Does anyone else like a shorter man?

I’m watching a Stacey Dooley programme about men having operations to lengthen their legs and increase their height, and it’s such a brutal operation that it seems completely mad to me that anyone would put themselves through it.
It got me thinking about how much height actually matters when it comes to attraction. I’ve always preferred men who are on the shorter side. I’ve never dated anyone over 6ft, and I can’t really think of a man I’ve fancied who was even approaching 6ft. Most of my boyfriends have been within a couple of inches of my height (I’m 5'6"), and I genuinely wouldn’t mind dating someone the same height as me or even shorter.
Tall men actually make me feel slightly uncomfortable in a physical sense, they seem to loom over me a bit, and there’s something about the height difference that makes them feel almost quite far away.
Am I an outlier here, or is height really as important to women as men seem to think it is? I do remember a few female friends, and actually some gay male friends, having a minimum height they would go for, and being genuinely annoyed when people exaggerated their height on dating profiles. So clearly it matters to some people.
I’m just wondering how widespread the preference for taller men actually is, versus how much men think women care about it.

It's easier to not be fussy about your partner's height when you are short yourself. When you are tall, it's different as you don't want to look like you are going out with a child or feel like an ogre next to elf.

I’m 5’2” and have dated men ranging from 5’6” to over 6 foot. I’ve come to the conclusion that I don’t actually have a preference and I think short men are completely underrated.

Yetanotherone12 · 21/09/2026 21:05

I would, and have dated men shorter than me. In fact weirdly pre dh I don’t think any of my boyfriends were over 5’6- I’m 5’4.

possibly because I hung around with a lot of dancers and athletes who tend not to be tall. Dh is the outlier- I tried rowing for a bit and they’re taller than average so he’s 5’10, still short for a rower 🤣.

i also find bald very sexy though.

i’d rather have a confident short and/or bald man than one so insecure he resorts to surgery because of perceived shortcomings.

Too many tall men think being tall is a personality trait. Very tedious. I like a shorter man. And, just to respond to something up thread, being shorter doesn’t give them small hands, they’re still very much men.

UnaGatita · 21/09/2026 21:07

There was a thread on here a few weeks ago where all these insane women who were 4’11” declaring their minimum height requirements were 6’. Ridiculous. I’m happy with around my height - 5’7” but currently trying out tallest yet at 6’6” which seems excessive - it’s ok sitting and lying down. Pain in the neck when we’re standing…

BreezyClouds · 21/09/2026 21:09

I've had boyfriends of various heights, never felt comfortable with the ones shorter than me or much taller. I'm 5'6 so between 5'8 and 6' is the sweet spot for me.

Problem is many of the short men I’ve met have a real hang up over it, they don’t call it short man syndrome for nothing.

fumingrightnow1 · 21/09/2026 21:12

As long as they are my height or slightly taller then thats fine with me im 5ft 2 have dated taller men and I always feel a bit weird stood next to them prefer someone closer to my height

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 21/09/2026 21:20

I'm tall myself, so never going to be in a position where a man towers over me/gives me a crick in my neck but I can't imagine I'd like it at all. I don't want to feel completely powerless (even though realistically, able bodied men of any height could overpower me).

Anyway there are far, far more important things. What's he like? How does he treat you and make you feel? Are your values aligned? These are the things that really matter.

No, no it isn’t

seahorsessky · 21/09/2026 21:26

Wouldn't bother me much. My partners have always been taller than me, but then I'm not tall, but height wouldn't be a major issue if I liked a man. I find it sad that people are risking their health for this operation, just like I find it sad women have boob jobs if they're scared people won't like small cup sizes. We can't deny that SOME people won't date small men and small-breasted women, but many people are more bothered about character than height/cup size.

I’m short. All the men in my family are pretty short. My children are. None of them care or are ‘hung up’ on it.

