Anyone doing Dry January 2021?

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 28/12/2020 17:39

I was going to go sober this year...but for various reasons (excuses) it didn't happen. DP and I have agreed to try Dry January as we are both drinking too much. Anyone else fancy coming along for the ride?

I'm so looking forward to waking up tomorrow refreshed.

This thread definitely makes me more accountable- to all of you and to myself!

TSBelliot · 08/01/2021 22:19

Have found this thread a great motivator not to give in. I am not very self critical so find it quite easy to sod it and do what I want. This thread is reminding me to frame my wants more carefully. Am finding the savings motivating. And the thoughts of the health advantages. Haven’t really replaced with another drink as I don’t really care about the drinking I just like the effect. I do like sharing a drink with dh but we still hang out and I know he drinks less if I do so that’s good too.

Allycat · 08/01/2021 22:20

@ForTheLoveOfCatFood I went to Tesco tonight and the Nosecco had sold out! Everyone with the same idea!
Have you tried the Friexenet 0%? Its ok for a glass or two, but then gets a bit samey or something. A bit like the Elsberg.

ForTheLoveOfCatFood · 08/01/2021 22:37

I have one bottle left so better ration it Grin

I haven't tried friexenet I’ll look out for that.

I am definitely finding this thread helpful and to keep me accountable, looking forward to waking up feeling refreshed tomorrow for a change!

Checking in day 7. Bought some Freedam 0.0% lager which was okay, husband liked it but I found I wasn't bothered. Preferred my Bitter Lemon. Got kombucha but too scared to try it so far. Fermented tea sounds yuck.

Haggisfish · 08/01/2021 22:40

I wasn’t a fan of kombucha. I like dandelion and burdock!😂 day eight for me, too. Never thought I could get here. Tonight was definitely the hardest night so far.

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 08/01/2021 22:47

It feels very strange to be sober on a Friday night. How bad is that? Last time I went this long without alcohol was last April/May when I was on very strong antibiotics.

@TessApricot

So I had one glass of rosé (delightful) waiting for my Indian to arrive, then had an alcohol free pear cider with my curry. I am pleased I was moderate and I enjoyed it. The key is for me to stay moderate....
That's brilliant! Well done Grin

Day 5 for me as I think I drank every day in December. It won't be for the whole month as I will be toasting my DF's 70th later this month - not celebrating in person though 🥲.

But I definitely want to cut down so though a few weeks AF would do me good. Friday without a glass of wine seems strange but I have been nailing Vimto.

We can do it 💪🏼

HoxtonBonnet · 08/01/2021 23:09

Nearly gave in this evening, but DH talked me down. He is the heavier drinker out of the two of us but also has much stronger will power than me when he sets his mind to it!

We drank Fever Tree ginger ale and watched The Queens Gambit (which is ace) and I fee fine now.

Hoping for a good night's sleep!

Well done everyone - Friday is a tricky one!

Origamiheaven · 08/01/2021 23:17

This evening was a tough one. Really bad day at work. Very nearly gave in but didn't so feeling pleased now that I didnt

headlock · 08/01/2021 23:32

Day 8 for me too. Nearly cracked tonight - it did feel strange to not have a glass of wine on a Friday. DH and I are encouraging each other through the temptation.
Come February I want to drink lower alcohol wines and keep it to just one weekend night. .
I don't drink every night but it's still too much. Hoping I can stick to dry Jan and break the habit.

showmethegin · 09/01/2021 00:44

Day 8 killed me! We were so so close to caving (not helped by loads of friends and family caving too!) but we stayed strong! Just need to get through Saturday night and think I'll be safe for another week Grin

NorthernLights77 · 09/01/2021 07:18

Morning all Day 9 whoop whoop! Officially the longest I’ve been AF in about 18 months and aside from horrendous period pain and being high as a kite on codeine I’m feeling pretty ok and pretty pleased with myself.
Thanks to a PP who recommended Kombucha I managed to find a sugar free one which is quite ‘dry’ so I think that will become my AF drink of choice for now.

Sometimes123 · 09/01/2021 07:24

Good morning everyone! Pleased to say that I woke up feeling fresh, with a clear head! So pleased I fought through my crappy mood yesterday evening. I feel more motivated today to be AF. Its day 9 for me. This is the first time I have AF since I was pregnant with my DS 3 years ago! Like others, my mind has started to consider the future and what I'll do in February. I really don't want to revert back to my 'old self' where I used alcohol to celebrate and to commiserate every up and down in my daily life. I weighed myself this morning. I'VE LOST 5LBS! yeyyyyyGrin

goldpendant · 09/01/2021 08:16

Wow @Sometimes123 - 5lbs is amazing! In dare say I've probably put on weight with all the chocs I've scoffed instead of drinking, but I'll address that when they're all gone!!

I'm also determined not to go back to old ways - perhaps a Friday or Saturday drink or two but never again every day.

Well done to everyone- it's wonderful waking up with kids at 6am today and not feeling groggy/grumpy!

supercee · 09/01/2021 08:21

Day 8 for me and I honestly think it's taken this long to finally detox. Only now just sleeping better despite having a cold and the dark circles under my eyes are looking better this morning. I have been dieting but the dull aches in my lower back have gone and mood is better.

No wine cravings either and a couple of becks blue last night was lovely. I know I'll have a wobble at some point but feeling positive for now.

Rolo1324 · 09/01/2021 08:35

Good morning I broke last night 😞 had a bottle of wine slept the whole night but I feel terrible today guilty I didn't make the day 9 morning feeling fresh

SwiftyFifty · 09/01/2021 08:48

@Rolo1324 don’t beat yourself up. You have done better that any week in December ( I assume) so it’s a huge accomplishment anyway. I had a disturbed night and have a really bad sinus headache. Very very annoyed as was hoping to spring out of bed today full of the joys. I have not been Af this long in about 14 years!
What I am loving though is that my first thought on waking is not “ I am not drinking tonight” and I am going to try and stop thinking so much about NOT drinking as I don’t want it to consume me ( as drinking did)
No hangover of regrets though so this is a wonderful feeling!

CandyLeBonBon · 09/01/2021 08:54

DAY 9 PEOPLE!
Don't worry if you've taken a day off @Rolo1324 . That's all it is, taking a day off. Reframe it in your head. You haven't failed or anything. Today you can just restart again. Because that's how moderation works. You're doing great Thanks

CandyLeBonBon · 09/01/2021 08:55

I had 2.5 glasses of freixnet. Didn't really want any more than that but it took the edge off a bit. All I need to do now is make that happen with wine! Well done everyone - keep going - any little successes are still successes - you're all brilliant Thanks

SantaMonicaPier · 09/01/2021 08:56

So strange I haven't been tempted at all. Sure the fake stuff is helping. This is probably the longest I've been dry in 9 years. Well done to everyone for persevering so far, we're almost a third of the way there!

CandyLeBonBon · 09/01/2021 08:57

Freixnet 0% tjat is - not the normal fizz! Can anyone recommend a nice 0% red that doesn't taste like liquid jam?

MrsMiaWallis · 09/01/2021 08:58

I'm leaving this thread - all the stories of people drinking then starting again aren't doing it for me. This really isn't a criticism of those people, I'm human and realise how difficult it is. But to stay AF I need to be strict and be around people who are strict, or I will cave, and I really, really don't want to. Good luck everyone, however you want to get through this shit January!

Els1e · 09/01/2021 09:02

For those who have been AF during January and those of us who have fallen off the wagon and got back on - we are being mindful of our alcohol intake. So well done to us 👏
