Anyone doing Dry January 2021?

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 28/12/2020 17:39

I was going to go sober this year...but for various reasons (excuses) it didn't happen. DP and I have agreed to try Dry January as we are both drinking too much. Anyone else fancy coming along for the ride?

Thanks it is probably exactly that, I drink lots of tea and coffee all day though only have herbal in the evening. Really not sure I can bear to quit coffee aswell as wine.

You don't have to give up, just have your caffeine fill before 2pm ish.

I have a large, strong coffee first thing and a large tea around lunch time then switch to herbal.

Hi can I join you all. I’m determined to do this DJ as my drinking was out of hand during the pandemic - wine pretty much every night & plenty of it! All good so far although the high of the first day or two is fading as the imagined health gains and weight loss aren’t showing yet & like others I feel sluggish today. I guess I need to be more patient. I’m also dreading my first working dry Friday and hope we can get through it together on here!

ApolloandDaphne · 06/01/2021 19:11

My DH had a horrible day and work and I had to talk him down from opening a bottle of wine. Thankfully we are both keen to see this through and he was easily persuaded that a cup of tea would be fine instead!

OhioOhioOhio · 06/01/2021 19:15

I've realised that it's not necessarily that I need the wine it's that I cant be arsed thinking of anything else to do.

Gensola · 06/01/2021 20:19

Day 6 here - was seriously tempted to crack open a bottle today because I went into the office on rota and someone had left me a lovely bottle of white wine as a Christmas present which I didn’t pick up before we closed. I am planning to stay off booze until mid Feb as I should be having an embryo transfer for IVF then. If the IVF doesn’t work I’ll probably have some wine but if it does then I’ll be dry for the rest of 2021! Grin

Trying2021 · 06/01/2021 20:37

@Gensola that is a great reason to stay AF.

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 06/01/2021 20:50

Oooh good luck @Gensola ...will keep everything crossed for you

Thank you both! It is definitely helping me stay off the booze. It’s a frozen cycle so I could technically drink up until my period comes later this month but I want to be in the best health possible.

Big shout out to everyone! This group is amazing, have tried in the past but failed by day 3. @OhioOhioOhio has made a valid point, sometimes it easier to drink wine rather than finding something else to do..... Just coming to the end of day 6 have ticked my app... it is saying £39.00 saved along with 4885 calories. On recommendations in this group, called into the supermarket this evening and bought the Belvoir Ginger Cordial, it is a game changer, mixed with soda water, out of a wine glass. Also bought alcohol free Heineken in readiness for Friday and Saturday.
This girl is prepared. Day 7 tomorrow, we got this!! Thanks to @MyGhastIsFlabbered

CandyLeBonBon · 06/01/2021 21:18

Well done everyone! Keep going Thanks

OhioOhioOhio · 06/01/2021 21:22

Belvoir Ginger Cordial. I might try that. Is it not just really disappointing that it's not actually wine?

VirtualLearning · 06/01/2021 21:26

That’s a lovely extra reason to stay off it gensola.
I haven’t read the full thread but wonder if anyone’s had good success before and if anything helped . I have found it easier than I expected before by listening to an audio by Alan Carr as he basically puts you off wanting alcohol by reasoning and explaining it as a poison etc - but unless I re-listen to it I definitely start to feel tempted again ! And ended up drinking wine or g&ts again every day since March last year !

mrsnibblesisahero · 06/01/2021 21:46

Well done everyone, you're all inspiring me! I'm on day 5 today and have had two horrendous days with major, major work stress and home schooling combined into a pretty intolerable situation. I didn't drink!! I would normally have really hit it tonight to cope. So I'm quite pleased. On the downside I have had awful sleep since the start and an absolutely banging headache throughout. But never mind, this is the longest I've ever been without (excepting pregnancy and flu) for 30 years.

MintyCedric · 06/01/2021 21:56

Only Day 2 for me. Felt a bit headachey but not sure if it's related.

I'd like a glass of something as it's gotten to be such a habit, but not too bothered. Will head to bed with a camomile tea shortly.

I've ordered an infuser bottle and some cold infuse teabags which are supposed to boost the metabolism as I'm trying to lose weight as well as go DJ.

Going to check out some alcohol free options to add to the Tesco shop. In the meantime am finishing up the posh tonic with ice and no gin.

teelizzy · 06/01/2021 22:04

Day 3 done! 4 out of 6 days of the year so far sober. Wobbled around half six while cooking but made myself a mocktail with ice in a glass to sip while I was cooking and by the time we'd finished dinner the witching hour was over.

Happy DJ to you all whether it's day 1 or 100 x

OhioOhioOhio · 06/01/2021 22:06

What about the alcohol free g and t, has anyone tried it?

PeacheyPeach · 06/01/2021 22:09

Day 6 here- can't believe how fast the time is going.
I'm still finding it hard to get to sleep and then literally clinging to my bed in the morning which is getting me down a bit. Hoping this passes soon,

Sometimes123 · 06/01/2021 22:12

MintyCedric, I had a headache in day 2 too. It does get better. The insomnia has been a bit crap for me but I slept well last night
I went to the supermarket today and physically reached for a bottle. I had to stop myself...but I was surprised how tricky it was to be honest. I rushed to the tonic aisle and quickly shoved 6 bottles of low calorie stuff in my trolley before rushing to find limes. I felt a bit miserable TBH but I told myself that I would just go home and I'd feel better....I got home and had a drink of pop....then I suddenly realised how thirsty I was....and once I'd had a good soft drink, I didnt want wine. I'm not finding this easy, but when I struggle, I come on here to see how the rest of my AF family are getting on Smile good for motivation.

MintyCedric · 06/01/2021 22:27

Tesco have got lots of alcohol free goodies on order. I've ordered a bottle each of rose, white (sauce blanc) and red (merlot) Eisberg wine, and a couple of bottles of Doom Bar Zero.

Youngatheart00 · 06/01/2021 22:45

I really really needed a drink tonight after watching CNN for hours and the shameful scenes in Washington....very nearly cracked. DH and I ordered McDonald’s fries and a coke instead which I’m not proud of....but better than reaching for the bottle.

bert3400 · 06/01/2021 22:57

Day 6 here too. My AF options are not available here ( Spain) so am a bit envious of all the AF wine/drinks you can get . Got past the 6-7 witching hour tonight without too many problems. Weekend will be tough but it does seem to be getting easier to abstain . Keep going every one Grin

foofooyeah · 06/01/2021 23:31

Still sticking to it. Nearly had a drink on
Monday but managed to stay on track.
Also doing RED January which is basically a pledge to exercise every day.
I’m going to be a whole new me by the end of Jan.Grin

Alcohol free gin, there is one by Seedlip, haven’t tried it but a friend recommended it.

CandyLeBonBon · 07/01/2021 00:19

when I struggle, I come on here to see how the rest of my AF family are getting on good for motivation.

Me too @Sometimes123 - and well done Thanks

Haggisfish · 07/01/2021 01:01

Sixth night here!! Was hard tonight-I really wanted one but I’m glad I resisted. If I make it to seven, it’ll be the longest dry stretch I’ve had for ten years!!

headlock · 07/01/2021 01:16

Day six for me too! Can relate to the disrupted sleep. I've found it hard to get to sleep the last 3 nights. Almost cracked on tues as was watching queens gambit and their drinks looked so tempting. I resisted though!
