Yes, it’s a slightly dubious source but I wonder how true it is. Families with one girl and one boy come second, apparently!

Nee chance!!! My one is sending me to an early grave. My son however, not a problem.

DemonsandMosquitoes · 13/10/2026 16:35

Interestingly, men are far more likely to leave the family unit if their offspring are solely female. I’ve read stats on that numerous times.

PiffleWiffleWoozle · 13/10/2026 17:48

Ha ha. My experience of sisters I know is that how well they get on and how well the parents think they get on are often quite different.

I’ve just found out I’m having a boy (first baby) and the anti boy narrative is fucking alarming.

villadicance · 13/10/2026 17:54

I think a lot of people - men as well as women - are so desperate for daughters that when they have sons they are disappointed, they assume boys will be more difficult, will be a son till they're married and push them away.

I see it all the time on here, people being much less kind and caring about boys. Is it surprising that boys might then be more difficult or perceived as such?

RaraRachael · 13/10/2026 17:56

I grew up in a family with 2 daughters, 8.5 year age gap and narcissist mother.
My sister and I have never been close - I don't even like her that much.

So it's a heap of shite from my experience

OhMyGodSusan · 13/10/2026 17:57

Bullshit, dh grew up with two sisters and his entire family are miserable f*cks who don't speak to each other. 😂

Megifer · 13/10/2026 17:58

2 boys here and massively disagree with this based on the frankly hideous things I hear from friends and colleagues who have 2 girls 😂

When i told people I was having another boy people acted like I should be upset, like they were really sad for me? And nearly everyone, apart from my mum and DP (as they knew my hope was for 2 boys) asked if id keep trying for my girl 🙄

It’s such a shame, I’ve had some weird reactions from people. It’s made me sometimes second guess if I should be happy or not (which I quickly snap out of!)

Yes, I’ve seen this stat a lot, and anecdotally in my circle it is true! Maybe families are happier if their parents get divorced!

You’re in for the long haul! I have two boys and the amount of hate you’ll get is ridiculous!

mamaof4losingmymind · 13/10/2026 19:38

Where not teenage girls are a nightmare or at least mine are my boys are much easier

Minasama · 13/10/2026 19:40

HA!

Yello24 · 13/10/2026 20:03

I have just wasted a few minutes mentally running through all the families I know and ranking (my perception of) their relative happiness vs their children’s sexes.

Yeah it’s bollocks.

DebbieSavage · 13/10/2026 20:06

Don't let the exception disprove the rule folks. Just because your precious little baby Nigel is a delight does not mean that is the same across the board. Girls are far better behaved and that's a fact.

rainbowchild1799 · 13/10/2026 20:13

i had two girls first - then a boy. I can’t describe the feeling but the arrival of my son just completed me in a way I didn’t know I needed. I love my girls as much as I love my boy but there is just something so special about having both genders to experience. And I know I now feel happier than I did without him!

Laura9899 · 13/10/2026 20:20

One of each here. The girl much harder to parent than the boy. Two of him would be easy peasy. Two of her and I’m not sure how I would cope.

Rabbitinahabit · 13/10/2026 20:27

Not in this house! My two kill each other!

fando · 13/10/2026 20:37

I thought dads were more likely to leave families with only daughters?

I am surprised tbh (or maybe not) at how personally people have taken it.

I am actually surprised as I thought onlies would be happiest. My friends who are one and done all seem so calm compared to me. I have a boy and a girl. I’m always running around and meeting myself coming back!

And I don’t know why some people are saying well THAT’s not true because I grew up with two brothers … well assuming you’re female, that’s not a family with two boys then, is it!?

People have definitely focused on the sex rather than the number of children which is funny as we can control how many children we have (unless multiple births) but not the sex.

@ByTipsyShark if it helps I have a six year old asleep well I hope he’s asleep anyway in the room next to me. Personally and this could just be me I did find him a bit hard going as a toddler. Obviously I loved him very much, always have, but I had to keep a careful eye on him in parks and soft play as he was prone to being a thug a bit physical, he loved tractors - I had a book about life on the farm he was obsessed with but I could never read past the first page as he just wanted to point at the tractor and roar TACTORRRR so my dreams of sharing children’s books with him seemed remote, and he wasn’t into sitting still so colouring, crafts, puzzles were all out. Typical boy people might say, but as he’s grown with every passing month and year we’ve found more and more common ground. We now read so much and we both love it, we teach one another about science and nature and animals, watch David Attenborough together and yep, finally we can colour and do jigsaws. We’re working our way through a map of the world one at the moment. It’s slow going!

Caveat that my daughter is equally as wonderful. Like her brother she’s been annoyingly pedestrian as a toddler and defies MN to adore Elsa, unicorns and fairies but she loves doing puzzles, reading and sitting - all things her brother did not!

Your baby will be just wonderful because he is yours Flowers

Don't worry, its all noise once your child is there. Just loads of misconceptions about what both genders are and aren't. I've found both my children (one of each) are equally willing to disprove every stereotype either way.

Bounty, the people notorious for shoving their way into postnatal wards and trying to hard sell baby photos to very new mothers? Yeah, I imagine their stats are entirely reliable.

Does this still happen? I had it with my first two but not with third as it was covid. It was absolutely disgraceful. I felt so under pressure. Luckily I hadn't brought cash or my bank card to hospital. Even having to speak to them whilst they put your baby in poses is tiring. Taking advantage when you are exhausted and still in pain. I felt so overwhelmed.
