Yes, it’s a slightly dubious source but I wonder how true it is. Families with one girl and one boy come second, apparently!

How well the children get on with each other isn't the same as how happy the family is.

It certainly has been true for us. DD2 was born when DD1 was 2.5 and they were together every chance they had growing up. Barely any fighting until mid teens and then only a difficult six months. Very different people but always there for each other. Now grown up but still prioritise their relationship.
And while I do agree with @Borka that how well the children get on with each other isn't the same as how happy the family is - if children do not get on it makes for a much less relaxed household.

My parents probably weren't that happy during DSIS and my teen years 🤣🤣

ExtraHotDoubleShot · Yesterday 12:52

1 girls 1 boy here! And delighted.

OneoftheWeddingPeople · Yesterday 12:54

If you have two conscientious academic girls who get on you are definitely living on easy street.

What a load of tosh.
I have two wonderful boys and we couldn't be happier as a family!

UniquePinkSwan · Yesterday 12:55

This is a new level for man hating, I must admit

Screamingabdabz · Yesterday 12:58

My 2 dds are very different but love each other and they certainly bring joy and value to our entire family. I have a son and he does too, but I think it would be a different dynamic without the girls (now women!)

It’s not man hating it’s just a fairly arbitrary survey. Take it easy. I have one of each and we’re a very happy family and I’m very lucky, they hardly give me a moments bother with anything.

SillyBoyChuckie · Yesterday 13:03

Well I had two daughters and then I had a third child and we are definitely happier now with 3 so I wonder does that now the theory out of the water 😁

MyKindHiker · Yesterday 13:04

Load of rubbish. So many other factors - financial health, extended family health, wider support, personalities of the kids, if the kids get on with each other, strength of the marriage.

Always wanted 2 boys, have 2 boys and couldn't be happier!

Onemamawenttomoforsomepeaceandquiet · Yesterday 13:07

It's a study based on Chinese populations as far as I can tell so findings need to be taken with a large pinch of salt for various reasons. Single happiness measure, different culture and also to note that the results were more pronounced in rural communities than urban.

Bounty, the people notorious for shoving their way into postnatal wards and trying to hard sell baby photos to very new mothers? Yeah, I imagine their stats are entirely reliable.

drivinmecrazy · Yesterday 13:10

Can’t access the article but I can say that my two DDs are so close now they are all grown up.
They both prioritise their relationship above and beyond ours as parents.

I can’t say it’s because they are both girls or not.
growing up they had a 5 year gap so won’t particularly close. But now in their twenties they are closer to one another than either is to us.
That makes me so happy, it’s so beautiful to see (even if DH and i are always on the sidelines now)
I didn’t have a close relationship with my brother, likewise DH and his brother, so for us it’s wonderful to see the bond between our two.
nothing will ever divide them.

Same! Mine are young adults now and they are the absolute joys of my life. I kind of wish I could tell every idiot who ever told me that I would 'miss out' on not having a daughter how untrue that is.

drivinmecrazy · Yesterday 13:12

Forgot to answer the question, we are a very happy family and we only have daughters 😂

Spirael · Yesterday 13:12

Complete rubbish. I have 2 DD (1 teen, 1 preteen), and they're both delightful to interact with on an individual basis. But if we try and do anything as a family with them both together, all hell breaks loose.

We have very different DDs, one academic, one very practical, one tall, one petite, one dark haired with olive skin, one blonde with freckles, and they get on really well. The differences help I think.

On edit: I only have two DDs who are very different. Not six as it sounded there 😂

ElixirMaker · Yesterday 13:29

No one asked me for that survey, but I have two sons, now young adults who are best mates, have secret handshakes they invented in primary school and still do them now, share inside jokes and are so supportive of each other. We never had the terrible teen years, both of them were great.

sherbetlemonade · Yesterday 13:38

A 'British parenting survey', eh? I wonder who they asked. Confused

MN probably has the largest collection of British parents to be found anywhere, did anybody take part in this survey? Surely some of us must have done...

Skdkhvyvrhej · Yesterday 13:42

I was one of 2 sisters. I don’t think there’s anyway you could call our family ‘happy’. A very miserable affair sadly.

I don’t think it is saying that if you have two boys you are unhappy, but on the survey there were more happy girl families than boy!