LastNightMyPJsSavedMyLife · 21/09/2026 21:35

Shorter men tend to have small hands IME. My 3 sons are between 5’ 10 and 6’ and small hands remind me of when they were little boys so no thanks. I’ve dated 5’ 5” to 6’ 4”. Preferred height is 5’ 9” - 6’ 2”😁

MyGirlJ · 21/09/2026 21:42

I like a shorter man. Not too short, but 5ft 6 minimum. I'm 5ft 5. I've found that my best sex has been with shorter men, I think our proportions worked well together. I also don't like kissing men that are much taller than me, neck ache!

Men don't seem to mind going out with short women though.

I'm short and DH is 5'6" so taller than me but not enormous. Our house is designed for our height, I've had tall friends knock their head on the big light and complain about our low level sofas. I get a bit freaked out by tall men, my Dad and brothers are all under 6'. And short people live longer.

JohnBullshit · 21/09/2026 21:48

I've never had a preferred height. I'm married to a tall man, and one of his most irritating attributes is his complacency about the imagined superiority of the tall male, as if continuing to grow beyond a certain point was within his power to bring about. I'm short, if you couldn't guess, and my boyfriends have been everything from slightly shorter than me to over a foot taller. Too tall can definitely require workarounds that aren't necessary with a shorter partner.

beingtakenforafool · 21/09/2026 21:52

im only 5ft 2 and soon to ex dh was 6ft 1 and I often went for tall guys. On dating apps now and i am still drawn to 5ft 10 upwards and no idea why.
i have swiped right on shorter men though and most men would be taller than me , maybe its just because I think thats what I am used to , so it just seems right. But overall height should be the least thing i need to worry about

Error404FucksNotFound · 21/09/2026 21:53

I'm 5 2 and my husband is 5 7 or 8 ish. He's plenty tall enough imo

Gribouille · 21/09/2026 22:01

Ratherhaveacupofteaandabiscuit · 21/09/2026 20:16

It makes no difference to me whatsoever.

I am quite tall myself but height would not put me off a nice man.

As long as they are clean I am not bothered by appearance at all. I find other things more attractive, obviously personality and character but also things like their voice and mannerisms.

I have a bit of a crush on Simon from Gogglebox who is very short.

Have been married twice, first husband was about my height, second a good bit taller but have been out with shorter men in my youth, one in particular I really liked and would have happily taken it further.

Oh, I love me a short king! No shorter than me, I'm 5'4", but can I join you in the Secret Simon Club? He seems like he'd be a fun hang, and his lovely relationship with his sister suggests he'd be comfortable with women.

I've found they're good dancers etc... 😏 I love their compactness, their physical 'togetherness'. Gangly doesn't do it for me, and I'm always sorry to hear of short men putting themselves down, no need.

Good we all like something different, isn't it? More to go around! 😁

Presto942 · 21/09/2026 22:01

I’m 5ft1 and my husband is 5ft5. My ex was 5ft7 I think. Never been with a tall man but this might be coincidence rather than anything else. I was certainly not put off my partners because of their height, I don’t think I gave it much thought. I suppose I prefer that a man doesn’t tower over me, thinking about it, I find that a little intimidating and being so short many men do.

KnitFastDieWarm · 21/09/2026 22:02

All my best sex has been with men under around 5’9. I have a theory that the testosterone is more concentrated 😁

DP is 5’8 on a good day and is the sexiest man i could ever have imagined, let alone met.

Echobelly · 21/09/2026 22:04

I'm 5 ft 1 and have no problem with short men potentially - I once rather fancied a good looking guy who was probably about 4ft 11. I feel absolutely no extra attraction to men for being tall, in fact I'd find it kind of awkward. DH is 5ft 8ish and thinks of himself as short but seems fine to me and I think most women.

DS (15) is nearly same height as DH but I don't think will be much taller, I'm not sure there are any men over 5ft 8 or 9 on either side of the family. At least none of the boys have taken after my maternal grandfather and his family where I don't think anyone was over 5ft 1.

Dandeloosha · 21/09/2026 22:07

Hey, if shorter men are good enough for Zendaya they’re good enough for me!
