Does anyone else like a shorter man?

I’m watching a Stacey Dooley programme about men having operations to lengthen their legs and increase their height, and it’s such a brutal operation that it seems completely mad to me that anyone would put themselves through it.
It got me thinking about how much height actually matters when it comes to attraction. I’ve always preferred men who are on the shorter side. I’ve never dated anyone over 6ft, and I can’t really think of a man I’ve fancied who was even approaching 6ft. Most of my boyfriends have been within a couple of inches of my height (I’m 5'6"), and I genuinely wouldn’t mind dating someone the same height as me or even shorter.
Tall men actually make me feel slightly uncomfortable in a physical sense, they seem to loom over me a bit, and there’s something about the height difference that makes them feel almost quite far away.
Am I an outlier here, or is height really as important to women as men seem to think it is? I do remember a few female friends, and actually some gay male friends, having a minimum height they would go for, and being genuinely annoyed when people exaggerated their height on dating profiles. So clearly it matters to some people.
I’m just wondering how widespread the preference for taller men actually is, versus how much men think women care about it.

I’m 5’4 and dated a guy who was only an inch taller than me and honestly I felt like we were both kids I really didn’t like it! My husband is 5”10. Ive also dated someone who was 6”10 and that was just insane, like kissing a giraffe. I do like a 6 footer but clearly not a deal breaker!

I’m 5’0 so pretty much every man is taller than me 🤣 DP is 5’8 and that feels like a nice height for me.

Our DS is teeny tiny though, I don’t think he will be much over 5’5 as he’s still in 9-12 clothes at 20 months!

My DS2 was the same. All the height predictor things said hed be 5ft 3. Hes about 5ft 8 or 9.

Im 5ft1 so most men are taller than me, so the question of dating a shorter man has never come up. I have met 2 men shorter than me. One is a drug addict, so I wouldn't date him anyway. The other is my exes dad.

I do like really tall men though. I currently have a bit of a crush on someone who is 6ft 9.

Thundertoast · 21/09/2026 22:12

Short men are massively underrated!
Plus to me, there's nothing sexier than a man who couldnt give a shit about what people think is the 'manliest' way to be, so short men who couldnt give a fuck that they are short - definitely fit into that category.

I’m 5’2, my husband is 5’8 and that’s just right for me. I’ve dated men over 6’ and found it impractical! Happy to leave them for the taller ladies to enjoy.

I briefly dated a guy who was 5’4 and he had smaller hands than me and was thinner and it just felt weird… I’ve been attracted to similar height men who were beefy though so maybe it’s more shape than size?

Fluffyowl00 · 21/09/2026 22:13

I’m with you. I’m 5’4 and anything past 5’8 is a bit much. Find men over 6 foot are a small head on a long body. Don’t understand the attraction. However I did go on an internet date with a guy who claimed to be 5’8 and was clearly 5’3 or less. Didn’t bother me but the other lies (2 well used baby seats in the back of the car when I walked past and no mention of kids or ex wife really did!)

ThisThreadCouldOutMe · 21/09/2026 22:14

This thread is the complete opposite of when I've seen this topic on here in the past BTW. Years ago there was definitely an air of "short men? Ewww, no!" Which always had me slightly worried about my potentially dinky DS.

Dmsandfloatydress · 21/09/2026 22:18

Love me a short fella. All then men in my family are short and stocky. I couldn't work with short and skinny but short and stocky with thick thighs, love it! I agree thar it works much better in bed too.

It's easier to not be fussy about your partner's height when you are short yourself. When you are tall, it's different as you don't want to look like you are going out with a child or feel like an ogre next to elf.

It's not. I'm taller than my partner and I can assure you I don't feel like an ogre or his mother 🤨🙄

Pinkissmart · 21/09/2026 21:27

I’m short. All the men in my family are pretty short. My children are. None of them care or are ‘hung up’ on it.

Just as well I didn’t say all of them eh? I’ve met many that are. The men in my family are very chippy about it.

