievement! You can do it
