Mutti tomatoes

I’ve always bought cheap tinned tomatoes, switched to Mutti and I can’t believe the difference! Don’t need to add half the seasoning to my spag Bol not to make it not taste so acidic.

If you’ve not tried them, make the switch!

Same! I used to think it didnt matter if I used snide 20p tinned toms.

It does matter. It matters a lot.

emuloc · 20/10/2026 08:51

Yes they are nice, but the price point is obviously higher than a lot of other brands of chopped tomatoes.

Traitor8er · 20/10/2026 08:52

I love them. You can just fry up some onion and garlic plus herbs with them for a delicious sauce.

I agree. I am on a tight budget but use them for my puttanesca sauce, such a tasty difference! They are worth it.

LoveItaly · 20/10/2026 08:53

It’s not surprising, cheap tinned tomatoes can contain around 40% water whereas brands like Mutti only have about 2% in. You only have to read the label on the tin to see the contents of a Mutti can are superior to most cheaper brands, you get what you pay for.

Myblueclematis · 20/10/2026 08:55

I buy Mutti sometimes as the percentage of tomatoes is a lot higher than most other brands, usually 99% at least. Most of the tins of tomatoes you can buy only have 60 to 65% tomatoes in them.

Lidl do a pulped tin of tomatoes that is 99% tomatoes and at 75p (I think last time I bought them), I tend to buy these more often than the much more expensive Mutti.

Roserunner · 20/10/2026 08:56

We've recently started using them as well and can't believe how much nicer our usual recipes taste and the only difference is the tomatoes. We managed to get a good deal on Amazon a few months ago so worth keeping an eye, I think we got 12 for £11.50.

storminabuttercup · 20/10/2026 08:58

Agree those and Cirio polpa ones too, I stock up when on offer, it’s the same with paying a bit more for good pasta, we now really look forward to spag Bol!

I was going to say the same is true of Cirrio too. I buy whichever is on offer and buy several at a time. However, it is one of the things I wouldn't have had a choice about years ago when my food budget was really tight. In those days I had to rely on a teaspoon of sugar and loads of herbs to make things ok.

I went to a sourdough making class which also involved making pizza. The teacher said always use Mutti as it doesn't contain something or other which is bad for health. I have always used them since.

BarbaraUsher · 20/10/2026 09:17

I noticed that the expensive brands have a little bit of salt added where the cheaper brands do not.

HelpMyBlackLabradorVotesReform · 20/10/2026 09:21

Mutti tomatoes are the best! Definitely worth paying for over the watered down cheap crap the supermarkets claim used to be tomatoes.

Sadcafe · 20/10/2026 09:23

You definitely can taste the difference, as others have said, you do generally get what you pay for

EerieDecorations · 20/10/2026 09:25

Yes, another convert here, I stock up either in supermarkets or on Amazon when they are on offer.

chocolatestodgeandcustard · 20/10/2026 09:26

I've been buying Cirio chopped while they were on offer at Tesco - they are nice.

MrsKateColumbo · 20/10/2026 09:26

They are so good! Also crio pulpa

TheDogsMother · 20/10/2026 09:28

I have recently switched to Mutti too and they really are much better. I have found the best prices on Amazon.

MintTwirl · 20/10/2026 09:28

They are lovely and quite often on offer(4 for £4) in Sainsburys so I stock up then. Well worth the little bit extra from my shopping budget.

I'd say the last thing you'd want your tomatoes to be is snide. I imagine it would make your sauce quite acidic if they were constantly making unpleasant comments about your culinary abilities.

This thread made me go off and look, citric acid seems to feature In some tins
id never thought about it just assumed the popla ones were a different tomato but seems they seem to be literally tomatoes and salt

Favouritefruits · 21/10/2026 19:19

I agree! I’ll pay the extra for Mutti Passata, well worth it! I don’t even make my own pizza sauce now as the Mutti one is so nice!

Specialagentblond · 21/10/2026 19:21

Yes we’ve switched mutton pizza sauce. We buy bulk off Amazon.

NamelessNancy · 21/10/2026 19:54

I too had a Mutti epiphany. It sounds a lot to say you're paying 3-4 times the amount of a cheap tin but that equates to about 60p in real terms for a vastly superior meal. Against the cost of eg decent beef mince it's negligible. We get cans on subscription from Amazon.

wheresmyshoe · 21/10/2026 20:14

Mutti also passed an ethical supply chain probe with flying colours. Some other brands included Chinese tomatoes grown using forced labour. Mutti all the way here, I stock up when they’re on offer. The triple concentrated tomato paste is incredible too.

mamaduckbone · 21/10/2026 20:22

Oh god I know…it’s one of our few ‘lifestyle creeps’ - I just can’t go back to cheap tomatoes now. That and proper Parmesan instead of gran padano.
