What’s the hardest thing you’ve ever been through and how did you cope?
Currently going through the absolute hardest year of my life with a health issue that has changed my whole life and struggling to cope and stay positive.
Just looking for stories and advice to help me feel less alone.

The death of my child. 5 years ago. Don't think I'll ever get over it
I hope you get help to cope and wish you all the best . Sorry I've no particular advice but to take things day by day

Having a child with anorexia, hospitalised for 7 months and tube fed. Absolute hell when she was there but also at home. She’s doing better now a few years later

OX0 · 28/09/2026 20:22

And I’m sorry you’re going through this and to anyone else going through hard times

Autumnandwintergardening · 28/09/2026 20:25

The death of my grandmother the one person who really loved me.

A continuing estrangement’s from abusive parents.

A difficult time with my daughter (her not speaking to me) after some difficult behaviour from her and me challenging her.

NotrialNodeal · 28/09/2026 20:25

My grandparents died (they raised me) and a couple months after I was violently raped. It left me suicidal. I'm sorry you are struggling. I hope things feel easier soon. X

Only 23.
Broke up with fairly serious boyfriend.
Shortly after my DDad had a massive stroke on a Christmas work night out, 2h drive away from home.
Spent weeks driving up & down the M40 daily with Mum to sit with him until he was well enough to move locally.
Christmas day ex BF accidentally text me instead of his new GF.
Who it transpired was pregnant and there was an overlap.

It was only one day but fuck me, driving 4h to see my beloved dad strapped to beeping machines in ICU & then receiving an 'accidental' text about xbfs new GF & imminent baby on that Christmas day was... challenging.

But my kind of experience was short, it healed and my Dad is still around 20 years on. Wobbly but here, he's my inspiration. Lots to be grateful for. And @BeRightBack86 it really showed me how precious our health is, I'm sorry you are experiencing issues.

It's nothing like losing a child or having a very ill child 💖 I'm so sorry @Snowyowl99
@OX0 - I'm so pleased she's doing better.

Breast cancer. Chemo during Covid. Massive reconstruction surgery and then home schooling.

Spaniels4Eva · 28/09/2026 20:30

My second baby was stillborn, I was only 24 at the time and it was a life changing moment in so many ways. We had a few hours with him after he was born, but handing him back to the midwife so she could take him to the mortuary was probably my hardest life moment. As was signing the consent form for a post mortem. No cause was found, it was just labelled as "unexplained". I feel so cheated of all the milestones with him and often wonder what sort of person he would have been. It just all feels like such a waste. He would be 31 now and I still get choked on the anniversary of his delivery date. I can't call it a birthday. But I survived it. And life has gone on.

My husband turning yellow just as lock down hit, hospitals overrun with COVID meaning his cancer diagnosis was delayed and delayed and delayed. His signs and symptoms of a DVT being ignored by our local hospital, his subsequent stroke and bilateral pulmonary emboli. Bringing him home, profoundly disabled by the stroke and non-verbal. Nursing him at home, pretty much alone because it was lock down.

Iheartpasta · 28/09/2026 20:33

The stillbirth of my firstborn was probably the darkest of my life.
OP I don’t know if this will help but I read “solve for happy” by Mo Gawdat and it gave me a new perspective on life

DancingInTheMoonlights · 28/09/2026 20:34

Being in a DV relationship and the lasting effects of that for many years after.

mamaduckbone · 28/09/2026 20:36

Losing my dad very suddenly and unexpectedly when ds was only 2. I was utterly broken.

LindorDoubleChoc · 28/09/2026 20:38

I am so sorry you are going through such tough times OP. I send you love, support and strength.

I turn 64 tomorrow and I've been through the usual for someone of my age - deaths of parents, money worries, infertility worries, difficult teenage children, career problems, mild depression on and off.

But as I look back, especially through the lens of having two children of my own, I've come to realise that absolutely the hardest time of my life was ages 10 to 18. My parents divorced when I was 10 and I lived alone with my very depressed and latterly alcoholic mother until I left home for University.

I'm strong and very resilient because I got through that as a child with no support. Such a sadness for me to have had such a shit childhood and teenage years with no adult really engaged with me.

BeRightBack86 · 28/09/2026 20:39

Thank you for sharing your stories, we really don’t know what other people are going through do we. I feel strength from knowing other people have picked themselves up and gone on. My problem pales into insignificance compared to others and I am sending love to everyone ❤️

Being left when I was pregnant, 9 years on we’re doing well.

Being diagnosed with an incurable neurological condition that causes permanent pain. I don’t know how I keep going sometimes and do have a good cry about it every now and again.

Sorry you’re having a tough time.

menopausequeen · 28/09/2026 20:41

So sorry to hear of everyone’s experiences.
I think loosing my dad and missing his final hours due to distance was awful. Then a serious health issue. Both times I felt like I’d never feel happy again, but I was wrong.

Blondeshavemorefun · 28/09/2026 20:42

D’s - death and divorce - death of my dh and he really was my darling husband and my mum died 3yrs later and then divorce this year

sorry for anyone illness/bad health and death of a child. That to me has to be the worst.

have always said a parent shouldn’t have to bury their child 💐

familyissues12345 · 28/09/2026 20:42

Cancer diagnosis for 5 year old DS was tough for us all as a family. Really tough.

I have to say individually though, a massive panic attack left me suicidal and utterly terrified of life and that was horrific. 13 years on, I’m a lot lot better, but it changed me forever

Xmasbaby11 · 28/09/2026 20:44

This Last year or two. Dh has serious depression and has been out of work most of the last two years, my mum has dementia, my dad is falling apart he’s so upset. What else. My industry is in decline so I’m trying to retrain, at 50, perimenopausal and everything going on. And some other health problems probably to do with my weight. Obviously under financial strain with only me working most of the time. Oh and two teens who aren’t getting enough attention, one ASD and the other suspected.

It’s all a shit show really.

JoyousWriter · 28/09/2026 20:45

A long time ago now, but all in the same year:

Death of 3 school friends
Death of my grandad
Redundancy
My divorce
Youngest child started the process of being diagnosed with various disabilities
Depression (unsurprisingly!)

Sorry to everyone on the thread for your worst times.

RaraRachael · 28/09/2026 20:47

Mine isn't much compared to some others.

Splitting up from lazy useless husband and my mother totally taking his side. Moved into my own house only to find there was virtually no mobile signal.
I've never felt so alone.

badpussycat · 28/09/2026 20:49

Finding my husband after he took his own life then having to give cpr until emergency services arrived, then having to tell my kids their dad is dead 💔

Supersimkin7 · 28/09/2026 20:49

Massive respect to all posters. Everyone shows courage and hope personified.
