Mutti tomatoes

I’ve always bought cheap tinned tomatoes, switched to Mutti and I can’t believe the difference! Don’t need to add half the seasoning to my spag Bol not to make it not taste so acidic.

If you’ve not tried them, make the switch!

I promise this wasn’t an advert!! Just one of those mind blowing yet incredibly boring moments in life. I wish I could tell my Dad who died last year! I always remember him stood over a pan of spag Bol adding all sorts to it to get it tasting right!

It’s the same with Longley farm cottage cheese - people see so many positive posts they presume it’s advertising - but there are clearly certain brands that just have that passionate following - mutti and Longley are 2 of mine , I’ve got a few and I’m not an obsessive about brands but it’s these 2, maille tartare sauce , Idaho packet mash, stokes brown sauce etc

Someone else recommended Idaho mash to me the other day.

Yes to Longley Farm cottage cheese as well. I live quite near to where it is made yet my local Tesco doesn't stock it. Luckily the butcher's does. I bought some yesterday.

Well I know my own taste better than any of them as presumably you know yours. I’ve eaten many things prepared by very well qualified chefs that aren’t to my taste. It’s rather like someone suggesting they prefer fresh boiled new potatoes to tinned, but if no new potatoes are available they’d rather use a fresh larger potato. You could present me with a Michelin star chef farting on about the wonders of tinned potatoes and I’d disagree with them. IMO a fresh tomato is vastly superior to a tinned one, and since they are also cheaper than mutti it’s a win win.
if you buy unripe tomatoes then you can ripen them as I suggested. You can also add sundried tomato paste for a bit more depth.

The point is, things that have ripened naturally are going to be better than things that haven't.
Plus personally I don't feel like I can spare the time or headspace for ripening tomatoes (and checking when they're ripe and all that fiddle) when I can easily open a tin. Which were likely grown and ripened properly.

Love Mutti tomatoes! A rainy day here so making a big batch of bolognese from scratch by making a soffritto, adding red wine, fresh herbs etc. Popped to Sainsburys this morning to buy the tomatoes - just make sure you are getting the best deal as the 4 can pack was marked as a 'special offer'!

Agree. Tend to buy loads when £1 a tin.

x2boys · 23/10/2026 14:41

The tomatoe sauce is very good.

Papyrophile · 23/10/2026 14:46

Mutti definitely, but Lidl's deluxe tins of chopped tomatoes run a decent second, are also excellent and cost less than 80p -- but are often sold out.

Traitor8er · 23/10/2026 15:53

I've just bought some in Morrisons on offer 1.20.

Morrisons have it don't they? I'm sure I've bought it in there.

Well then I expect you would like tinned tomatoes better.🤷🏻‍♀️
I personally don’t find checking my food is ripe or giving it a boost in a brown paper bag particularly arduous. I doubt I’ve bought tinned tomatoes this decade, though I do buy passata which is similar I suppose though again fresh stuck in the nutribullet is less faff.

it’s an opinion. I’m happy to be the only fresh tomato advocate you’ve come across.

I find Idaho actually better than the fresh stuff in tubs although it probably doesn’t rank highly on the UPF listing - it’s particularly good with cottage pie etc as you can make it quite stiff - I add white pepper anda dollop of butter and is delicious - my husband told me he prefers it to actual fresh.

They do, but the butcher's is nearer.

I’ve been buying M&S tinned tomatoes (whole, not the chopped ones) 50p a tin, very thick.

There's an article in the Sunday Times today about Mutti tomatoes. I found it really interesting, and I think the fact that it is still a family run business using small local producers makes me like them even more!

Yep mutti and Longley farm cottage cheese- similar models- great products that havent sold out - it’s difficult because asa volume supplier the sheer quantity needed puts demands on you as a business and volume costs ! And it’s why you end up with turning down supplying say Sainsbury’s or Tescos - Longley farm Asan example has been in and out of major supermarkets for years and probably for this very reason - they also drive you down to an absolute minimum price where suppliers think is it worth it , when they can make more profit on lower supply numbers to say M&S , farm shops, smaller chains etc

AelitaQueenofMars · 25/10/2026 10:41

Came to post the Times article, but TonTonMacoute beat me to it! Well worth a read for the lowdown on Mutti. I bought my first-ever tins of their tomatoes yesterday off the back of this thread. Now to test them…

Trethew · 25/10/2026 10:58

Just looked at the ingredients in Idaho potatoes. Shan’t be buying that.

Yes I’m afraid I confess I eat very little UPF - but this is one of them.

DangerousThingsILove · 25/10/2026 22:10

I like Mutti. And their sauces too.

LivingTheDreamish · 25/10/2026 23:51

So true! Worth the extra cost. I've found any brand of tinned tomato product marked "made in Italy" is good, so I'll buy whichever is cheapest.

Purely based on the 100+ positive comments on here, I will be purchasing a tin of these!

JustauseraskinganotheruserWTF · 27/10/2026 13:05

I'm currently munching tomatoes on toast for lunch and I'm thinking I am a mutti convert a few extra pence adds so much to a meal imo.

Missey85 · 27/10/2026 13:08

I buy most things home brand but mutti tomatoes are worth the extra money I know it's not just water and they taste so good 😊 ❤️

Tallisker · 27/10/2026 13:28

That Times article was really good, thank you. I think I’ll pop to Booths and buy some tomatoes to make something lovely for dinner tonight.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 27/10/2026 14:04

I just use Sainsbury’s own brand, but def. not the super-cheap ones.
They seem absolutely fine to me. I often add some tomato puree, the kind that comes in a tube.

TBH I just wouldn’t pay Mutti price. I used to think they must be German, since Mutti is German for Mummy! Or maybe the name was chosen to appeal to the German market…
