Mutti tomatoes

I’ve always bought cheap tinned tomatoes, switched to Mutti and I can’t believe the difference! Don’t need to add half the seasoning to my spag Bol not to make it not taste so acidic.

If you’ve not tried them, make the switch!

Mutti is a very popular Italian brand. Italians wouldn't use anything else!!

Tourmalines · 22/10/2026 21:53

I love them . Got onto them last year from
a Chef on utube . He did taste testing on supermarket brands and these were the best hands down . Even fresh tomatoes can be tasteless and bland at times . You can never go wrong with a tin of mutti .

Newusername2026 · 22/10/2026 21:59

Off the main point but I have felt uncomfortable buying as any tinned tomatoes since discovering that the workers in Italy are terribly exploited. I would be happy to pay more for an ethical brand but it's not clear which ones are

Found these whole ones at Ocado

I’ve been trying to use organic chopped tomatoes, whichever’s on offer, Sainsburys, Asda, Tesco. Ditto tomato puree/paste. Am I wrong? I cannot quite decide. (I think Mutti Organic is the most expensive brand of tinned tomatoes, so I haven’t ever bought those).

Im beginning to think this is advertising.

Carinissima · 22/10/2026 22:22

Mutti is an institution in Italy. Favourite of grandmas. Also the paste is good.

It does look like it doesn't it, but I was tempted to try this brand after a previous mumsnet thread, and the difference in quality is astonishing. They really are worth the extra cost.

I always buy them when they are on offer.

Those who mention better quality pasta. Which brand could I buy? Thanks

De cecco

Mygreyhair · 22/10/2026 22:27

I’ve just tried Northern Pasta and thought it was much nicer.

TheTecknician · 22/10/2026 22:32

I use Cirio tomatoes to make pizza sauce. I think they're as good as Mutti, if not better, and I can usually buy them relatively cheaply at Sainsbury's with a Nectar discount.

wheresmyshoe · 22/10/2026 23:06

@Newusername2026 this is another reason to check on supply chains for sure

I’ve tried them but to be honest they are too tomatoey for me, not a fan of tomatoes so whilst I do use canned tomatoes for bolagnase, puttanesca etc I’m fine with other flavours being more prominent

NeverDropYourMooncup · 22/10/2026 21:47

That's actually a bit sad - until the last couple of years, Cirrio was cheap as anything as it was mostly sold in places like Turkish shops and if they were ever in a supermarket, they were only fractionally more than the value/basics/cheapest supermarket own brand. And now they're being sold at a premium price.

I didn't know that. I had never come across them before the big advertising campaign a couple of years ago.

Too tomatoey 🤣 Sorry that did make me laugh.

Do you prefer roast peppers?

Dreamcatcherat50 · 22/10/2026 23:32

I love how nice they look in my cupboard ☺️ (Easily pleased)

I've been in restaurants where they use the empty cans for flowers. They must make the top safe somehow?

chattyness · 22/10/2026 23:40

I like mutti tomatoes, but I can honestly say I really like a cheap brand called growers harvest even more. They aren't acidic, underseasoned or watery. They are the only plum tomatoes I will eat with a breakfast or on toast. I just made a delicious veggie Bolognese with them today and it was so delicious. They're only 43p a can too, nothing snide about that .

TurquoiseDress · 22/10/2026 23:45

Yes you’re absolutely right!

They are pricey but I tend to buy them from Ocado when on special offer!

Not to throw a flame into anyone's budget, but the Mutti San Marzano are even a step above. You can make the most flavourful sauce ever out of very few ingredients (and in very little time).

@Sunshineandrainbow Garofolo and Rummo are both excellent.

** Garofolo and Rummo are both excellent

Yes, but they are pasta

It’s the same with Longley farm cottage cheese - people see so many positive posts they presume it’s advertising - but there are clearly certain brands that just have that passionate following - mutti and Longley are 2 of mine , I’ve got a few and I’m not an obsessive about brands but it’s these 2, maille tartare sauce , Idaho packet mash, stokes brown sauce etc
