Anyone doing Dry January 2021?

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 28/12/2020 17:39

I was going to go sober this year...but for various reasons (excuses) it didn't happen. DP and I have agreed to try Dry January as we are both drinking too much. Anyone else fancy coming along for the ride?

Hi, just checking in, had a very long walk this afternoon and was thinking, ah stuff it, I don't drink that much, it's extraordinary times, may as well drink, but held on till after tea and it went away. Knowing I'm part of this thread is going to help me stick this out, thanks.

Blessex · 03/01/2021 21:25

@AgnesNaismith ahhh I cooked a beef casserole tonight and didn’t dare open a bottle of red to splash in so casserole went without. Well done if you managed it!

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 03/01/2021 21:31

@Sometimes123 we've done that too Blush

Well done to the PP who actually opened wine for cooking and resisted - I don't think I'd have managed that.

And well done to all of us who have managed a dry day...and to those who haven't but have faced up to it and are willing to try again tomorrow. We'll all get each other through this and (hopefully) onto a healthier future!

I did! I made. Jamie’s sausage cassoulet. The wine is on the side and it was a bad idea as I spent dinner thinking I should have a glass. After a few bites that feeling went away though. Will be trying to avoid wine in food from now on.

Agree with pp, it’s so comforting reading that everyone else has been going through the same.

Maybe you have spoken about this down thread (am going to settle in bed and read it all) but which is the best app for DJ?

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 03/01/2021 21:34

Awww reading about how this thread is helping people is giving me the warm and fuzzies. I'm so glad I'm not going through this alone. Together we're stronger

The one I downloaded was called "Try Dry"
Murphs1 · 03/01/2021 21:43

Great to see everyone doing well, and those who have slipped and got back on the wagon, well done. This thread is so comforting to read and totally gives me the motivation to keep going, and hopefully for to get through the working week and weekend coming!!! Stay strong Grin

Blessex · 03/01/2021 21:57

@NearWildHeaven ah thanks. Am downloading it. This is the first night without alcohol I can remember since lockdown began. Am so determined to do this though. I need to lose my wine belly and I am sure I am ruining my health now.

Go for it! I'm on day 3 now and this thread is keeping me sane and accountable!

You can do it 🎉

goldpendant · 03/01/2021 22:02

@Blessex @MyGhastIsFlabbered - us too, wine was the line in the sand after a day wfh, but I resisted another night when I thought I might crack - cuppa decaff and some dark choc instead now. I'm being kind to myself on the food treats as I'm having to compensate, but plan after a few weeks of this is to hit the healthier eating too.

mamaoffourdc · 03/01/2021 22:06

I only have a gin or 2 a night but it's every night often with 1-2 glasses of wine over the week
So this is day 3 af- I feel really irritated, peeing more and as hungry as a horse - is this normal??

CandyLeBonBon · 03/01/2021 22:06

Well done everybody- nearly through day 3. Roll on back to work without fuzzy heads!

wintertime6 · 03/01/2021 22:08

@mamaoffourdc I feel exactly the same, going to the loo lots, and can't stop eating! Get th

Blessex · 03/01/2021 22:08

@mamaoffourdc I am sure the hunger will kick in. I have been drinking a bottle on wine a night and jeeez all those calories.

@goldpendant I have had a big round gin glass with Seedlip, tonic and ice. I couldn’t even drink it all so half is back in the fridge for tomorrow. But it did the job at the witching hour. I have got loads of tempting non alcoholic drinks in and some zero beer. Am going to trick my body with lots of variety and exciting AF drinks.

wintertime6 · 03/01/2021 22:10

Oops posted too soon.... Get the feeling i'm annoying DH with my irritability but he hasn't said anything yet 🙈

Darker · 03/01/2021 22:32

For extra motivation, the press are reporting that alcohol can reduce the immune system’s response to the Covid-19 vaccine.

Haggisfish · 03/01/2021 22:58

Yes, it was in the daily fail and Michael Moseley this weekend. I’ll try to find a link. I like his health stuff and it had a 28 day journal in it!Blush

Ginfizz2 · 03/01/2021 23:18

I’ve managed 2 days now which I’m really pleased with. I kept myself busy doing a jig saw puzzle, found it quite stressful actually but didn’t feel I wanted a drink at all. I was thinking earlier about how much I ‘look forward’ to a glass of wine as I was thinking of just stopping completely. I’m a vegan and can’t imagine ever eating cheese again I just doing miss it but to never drink wine again it just seems absolutely impossible 🤷🏼‍♀️

TSBelliot · 03/01/2021 23:30

I am still eating. And eating. When I had Covid I ate no solids for a week but still had some drinks which doesn’t sound great really.

132orbust · 03/01/2021 23:38

I'm in too. i haven't had a drink today so I'll keep going. 1 down 28 to go.

Dugee · 03/01/2021 23:56

6pm on a Friday is my witching hour too. I'm really worried I will be thinking about it Friday afternoon whilst at work and convince myself to buy a bottle

@CoronaIsWatching are you working from home at the moment? I am but I used to find driving past the supermarket on the way home, on a Friday was a big temptation. Last year, I changed my route home to avoid going past anywhere that sold alcohol.

I'll probably come back and post on Thursday / Friday but the things that worked for me last year were having alternative plans and a stash of nice non alcoholic drinks and treats in the house already, so I couldn't make an excuse to go to the supermarket (and accidentally buy wine).

Alternative plans only needs to mean a new book or magazine ready to read. Some nice Bath stuff. A prepared Netflix list.

Sandy2019 · 04/01/2021 06:31

Hi everyone. A bit late to the party as only just saw this thread. This will be day 3 for me. I don’t usually drink during the week as I’m working but over Xmas it has been every day. Friday will be the test. It normally starts with one gin and tonic but ends up being half a bottle. I really need to lose weight so hope I can look forward to getting on the scales every Monday morning!

NorthernLights77 · 04/01/2021 06:45

Morning, just checking in today will be Day 4 for me, have felt quite irritable for the last few days but haven’t really felt the urge for a drink at all which I guess is a good thing! Anyone else here hoping to stay AF free beyond January?
