Does anyone else like a shorter man?

I’m watching a Stacey Dooley programme about men having operations to lengthen their legs and increase their height, and it’s such a brutal operation that it seems completely mad to me that anyone would put themselves through it.
It got me thinking about how much height actually matters when it comes to attraction. I’ve always preferred men who are on the shorter side. I’ve never dated anyone over 6ft, and I can’t really think of a man I’ve fancied who was even approaching 6ft. Most of my boyfriends have been within a couple of inches of my height (I’m 5'6"), and I genuinely wouldn’t mind dating someone the same height as me or even shorter.
Tall men actually make me feel slightly uncomfortable in a physical sense, they seem to loom over me a bit, and there’s something about the height difference that makes them feel almost quite far away.
Am I an outlier here, or is height really as important to women as men seem to think it is? I do remember a few female friends, and actually some gay male friends, having a minimum height they would go for, and being genuinely annoyed when people exaggerated their height on dating profiles. So clearly it matters to some people.
I’m just wondering how widespread the preference for taller men actually is, versus how much men think women care about it.

I don't mind height v much, have dated same heoght as me (5 feet 6), a bit shorter, to over 6 feet. I prob wouldn't fancy like 5 feet 2 or smaller....
I'm not attracted if they're more petite than me though. I mean I've dated skinnier than me but i don't like it if their hands and feet and everything are smaller than mine you know?
In saying that if i got to know someone then that probably wouldn't matter either.

BelleEpoque27 · 21/09/2026 23:08

I had to double-check this wasn't an old post by me, OP 😂 I feel exactly the same, don't like being loomed over and prefer a man around my height or a bit taller. I'm 5'6" and have dated men shorter than me and up to about 6ft. DP is 5'8ish and just right.

Do you not think biology comes into play? What our species prioritises and why? I feel safer with taller men. I also want to know my man can lift me if needed(!) or reach stuff on high shelves.

I find that quite odd - why would he need to lift you? I agree tall can be useful, but you can also just keep a step stool around the house 😂

Over the 20 years DP and I have been together, we've both gained and lost and gained and lost lots of weight. He's currently much slimmer than me because he's been on the jabs. Five years ago things were different. I don't care either way, it's really not important.

It's easier to not be fussy about your partner's height when you are short yourself. When you are tall, it's different as you don't want to look like you are going out with a child or feel like an ogre next to elf.

Exactly.

I am 5'2" and have dated men from 5' to 6' and about 5'5" - 5'8" is about right for me !

Mammyloveswine · Yesterday 01:49

I’m 5 foot 4 and my partner is 6 foot 5.. I absolutely love it!

Thinkofnewthings · Yesterday 01:51

My DD’s boyfriend is quite a bit shorter than me, and I’m 5’5”.

slartibartfastina · Yesterday 01:54

I agree that height isn’t the universal pull factor people seem to think it is. I have found many men who were relatively short very attractive. It matters much more to me if they are physically fit and the lanky skinny long drink of water type doesn’t appeal at all. I am only 5’2” as well so finding a shorter man would be very unusual. That said, my husband is 6’4” and I do find his height and stature very appealing but that’s because it’s part of him. It does make it easy to find him in a crowd though!

FruitFlyPie · Yesterday 02:11

My DP is shorter than me so I'm OK with it, although it's not my favourite physical trait of his if I'm honest.

But OP I think your post is proving the opposite point. You say you don't care about height or even prefer shorter men, then to prove your point say you've always dated men just "a few inches taller". A few inches taller is still taller.

It would be like a man making a post saying "I don't go for slim woman, I like big women - I'd even date a woman that was a size 10 or 12!!".

Onwards2627 · Yesterday 02:18

I definitely prefer someone close to my height and I am not tall - 158 cm.

6” plus men intimidate me somehow and their stride is too long for me.

My current partner is just a bit taller than me and TMI we “fit” so much better in bed - also hugs and kisses are at the perfect level - I much prefer it. I do not at all understand the hype about tall men. Never have.

My partner is not very much taller than me but he is very strong - he can definitely still lift me.

I would be interested in any man who was so insecure he’s had his legs lengthened. I don’t ever really think about height. Smart, kind, funny, and clean are requirements. Bonus points if he’s good looking. I find the more I like someone, the better looking they get.

Chickadee26 · Yesterday 03:42

Doesn't appeal to me.

littlemisspickles · Yesterday 04:33

First husband 6ft2, second, and by far the best, 5ft 7. Me 5ft 5 but shrinking fast. Daughters boyfriend around 5ft 6, she's about 5ft 4, she adores him. My Dad was also around 5ft 6, perhaps its what we are used to

Yes!! I do not like a taller man. Long feet, long necks, yuck!! Does nothing for me. 5ft 9/5ft 10 is about the max I like! I love a shorter, more stout man (Tom hardy, Zac Efron in his documentary series, the other Hemsworth brother 😂)

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · Yesterday 05:11

A lovely boyfriend of mine in my 20s was barely taller than me (5ft 4.5), my current boyfriend is 5ft 7 and the one before that was 5ft 10. My boyfriend now was very good looking (pretty) when younger and thinks because he has asthma and used steroid inhalers and had other medication that his growth may have been stunted. His development was stunted and he saw doctors about it who suggested treatment but his dad wasn’t keen on it as it was still in the early stages of development of the drug.

Anyway, it makes no difference to me and in the past he’s had a few partners so not made a difference to him either really.

Moomieboo · Yesterday 05:30

It makes no difference when you are lying down !!!🤪

Silvercoconut · Yesterday 06:17

Couldn't are less about a man's height!
It would absolutely be the LEAST important factor for me, a kind disposition and good hygiene are more important!
(Also a man who doesn't remove his chest hair 🤣🤣🤣)

Wallywobbles · Yesterday 06:20

My husband is probably 2 cm taller than me tops. I’m 5’2 I think. Never been an issue. Easy to kiss and we still kiss a lot.

BrickMaker · Yesterday 06:21

I'm 5"6 too but really petite. My husband is 5"11 roughly and that is plenty tall enough for me. I did have a very tall bf as a teen (he was 6"4) and I found him overwhelmingly large. Tall men really like me however but I find I feel like a child next to them, so yeah 6" would be the max height I could go for and prefer shorter.

Herecomethegirls1 · Yesterday 06:22

Yet there would be outrage if a man rejected a woman because her breasts were too small and he prefers bigger ones, she's a size 10 and he prefers a size 6, and so on..

Redflagsabounded · Yesterday 06:27

I've dated a whole range of heights as it isn't a factor for me in attractiveness.

From experience though, for practical reasons I like a more compact man - they don't eat you out of house and home or take up all the space in the bed!

WeirdyBeardyMarrowBabyLady · Yesterday 06:36

I once went to a wedding where the groom was about 6’4’’ (and quite a large man overall) and the bride about 4’11’’. The first dance was so weird. Like Shrek and Princess Fiona. So definitely something to be said for being within 4-5 inches of each other whatever the actual numbers (certainly on the aesthetics of it all if that matters).

I have always really liked that Sophie Dahl and Jamie Cullen got together. They seem like a very happy couple despite the obvious height difference and society’s weird hang up about men needing to tower over a woman.

sillyrubberduck · Yesterday 06:38

I am 5:11 and I prefer men to be taller than me . However I did have same height or slightly shorter boyfriends. DH is taller than me but this was not one of the criteria I’ve married him.
