Cadbury's milk tray - what happened?

Pemba · Yesterday 16:42

Was given one as a present. A nice thought but ........ Every flavour tastes exactly the same, no fruit flavour in the strawberry etc. Just generic vaguely chocolate-y shapes Filled with the same sweet paste. Well OK the nut ones were slightly crunchy.

It's a travesty of how they used to be - I won't buy them and will try to make sure nobody gives them to me again. Yuck! What a shame they've been ruined.

They don't have a strawberry one, but I agree they are all very similar.

Choccyp1g · Yesterday 16:50

Oh sorry there is a strawberry one in the bigger box. I just get the bargain £4 deal from Sainsbury

Pemba · Yesterday 16:54

My mistake, they are heart shaped and supposed to be a 'truffle heart'. I think there used to be strawberry ones.

The so called orange truffle doesn't taste of orange!

Right, I guess I know where DH got it then!

Milk Tray (and Black Magic) etc, have been very poor for years. They used to be a 'nice' box of chocolates but now the standard has dropped massively, possibly because we now have access to a range of more high end alternatives and also because they will have been kept down to a price point, necessitating a reduction in quality. Ie, if they cost £5 5, 10, 15 etc years ago, that was a lot of money, so equivalent to what good boxes of chocolates cost now - say £20/30 or more.

But they only cost a few quid, so are shit, but sadly not everyone realises that. All you can do is accept them for what they are or send them to the next raffle/tombola etc unopened.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · Yesterday 16:58

Milk Tray used to be a lovely treat. They're truly bad these days. Sugary flavourless fillings, waxy flavourless chocolate.

Bjorkdidit · Yesterday 17:00

But if it's your DH, surely you can say to him that you don't really like them and suggest alternatives. I always make it known that if someone wants to buy me a small treat for a few pounds, I'd like a box of florentines, eg M&S, £4.50. Or even just a box of Border chocolate gingers that cost under half that.

murasaki · Yesterday 17:04

Well Cadbury got bought by Mondelez and the chocolate went American. Best avoided for a while now.

GoldMoon · Yesterday 17:07

I don't think I've eaten milk tray for years as I'm sure they've been crap for ages .

Pemba · Yesterday 17:07

Calling at M&S would involve him going out of his way though! 😊

To be fair, he probably has no idea as he's not interested in chocolate or most sweet stuff himself. I'd rather have had flowers tbh, as I am trying to diet.

I will wait until a suitable number of days has gone by and suggest he doesn't waste his money on these again, though. Or anything Cadbury's I suppose. Sad after the long history they have had in the UK.

Palm oil. Completely changed the taste.

climbintheback · Yesterday 17:12

They are horrible because of palm oil instead of milk - give them a wide birth and look for chocs without the shit! Save our dairy farmers!

JenniferBooth · Yesterday 17:16

There is a pic doing the rounds of the piece of paper you used to get in the Roses tin telling you what the chocolates were. From the 1980s Id love a 1980s tin or jar of Roses

HedgerowD · Yesterday 17:17

Cadburys is just shit now. It doesn't even melt properly, it bends.

CatBusStop · Yesterday 17:17

Not milk tray but I had a fruit and nut bar the other day and omg! They are thin and the nuts are so chopped they are barely there

Sesma · Yesterday 17:19

It's been like it for years, probably because it's cheap

madaboutpurple · Yesterday 17:21

M&S Big Mix are far superior to Cadbury's Roses or Quality Street. The variety is far better as well.

HauntedBungalow · Yesterday 17:21

Sad for us, yes. Presumably Cadbury's themselves don't care because they've chosen to stop making nice chocolate.

Happyjoe · Yesterday 17:23

Not bought them in years as went downhill and bought my other half a black magic box, as he was saying how much he liked them as a kid. They were waxy, no real dark choc richness and pretty vile. Choose your calories as they say!

Christmas tubs are the same, Quality Street should be renamed without the quality bit and roses are going the same way. All cheap, nasty stuff but not cheap price.

newmummy2006yay · Yesterday 17:27

I love the orange

Agree with this! Bought a tin a few days ago after seeing loads of recommendations on MN. They’re really nice! Had a to trial them before deciding what to buy for Christmas! 😁

StrawberryMatchaLatte · Yesterday 17:30

They've been like this for ages. Those and Dairy Box. Like eating lumps of sweet wax.

FFSItsTooHot · Yesterday 17:33

I may be wrong, but I suspect the reason that Cadbury's chocolate has gone down the pan is because because the company is now owned by an American firm. And in my opinion, American chocolate is crap.

My late Dad used to call this 'the map'. 😂
