Mrsmattie, horrifically underweight? Really? That describes the woman in Sidge's picture, not the majority of models you see on an everyday basis. Thin, yes, but not horrifically underweight.

I quite like it, but mainly cos I like Beth Ditto. Obviously the lack of nipples thing is alarming, but you do have to bear (pardon the untinentional pun) in mind that this is a woman who strips off at most of her gigs, so getting naked is kind of what she does anyway. At which point, celebrating it in print is cool. I think

Exactly! This is just as warped and unhealthy as this

Why can't we see toned, healthy athletic women regardless of what size they are?

Yup, there's a lot of them out there sadly.

How anyone can think that looks good is beyond me

littlelamb · 17/02/2009 15:32

Oh come on now those ultra skinny ones are obviously as doctored as Beth's one. Trust me, they are doctored pictures. If they really were that thin they would not be used by any designers and would frankly be in a hospital on their deathbed

harleyd · 17/02/2009 15:36

they really are that thin, just the same way that fat bird really is that fat

littlelamb · 17/02/2009 15:41

Those pictures sidge has linked to are infamous pro ana ones. Just look at the shadow of the first one. I think someone needs to learn how to use photoshop a bit better...

georgimama · 17/02/2009 15:44

I actually think the really really skinny bird looks worse, and less healthy, than Beth Ditto.

For example, I bet Beth Ditto menstruates normally. Bet the other one doesn't.

harleyd · 17/02/2009 15:45

i think they both look horiffic
neither is healthy, neither is appealing
as bad as eachother

MrsMattie · 17/02/2009 17:26

Actually, I do think the majority of women in magazines are horrifically underweight. The ones that aren't are usually Barbie-proportions ie. silicone-enhanced or else air brushed to have comically a tiny waist but enormous boobs etc.

I cannot see what is healthy or normal about women of 5'11 being a size 6. If they are naturally like that, fine. But the vast majority clearly aren't. Or else they are pubescent and not yet developed.

I had a brief foray into modelling as a teen and it was a grim world, dominated by men and full of chain smoking young women with barely concealed eating disorders. I see nothing glamourous or appealing about using super thin 18 yr olds in lots of make up to sell me stuff.

Just saying.

twinsetandpearls · 17/02/2009 17:30

I think we need images of women of all sizes. I am a size 18, am not as large as Beth but am sure that if I appeared on the front cover of a magazine lots of mumsnetters would appear to say that is vile. But my dp and lots of other men find my figure attractive. When I lost weight my dp hated it, so it is not about him loving my shape because it is mine.

I think the skinnier models are worse because they are making themselves ill to fit an enforced ideal. I am not going to pretend that I am the healthiest person in the world, but I am not starving myself or making myself ill to fit an ideal.

Although I have huge self esteem issues when I go into work to teach young people I always take a lot of pride in my appearance and hope that I send the message that you can love the way you look even if you are not a size ten. Even if inside I feel very different.

Minxie1977 · 17/02/2009 17:47

Sidge - "Why can't we see toned, healthy athletic women regardless of what size they are?" Personally I would prefer a variety of images, mainly because not all women are toned, healthy and athletic.

Why do people want one uniform image to conform to? I think the negative reaction to this is as sad as it is hilarious. I think the disgust and shock at a naked fat woman is totally bizarre.

MrsMattie · 17/02/2009 18:08

I agree@Minxie.

Do people react like this when they see large women on the beach or at the pool? No. So what is shocking about it? That she is being held up as attractive or that somebody might want to see her naked?? It really does take all sorts, and contrary to the images the media try to peddle, people are attracted to all sorts.

woodenspoon2 · 17/02/2009 18:20

Ah, but you get one picture of a really quite overweight woman like Beth Ditto for "shock" value and then all of the other covers continue to be populated by very thin models. Having a cover with Beth Ditto on it does not help move us towards a society where magazine covers have women of all sorts of sizes on them. And every time someone like Jessica Simpson (see other thread, can't do links) becomes less than tiny, the tabloids run around saying she's got fat. And so it goes.

ProfessorCalculus · 17/02/2009 20:48

I don't see anyone saying the picture is shocking (apart from the odd lack of nipples). Just lots of people saying that a picture of a naked woman with big rolls of fat hanging down isn't nice to look at.

MiTochondrialEve · 17/02/2009 20:52

There are loads of covergirls who aren't a size 6 - they are on lads mags covers not fashon mags

DivamakesKimchi · 17/02/2009 20:53

who is she anyway? never ehard of her, or heard her?

MiTochondrialEve · 17/02/2009 20:54

Snidge, that pic has been doctored

expatinscotland · 17/02/2009 20:54

Real high fashion models aren't size 6, either, even when they're rail thin.

Why?

Because the height minimum for most real modelling agencies is 5ft., 9in; many are even taller.

They're too tall to be size 6, much less size 0.

Ronaldinhio · 17/02/2009 21:00

she's just a token fatty pie

There is always one and we all ohh and ahh over how happy they are with their weight, isn't it amazing etc etc
The reality is that most women look like her

I don't need a Beth Ditto, Sophie Dahl, Fern Brittan, Dawn French to be held up as a sideshow to show me how beautiful fat women are...I see it everyday