MidnightScroller · 21/09/2026 22:37

I think it’s like women assume all men prefer big boobs but plenty like small or aren’t bothered either way. There’s (supposedly) someone out there for everyone. If you want someone that is lol

bumblingbovine49 · 21/09/2026 22:39

I've posted this before but I have a similar reaction to men who are too tall( IMO)

I prefer someone close to my height . I'm 5f 7 and have rarely been attracted to or donne more than casually date anyone over 5ft 10. My first husband was 5ft 10, all of my later partnes and DH were 5ft 9 or less

Vargas · 21/09/2026 22:43

I like a tall man. I’m 5-6 and DH 5-11 and he’s borderline 😂.

BrilliantBetty · 21/09/2026 22:43

I like tall men. 6ft+

I think - and it's just a guess - that most women don't mind what a man's height is, as long as he is at least 4-5 inches taller than her. Most women don't want a man who is shorter than her IMO. Like most men don't want a fat woman if they are being truly honest.

I just watched that Stacey Dooley programme too. I would NEVER have that hideous brutal risky surgery to extend my legs. I would be so worried about lifelong pain in the legs. No way would I risk it. Just to be a few inches taller. I bet they all get osteoarthritis about 10 years after doing it.

Nope!

.

JustSetFireToIt · 21/09/2026 22:45

I’m 5’ 6” and I think, for me, the perfect height for a man would be 5’ 8” - 6’.

I once dated someone who was 6’ 4” tall and it was just so physically awkward in every respect. He looked magnificent though - like a Viking warrior!

OldieButBaddie · 21/09/2026 22:47

Definitely prefer a shorter man - i once had a bf who was 6 foot 6 ( a foot taller than me) and all I could see was the underside of his chin and his Adam's apple which grossed me out, plus I got a sore neck. I never went near a tall man again!

I also think they are just overall too big but if not look weedy and skinny.

Just personal preference obv!

Unmotivatedteen · 21/09/2026 22:47

This thread is very reassuring.

My DS 17 is only about 5ft3 or 5ft4 due in part to treatment for cancer when he was younger and I know it bothers him quite a bit 😞

He has been offered and is considering the leg lengthening treatment the OP mentioned.

DramaAlpaca · 21/09/2026 22:53

I'm 5'10. I honestly wouldn't want to date a man shorter than me, I just wouldn't be comfortable with it. Around 6ft is perfect for me. I don't go for very tall men, I prefer them just a bit taller than me. DH is 5'11 so just right.

AnotherDayOfSun · 21/09/2026 22:54

Yeah, it's silly and kind of the equivalent of men having bmi requirements - not so much about attraction and more about having an arbitrary standard that society/the media have told them they should care about. Both men and women probably miss some great opportunities that way.

GentleSheep · 21/09/2026 22:55

I'm exactly the same, OP. I feel intimidated by taller men. I am tall myself but prefer a partner the same or shorter. My DP is 4 ins shorter.

Awkwardisfunny · 21/09/2026 22:57

Goonie1 · 21/09/2026 19:29

I’m 5ft 2 and my ideal height in a man would be between 5ft5 and 5ft8. I think men think all women want a tall man whereas in fact, there are plenty of women who don’t!

But that is tall to you 😂

I wouldn't want a giant.. just a tall man.. in relation to me.

Awkwardisfunny · 21/09/2026 22:58

Do you not think biology comes into play? What our species prioritises and why? I feel safer with taller men. I also want to know my man can lift me if needed(!) or reach stuff on high shelves.

DreamyRedNewt · 21/09/2026 23:00

I wouldn't like a man shorter than me, no. I don't need a really tall man, just a bit taller is enough so that I can wear high heels without ending up being taller than him. I am 5'8

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 21/09/2026 23:01

I don’t want to be with a man who’s shorter or thinner than me. It would make me feel very unattractive to be taller and fatter than the man I was dating.

dustabsorber · 21/09/2026 23:03

I always had a thing for Dudley Moore, maybe I am just a bit weird.
